OK - so my PS2 has recently come out of retirement (after 2-3 years in the wilderness) due to discovering Guitar Hero and Canis Canem Edit.
I loved Final Fantasy VII on the original PS and wondered after all this time if there are any other gems like that that on the PS2 that I may have missed and are worth picking up...
Final Fantasy XII is the one to go for. UK version out soon.
i quite enjoyed that Kingdom Hearts game
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Final Fantasy X
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant
Atelier Iris
Xenosaga
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Wild ARMs 3
Suikoden V
All are well worth playing.

I think that from what i've read, FF XII has to be a definite.
Aretak - thanks for the list. Would you recommend any of those more than others?
Now to see how many of them I can get for a ridiculously cheap price... :D
Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King (favourite game of 2006)
Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2)
I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy XII and Rogue Galaxy
If you are looking for something a bit more action/adventure based with RPG-lite elements, check out Drakan: The Ancients' Gates.
Aretak - thanks for the list. Would you recommend any of those more than others?Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Final Fantasy X are the ones I'd recommend seeking out first... two absoloutely amazing games right there.
I'd also strongly recommend Final Fantasy VIII and IX as well if you haven't played them. I'm playing through IX again on my PSP at the moment, and I'd forgotten just how fantastic it is.
I finished Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits a while ago, and that was quite fun. If you leave out two of the 'secret' things, you can do it very fast imo.
Other than the FF series, I have a real soft spot for Summoner 1 and 2 - both were very fun, and I believe won lots of best rpg awards at time of release?
Finally, if you want a break from fantasy rpg, give GTA: San Andreas a go. The story is very immersive, and to be honest it sometimes feels very open in its freedom.

If you're a fan of the FF series then FFX should be quite cheap pre-owned. I also loved both Kingdom Hearts games (first one better) and DQVIII.

Don't forget the Nippon Ichi games; especially Disgaea. (and Disgaea 2)
They do eat time at a frightening rate though.
I'd pick up Final Fantasy X for now, then FF XII when it comes out.
I've also got Star Ocean and Dragon Quest, but I don't seem to be able to get into them as much as I can with the Final Fantasy series.
