Man, this sounds FANTASTIC. :D Love it.
Edit: See Danger Mouse's post below for the video to hear it.
So far as I can tell this is a legit way to hear it: you can only stream and they have a thing in their 'about' section with links to the iTunes store? Apologies if it's against the forum rules.
Anyway, great song. Just use the flash player to preview it.

My tickets for the Ritz gig arroved yesterday. Ace.
Unfortunatly the hype machine is against T and C's as it's a site that collects all the mp3's from blogs daily, linking to them where you can download the track.

How silly: I assumed they had removed download links. Strange they get away with it. Guess I'll edit the post: people can listen from the video.
It's on their myspace site as well if the video's a BW drain. :)
Sounds like 3 or 4 different songs this, I really like it.

Really looking forward to giving the new album a listen. Been listing to 'A Certain Trigger' again recently so this is perfect timing!

I've been introducing them to everyone I see over here, they seem to eb going down pretty well! :)

Just seen this on the official site too:
Maximo Park are featured extensively on this week's Culture Show this Saturday (3rd March) at 7.15pm.
The programme will include a fascinating documentary filmed last year during the recording of Our Earthly Pleasures, as well as a studio interview and acoustic performance of Books From Boxes, taken from the forthcoming album.
Definitely not to be missed!
The Culture Show airs at 7.15pm on BBC 2.
Also, an extract from an interview with Drowned In Sound:
DiS: Something that’s really apparent after just a couple of listens to Our Earthly Pleasures is that almost all of the songs could be plucked and used as a single. There’s a real consistency of quality throughout…
Paul: It’s an interesting thing, because it is quite arbitrary: you could pick any of the songs and they all have an element of ‘the new’ to them. I look down the tracks and wonder why certain songs like ‘Our Velocity’ stood out in the first place.

Looking forward to it even more now, if that's at all possible!

Brilliant. They wee all over their alleged peers from a great height. I knew this lot would bloom.

They have a new podcast up on their website which will show interviews and bits of unrecorded music.
The first is Paul Smith talking over the Our Velocity video about the song.
Got that Podcast - pretty good.
Anyway, have been listening to the new album today on the iPod, well impressed on first listen. Wasn't a huge fan of the last album although the singles were great. Top stuff this one.

1/5 of the band I believe.
kinda like it on first listen - love the way they don't seem to structure their songs conventionally and they don't hang around either.
Bit samey, but not in the bad Bloc Party way - repeated listens will actually reward rather than annoy, in this case.
This might be one of the rare albums I acquire early as I'll be in the US when it comes out so I'd like to have it to listen to on the plane.
My initial impression, after two listens, is that it's rather "meh" and forgettable. I liked A Certain Trigger a lot though, and maybe it needs some time to sink in.
The Bear

A little underwhelmed on one or two of the tracks which seem slightly formulaic for such a usually unstructured and musically dynamic band.
There are a lot of very good tracks though and I'm sure they'll all grow on me with a few more listens.

06-03-2007, 14:57
I'm enjoying this so far - Tracks 3 and 8 are standouts for me - the rest can sometimes sound a little samey - but they're still inventive enough to differentiate themselves from other dull bands of the moment that it's a pretty welcome album...
I haven't heard Our Earthly Pleasures, but going on some of the verdicts I've seen on it, as well as my own verdict of A Certain Trigger, I think Maximo Park are very much a 'singles band' for now. At least as far as I'm concerned. Some great tracks and some right old crud.

Well I like it a lot I have to say - not going to set the world alight, but as innovative as these sort of bands get, which is saying a lot.
Still think it sounds like the Proclaimer brothers fronting XTC but that's no bad a thing.

I'm absolutely loving this album now. Has immense replay and grower capabilities. The songs really benefit from repeated listenings as you become more familiar with them and then before you know it they're in your head and really stick with you.
Originally I thought too many songs didn't sound like Maximo Park but they do imprint their sound in not so obvious ways. Not as raw sounding or immediate as A Certain Trigger but it has it's own unique charm as is usual for this band.
I can easily see 5 or more singles off this too.
Oh and does anyone think 'By The Monument' (especially the verses) sounds like a Morrissey song?!!

Arcade Fire are not a guitar band....and.....I didn't like it :D
Good beard-work though.
I'm not pretending that MP are anything innovative (me hankering after a ticket was as much to do with Art Brut as anything) but it's a great record for 2 reasons:
1) Songs with more hooks than a New Order lookalike convention
2) A singer who sings in a regional dialect - that is always a winner.
In fairness we all have different tastes, and I often find myself thinking 'what the ****?' after checking out records you like, but I tend to keep quiet about it - synthesisers don't give me a hard-on just for being there...well maybe when I was 13 :D

Synthesisers obviously give MP a hard on then because they have one all over the new single. ;)
What kind of band are Arcade Fire, if not a guitar one? Okay, they employ more than 'just' guitars, but they're still pretty much a guitar band. (And the record has loads of hooks too.)

I don't mean to offend you JV, but you always strike me as the sort who has a preference for the 'fashion' of music, which is fair enough.

Thou Shalt not stop liking a band just because they become popular. ;)
I always thought MP were actually quite fashionable?
I heard this a few days ago, and also don't quite get the fuss about them. Admittedly I hate the libertines and their spin offs, kaiser chiefs and razorlight, find bloc party/the rakes and the fratellis pretty average, so perhaps it's not really my genre. It's just standard listenable indie rock, which has to be done so well now to make it interesting and I just don't think they pull it off. Unlike IMO the guillemots, raconteurs, the strokes who are all bands in that genre I like
Johnny Vodka

If I get something in I'm not that fussed about, I'll usually see if anyone else fancies doing it. Gives the record a chance of a good review & it means I save time. Pretty standard practice, I think. Anyway, as I said in my first post in this thread, it could be I just miss the point of Maximo Park...

They fall into exactly that genre you mention, but this record is how to do it properly rather than the dull antics of the other acts you discussed.
It's also worth noting that it takes a good few listens to appreciate.

You think so? I actually like the Inspirals and Pulp. The Inspirals had a defining sound with the keyboards, Pulp (at the best part of their career: His 'n' Hers for me) had that cheap sound, a sleazy feel and Jarvis' vocals... Maximo Park don't seem to have anything like that.
Even now the likes of Maximo Park and the Kaiser Chiefs have cited us as being influences on their career, which I have to say fills me with pride.

I quite like the Rakes new album, and all those bands have their own merits and bad points.
I can honestly say that Maximo Park are my favourite band since the Smiths. I like every single song that they've done, even the 'Missing Songs' b-sides and this album doesn't disappoint in that regard either. Every song's a winner.

Okay, so I've finally heard this album all the way through for the first time today and I've got to say that I'm loving it. I mean, I was hoping it would be good after I heard My Velocity, but it's managed to live up to my expectations of the band after A Certain Trigger (an album which I still regularly listen to).
I've been through the album three times now and there's not a bit of it I think is significantly weaker than the rest - in terms of replay value, that's a really good thing.

I'm REALLY REALLY liking this - as has been said earlier, there's not really a poor track on the album, and the whole thing sounds more rounded than "A Certain Trigger", and that was a great album!
Think my favourite is "Books From Boxes", but it was a close thing
The last 35 seconds for some reason i'm really liking, is that Paul's vocals?. I thought Books From Boxes was my favourite, now it's
1- Our Velocity
2- Parisian Skies

I disagree. It's okay, but it really does sound like a "difficult 2nd album" where they're not sure what to do and some up with a dozen quite similar sounding songs as they've ran out of ideas.
It's not a bad album, but it's not up to the standard of their debut. Doesn't stop Our Velocity from being a great song though...

I too thought they were very similar songs at first, but this really is a record that rewards you on repeat listens. Even Paul Smith said they tried to make a record that got better with more listens - and they succeeded.
Stuff like Parisian Skies, Fortnight's Time and Nosebleed were instantly forgettable when I first listened to it but they are firm favourites of mine now.

I think they're quite possibly the best current British indie offering when you consider the full package, great on record, fantastic live and incredibly humble with it

If there's one song I can't get out of my head at the moment it's 'By The Monument' which is currently my favourite of the tracks I hadn't heard before listening to the album as a whole.
I've read between the lines on the latest email
Seems plausible :)
In context, this was relating to people being unable to get tickets to ticket for upcoming gigs:
Before that, we are off on a European jaunt that encompasses a number of countries. Its great that all the shows sold out so quickly, but we're aware that loads of people couldn't get tickets so we will be putting on more shows towards the end of the year. We still have a few tricks up our collective sleeve, including festival appearances and our wily management team will work with Warp to find ways of offering free tickets.
There may be a big winter gift coming your way...
We'll keep you posted.

I've just got the Album (Earthly Pleasures) after getting hooked on 'Our Velocity' since hearing it radio/tv.
Its a cracking album, and one of the few I can listen to right through without skipping tracks.
Good to see fellow Geordies knocking out some decent tunes! :notworthy

Strange accent they sing in though.
Most people who aren't from the NE would class the lead singer as having a geordie accent. Next you'll be telling us the Futureheads aren't Mackems. ;)

Well I saw these Wed night at Nottingham and they were fantastic! So full of energy, so tight, and the crowd were well up for it - At the end of Apply Some Pressure the applause lasted a full minute and a half ending in chants of 'Maximo, Maximo' before Paul Smith had to cut in!! Superb.
Art Brut were decent. Not really into them, but the lead singer is quite an amusing fella, even if he did take to stage in his socks with a big spud in them!!

Has anyone heard the Maximo Park song called 'Wasteland'?
It's on the 2005 Help! A Day In The Life charity album and I heard it for the first time yesterday. Blinding song! Really upbeat and sounds like it should be on one of the albums. It's my new favourite song at the minute.

Thank you for everyone who has jumped, screamed and waved along with our music this week. And although we try not to show favouritism Nottingham Rock City will have to go down as one of the most passionate crowds we've ever played for.

If anyone is interested, I've got a spare ticket for Maximo Park for tomorrow night at Astoria (Thursday). One of my mates has dropped out so we're trying to shift it before had to save standing outside. I just want £19 for it - basically face value plus booking fees. My mate has put it on Gumtree but I thought I'd mention it on here in case anyone wants it.
You'll have to let me know as soon as possible, and you'll have to meet me outside at around 6.45.
Sorry if I wasn't supposed to mention this on here, but I'm not trying to make money, just cover the cost of the ticket! Cheers!
Edit: S'ok, found someone on Gumtree ;)

Brilliant gig last night. The roof nearly came off when they played 'Apply Some Pressure' and 'Our Velocity.' I don't know where they get their energy from... :)
The Long Blondes were OK and Wild Beasts were interesting too.
Got a 'Ignorance Isn't Bliss' tee, lovely. :)

You think? I thought they were great and can’t see how that comment is valid for anyone but Kate (singer) and she is always like that.

Haha good spot, it was their biggest gig so far but they have been asked to support Maximo again and the Kaiser Chiefs have requested their addition to the Wireless festival bill.

I can kind of understand the no surprises thing - the setlist is pretty familiar now, perhaps they could mix it up with a couple of covers or something? That was my only negative comment after the Manchester gig, which I otherwise really enjoyed.

I think they could mix it up with some B-Sides off Missing Songs, but then again they've just released a new album and that's what they are touring to promote. They included plenty from the first album as well, and I went away a happy bunny.
