There's good customer reviews on amazon but a search on google is just bringing up pages and pages of those stupid price comparison sites.

I've got a couple of £10 vouchers that need spending within a week so I might buy one - I've managed to reserve one so will have more of a look around tonight to see if I can find anything more about it. The higher-end Philips dvd players seem to have a good rap though.

bingsy i cant thank you enough!

got a portable dvd from currys last week for £70 and was returning it today due to fault. Decided to go for this model and asked if they would price match the argos one. Had no problems price matching and even gave me 10% on the difference :)

now the best bit ... just got home and realised they gave me the wrong model PET720 which is £130 instore :)

superb portable with upto 4 hours battery life

thanks m8

all in all i got the £130 one for £62.50 and well chuffed

You're welcome bigcheeseburger. Lucky you for getting a better model. Wonder what the chances are of Currys letting me have a PET720. If I tell them it's £66.66 in Argos will they buy-it or rather let me buy it for that price.

i'm just wondering how i got it

see the lady called argos to confirm the following:

1. the model number
2. the price i quoted
3. they had stock

now i can recall hearing her saying "can you confirm it's the 706" then i paid and she shouted a young lad to go get me a "720"

so clearly she got it wrong, /me thinks cause i was chatting her up ;)

receipt says 706 :s

Is that the code for the 720? I've been thinking of getting a 720 since The Gadget Show roadtested loads and said that was the best...but I do have quite a few R1 dvds. My dad has one - the screen is far more watchable than I expected at that size... Ooer, I can feel my wallet itching. :brickwall

Nice one! I think that's what I found elsewhere (or rather Google did). I'm now wrestling with my conscience and wallet...

Quite often if the manufacturer runs out of stock of a particular model, they supply argos with a better model under the cat number of the lower model. This is why they often say at the til that you may receive a substitute of the same or higher spec. Happens all the time with their low end DVD players. I remember we used to have 3 different DVD players under the same cat number, so if we got a customer we liked we send one of the better ones down!

Spot on. I remember one cat number of a cheap DVD player and we'd get in about 4 different models from different manufacturers.

bought this today & so far impressed. Was previously looking at getting the twin screen set, but for this price I'm now considering buying two for that price - no arguments then about what films to watch
Cheers

Me too. MR hack works perfectly. It was gonna be a pressie for the kids for later in the year, but I've got two long-haul work trips coming up, so I'm having it now! :D

Cheers

Yes it has built in speakers and it does have AV input as mentioned earlier.

I hope this helps..

Very tempted by this, but the 2 hour battery life is a concern as I will be using it mainly on plane journeys.

Can anyone who has one comment on whether the two hours is realistic, or if it is more like laptop battery life (4 hours quoted, 90 minutes in actual use).

Two hours isn't even long enough to watch some longer films, but for the price, it would be usable as long as I can get a spare battery.

I think the majority of portable dvd players only have a playing time of 2-2.5 hours from their batteries. You can get spare batteries at the site below. £20 plus delivery:

http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/ServiceCareSite/ServiceCare/PortableDVD/page/2

Can someone who's bought a PET706 please tell us the battery model number.

I guess it's probably been posted before but for anyone unfamiliar with this site, they sell refurb' Philips stuff.

I picked one up and returned it after noticing the 2 hour battery life thing (which I hadn't before). It says "up to" 2 hours, which doesn't bode well. If you did get given a 720 instead, that'd be much better as that's quoted as 4 hours.

The battery model number on the PET706 is AY4389 (Li-ion 7.4V 2200mAh)

A quick look around and I found a site wanting £77.00 for a spare battery

From the website

The playing time of the player with fully charged battery is about 2.5 hours when TFT on and about 4 hours when TFT off.

Anybody found anywhere else for a spare battery?

First off - Thanks to the OP!
Picked this up on Weds and its a really good little unit.

Does anyone that owns one know how to bookmark a point in a film on this player as it is constantly loading from scratch everytime I switch it on?

Maybe this feature is not available but I did get used to this on my last portable player.
