View Full Version : Grave Of The Fireflies
can anyone tell me what this animated film is like ?
i've read some reviews and it looks like a pretty powerful film without being over melodramatic or too sentimental (which i think works best)
Also, anyone know where i can get the American R0 of this for the best price ?
I'm aware that there's the much better Japanese R2 (better pic, sound etc) but i really cant afford to pay those prices and would love to the film now.
Also, Princess Mononoke is BLOODY BRILLIANT!
Saw it for the first time last night and was blown away - STUDIO GHILBI kick ass!!
Grave OF The Fireflies is a very good film, although whether it is too melodramatic or sentimental is debatable. There is no question though that it is moving and very bleak. To me, it reminded me of Schindler's List, not in subject matter, but in tone and in the unflinching way it recounts events. Like the same film, it runs a risk of being sentimental in the manner in which it presents this material. It is certainly worth seeing though - a remarkable film, not just a remarkable anime.
Its not dissimilar to a japanese version of 'When the wind blows'. IMHO, it can be quite depressing, but is a good demonstration of the power of animation.
I like it, my other third hates it.
The CPM release suffers a little from rainbow arfefacts in the black lines. Have a look at dvdpricesearch (http://www.dvdpricesearch.com/cgi-bin/dvdhtml2) for prices and imdb (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0095327) for reviews.
I'd say it's well worth buying. The film is complex and powerful with a horrific inevatability added to it by what happens at the start. Some may say that the section set to music near the end is slightly too much, but to be honest you'll most likely be moved to tears before this point anyway. Interesting to note that this was originally shown in a double bill with Totoro!!!!
Yep, definitely worth buying.
DVDBO and ABSound seem to have the r0 cheapest at around £16.

Well, at that price Mr Woo (if indeed that is his real name;)), may be better off buying from Japan as the Japanese release is only 2980 yen which equates (on current exchange rates) to a mere £15.60.
Here it is at Amazon Japan (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005HRU5/qid=1010698838/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_0_1/250-3301544-5470655) .
