A while ago a friend of mine was telling me about how she'd read about some new SD and CF cards that had wifi built into them, the idea being that you did not have to remove your memory card from the camera, just bring it close to your laptop and you could copy the files over the air....

Did anything actually happen with this idea? I've been looking around the internet but all I can find is Wifi Cards in CF or SD devices for PDA's and the like..

As you have I've only ever seen cards that are a Wi-Fi card in CF or SD form never a memory card that is also Wi-Fi. I have a CF card for an old PDA and with the antenna it wouldn't fit a camera anyhow. I think cameras with built in WIFI will be the way to go as even if you could fit one in your camera you would need a camera that supported the card and enabled you to configure it for IP address, security...

They were mainly for PDAs which didn't include WiFi built in, and have largely been sidelined as most do now. I've never seen one that works with cameras, although it is probably possible but seems very difficult to implement.

Some cameras do have WiFi built in though, like a few Nikons, both compact and DSLRs.

I was taking the idea that the wifi chipset these days costs very little to make it whould not be hard to add it in..

I'm surprised that more cameras are not Wifi enabled it seems eveything else is these days.

WiFi is a big power sap, and most point and shoots are used away from your computer so I can't see a huge market for it?
