I am looking to buy one of these amps. I currently have a standard stereo system and no surround sound.

Is it worth the extra 100 quid for the DTS ES on the 5200? Is the extra power worth it too?

Also I have read about some sort of on screen display with the SR5200. Is this on a TV? My tv won't accept an svideo or composite signal would this be a problem?

I would appreciate any advice.

It also has a line level 5.1 input, which may be of some use if you plan on buying a DVD-Audio or SACD player in future.

Is it? The Sony's a very good machine, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth now. No PL2 either like the Marantz.

I don't think you can say any amp is definately better than another without a demo on your own speakers anyway.

In your opinion I guess it maybe is but it is also FAR more expensive than a 4200 (unless you managed to get one from the bargain forums)

I've read a lot about the marantz amps recently and not heard ONE bad word about them can't say the same about the 1070 however :(

I will probably get an SR4200 then. As far as I can tell 70w per channel should be enough and I am unlikely to ever use the 6.1 inputs which the 5200 has.

Heres the link for Upgrade Heaven forum members discount thread (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33495)

When your a member of these forums you get a good discount, read the thread opening from Justin. And not forgetting you get the full 2 year warrenty when you purchase Marantz goods from Upgrade, highly recommended (got our dvd player from there)

For £50 more than the 5200 you can get the 6200 which I have heard from a friend is very good.

arb, you like the Sony yes but why come into a thread about Marantz and immediately put them down, not nice really ;)

Thanks for the info.

My budget is quite limited though and the 5200 is already 100 pounds more than the 4200, I can't really afford that as it is.

I know it is not strictly related but I was going to buy some stereo speakers for use with this amp. Either the Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 or Mission M71.

Does anybody recommend either? I was going to get them and later use them as rears when I go full surround.

Many thanks.

The reviews have been very good for the Marantz line of AV recievers. One magasine said that Marantz had seriously underpriced them. Even after that, most online retailers are knocking 50 quid off the RRP.

And I've got the Marantz 5200 for £100 less with all those features (PL2, DTS-ES, DD-EX). Sony amps tend to make music sound overprocessed to me.

Asking if its worth the extra for DTS-ES is really down to if you would use it - i.e your current system, how many discs you have in this format, and so on. The main advantages of the SR5200 are the 5.1 input, bit more power, extra video input, and the onscreen display. As long as your TV has a spare scart, you just run a s-vid or composite to scart from the amp to your TV, and connect the remaining kit to your amp via s-vid/composite and switch everything via the amp.

Hope this helps?

Justin

If you are never going to use the 6.1 inputs, and aren't bothered about 6.1 sound (DTS-ES, DD-EX etc), then the 4200 would seem to fit the bill, especially if you are a bit limited on budget.

If you want a set of small speakers which you can later use as surrounds, then either of the choices you mentioned would be OK.
However, if you are going to wall mount them, then the Missions may be a bit too deep (they are 11" deep).

If you want a pair of decent small speakers, which will later double for use as rears and are relatively inexpensive, consider JPW ML310s at £40 a pair, or Kef Cresta1 at £60, both from Richer Sounds. Either will easily compete in sound quality terms with any other sub £150 compact speakers of similar size.
