Was bidding on an item from this guy on ebay:-

Link to eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=582776&mpre=http%3A//search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZmiksy24QQhtZ-1)

The day the auction was finishing another bid comes in from reg8261 with zero feedback so I do abit of investigating. Turns out he's only bidding on items from the above seller and nothing else. He's done it at least 6 times now. Have contacted ebay twice about it and have heard nothing back yet so have taken to contacting people who are bidding on his items to warn them

Would appreciate some help getting them banned ;)

Ebay wrote back to me saying that it's up to them whether they take action and it's confidential. miksy24 is still selling. Have just noticed that now a guy called superstriker154 is now shill bidding on miksy24's account, it's so obvious and yet they won't do anything about it. Would appreciate some help to report this seller "miksy24" as having 2 shill bidders for him, reg8261 and superstriker154, this is really bugging me now!!!

why bugging you? with ebay you put in what you are happy to pay and then leave it. if you have to pay that (through shill bidding), then you were happy to pay that and if it goes over your price, then so be it.

never let it bother me, even if i spotted it happening (the world of kids books is not really a shillers place)

Unfortunately, the odds are that ebay won't do anything about it - shill bidding pushes the price up and so that get a bigger final value fee. Then, if you pay by paypal, they get more money there, too.

Always thought the best way to find out someones maximum bid (if you were shill bidding on your own stuff) would be to bid a quid more but also stick an extra 0 on the end (ie £960 rather than £96). You then get to see what their maximum bid is and just shill-bid up to that!

Eh? How does that work? Surely you'd just end up winning your own auction?

Was about to ask the same question! I'm not going mad then!

That's a crap attitude to have. I usually put in a fairly high max bid for items because I know that on average I'll win an item for about 75% of that maximum.

Should have explained better - you then have a good reason to retract your shill bid, since you put an extra zero in by mistake. Once it has been retracted, you can shill bid up to whatever their maximum was.

I see - very crafty :)

The item that was being bid on by myself was for a charity which is why it's got my back up so much.

Funnily enough the seller has so far sold about 3 items to his shill bidding buddies which means that the next day the items are going straight back up again, possibly costing him extra fees if it keeps happening. He seems to be abit greedy to get the balance right.

Best combat against shill bidding is to snipe

I do not subscribe to the 'who cares' attitude when it comes to shill bidding though

many powersellers continue to operate despite being reported multiple time for shill bidding because they bring in more revenue to ebay than a small time private seller offloading a couple of items per year.

That might be partly due to me emailing the other bidders and telling them what he was up to

It's irritating but sometimes it's good for a friend to put your item up to £40 at the start if you want at least £40 for it, so then more interest comes in through people bidding and they get more excited but you don't have to pay eBay extra for a reserve fee.

But bidding after other people have bidded is a bit yucky.
