I got all excited and was close to ordering but the available HD-DVD's look a bit poor. Gonna hold back...

Although the US HD-DVD available titles looks better. This add on is region free?

They are, and cheaper. However releases are drying up and so are sales. There are serious doubts about the future

This add on is region free?

It is for now. There are indications that region coding will be bought in sometime before the summer although understandably they've been pretty quiet about that!

Take this article with a massive pinch of salt - in the 2 weeks that the data is based on, there were NO HD-DVD new releases compared to 2 Blu-Ray ones - very dodgy data.

And the survey about "Who's been watching Blu-Ray movies on their PS3" - well, it came with a free one so who wouldn't watch it? (although Talladega Nights was rubbish).

Also - HD DVD - MICROSOFT. I wouldn't write them off just yet - apparently they're pretty good a making money......

From the same article:

As things stood at the beginning of January Microsoft had sold just shy of 100,000 HD-DVD peripherals for the 360. That compared to 687,300 PS3s sold. As SPOnG pointed out then, however, that was nearly 100,000 gamers who specifically wanted to watch HD-DVD. That's compared to 687,300 gamers who wanted a games machine, but weren't necessarily concerned about DVD functionality.

But that's an instant installed userbase of 687,300 compared to less than a sixth for HD-DVD. The PS3 is a trojan horse for Blu-Ray, which I think will win out in the end.

But maybe this isn't the place where I should have started this discussion, apologies all.

Not really as simple as that though.
As pointed out in the article, those who've bought an HDDVD drive have done so to watch films, and likely buy numerous discs over time. PS3 users aren't all interested in the bluray movie aspect.

Plus, a lot of people have wanted HDDVD drive addons for the 360 but have been unable to get one yet due to stock. 12 months from now it'll be clearer, and by then the £130 I just spent on the drive won't trouble me if it fails. I'll have enjoyed 12 months of HD films by then, and won't have bought a PS3 yet

This is the best point which I think most Blu-Ray supporters are missing - worst case senario, in 12 months HD-DVD Fails and I'm stuck with a very cool piece of HD Kit which matches my 360 (and only cost £130), and a load of HD DVDs (£12 each) I can still use. And I could then buy a PS3 for less than it'll cost at launch.

Whilst I'm not made of money - £130 for a gadget like this is a total bargain - Fine, wait a year to see who wins (if anyone) but for me, £130 for a year worth of HD finery is more than worth the risk of backing the wrong horse.

I see it as a win-win....

Isn't it worth waiting just a little longer for the next version of the 360? As I understand, that will have HD-DVD built in and will be a lot quieter too. The noise it makes at the moment is what's puting me off buying an add-on to watch movies on it. It's like having a hair dryer blowing in the background. Oo-er.

Tony Ferrino
06-02-2007, 17:02
Completely agree with the two posts (but one) above. Even if blu-ray wins out, I won't feel like I've wasted my money on the add-on at all. It's paid for itself in enjoyment already as far as I'm concerned.

I bought mine the week before xmas -

Playing game = little noisey (slightly more than my PS2)

Playing DVD = Slight background hum (less than my PS2)

Playing HD DVD = Practically silent - certainly can't hear it over the noise my Sky Box Hard Drive makes).

The thing about waiting is - why not wait for the Xbox720?

I learned my lesson after my Girlf said she'd get me a 360 for Xmas 2005 - I said no, I'd wait and get a PS3 for my Birthday in the May 2006 - look how that turned out.....!!!!

the 360 will not have a hddvd drive as standard, it can't read the game disks. not gonna happen.

it should hopefully be quieter with less fan use required to cool the 65nm chips and if they get a quieter dvde drive (which is what makes most of the racket and which is dormant when the silent hddvd drive is in use)

All 360s manufactured from November 2006 are produced with a Philips DVD drive which is much quieter, and they are now filtering through into stock. However, you can't tell from the box or code which is which so there is still some pot luck involved.

Is there any way I can get my noisey Xbox360 to quieten down a bit? It's extremely distracting. Are those add on fans any use? Playing a game like Ridge Racer 6 soounds as if I'm really in a car with all the engine noises (sounds ideal coz of the realism, but when you know for a fact that it's just the noisey xbox, it has the opposite effect). :(

Its the DVD drive which generates most of the noise rather than the fans

I don't know whether it's just mine but the intercooler add on fan I bought is extremely noisy when I turn the 360 on (it will drown out a tv on medium voulme) and then settles down after a couple of minutes. Once settled, having extra fans is still noiser than just the original 360 on its own.. I just drown it out by cranking up the amp

According to this (http://www.**********.com/xbox1data/sep/EEZpZFFZZETHwPQATj.php) the newer 360's will have quiet drives. So wait for them to start popping up on Ebay soon.....

Thanks for all the info on the Xbox360 Hd DVD bundles everyone.

My friends and I are all going for the HD DVD format over bluray, purely because we like a lot of Universal Pictures movies (The "Bourne Identity" movies, Shaun of the Dead, Jurassic Park, ET etc..) and they're all obviously exclusive to HD DVD.

Take a look:- http://www.dvdtown.com/news/universalbehindhddvdwith100titles/4294

Wern't Philips a BIG hand in making both the VHS and CD formats, where Sony were more into Betamax and Minidisc?

Wern't Philips a BIG hand in making both the VHS and CD formats, where Sony were more into Betamax and Minidisc?

Off topic.. AIUI Betamax was solely Sony and VHS was solely JVC (Victor) who then licensed it to other companies. Phillips and Sony were jointly involved in CD and CD-Rom and MMCD.

MMCD merged with SDD to become DVD. The interesting thing was dual-layers were unique to MMCD so we'd have been stuck with single-layers if it weren't for them. Since MMCD only had the backing of Phillips/Sony it was probably a wise move not to go it alone. It's a shame Toshiba haven't been as wise but given the money they made from DVD I can see why they're not willing to let go.

Sony were (and still are) solely involved in Minidisc
