View Full Version : Recommend a poker site (that isn't PokerStars)

I've been playing on Pokerstars for a fair while not, and whilst I love the UI and am really used to playing on there, it does have it's disadvantages (silly high deposit amount for a start).
Either way, a friend I play with has started working for a large finance company and his contract states he can't play on PokerStars, as well as a few other sites that I can't remember right now.
So are there any other sites that people recommend? We tried VCPoker but it turned out to be absolute rubbish. The UI was pretty poor, but this could have been just because I was used to PS, but the buddy system didn't work at all. We were all logged ontogether yet it would state we were all offline and we simply couldn't organise to get into a game together (we usually join a sit + go).
So... any other recommendations? I'd prefer to not have to deposit a lot in one go, UK based helps and a GUI which isn't overwhelming as we'll have a new guy joining us.
The Prima network? Bet365 etc all use "skins" to play on the one network, meaning there is always a good range of games (although why they moved the late nate Omaha tourney to 2.15am UK time I'll never know!).
Ladbrokes used to be quite good, though haven't been on there for a while, same with UltimateBet - although their UI is quite different to the others, bit of a bovril thing there!
One question though: why would your mates work contract say that? Unless he works for someone like PWC that certify the sites are random and fair of course......

I use bet365. Simple and fast ui. Not sure what you mean about a buddy system, but you can find other users by typing their name into the search engine.

mickyg - I think it comes under the conditions of being counted as an employee of the poker company. Either way, them's the rules (it's a major financing firm).
By the buddy system I meant you could add friends and it would tell you wht table they were at + let you join them. Except it didn't. On VCPoker it showed all of us as offline when we were all at tables, it made joining each other at tables unbelievably difficult.

I gave Bet365 poker a go last night and was suprised to find about $5 in my account, so I think I've played it before; although I don't have any recollection of this.
It seemed pretty good, I liked the clean interface but the game seemed to be moving a bit too quickly. Perhaps I was on a turbo table, or are they all like that? I know people probably get hacked off with slow players, but I prefered the more relaxed play of PokerStars.
Well, after disliking pokerstars I now only play there as it is by far the best site on the web; given I've played at 30+ sites over 5 years, I'd like to think I have a good idea. Their rewards programme is incredible: in the last 4 months I've got a lurvely wool/leather jacket, an 8 gb ipod nano, and a $3k st sng with Joe Hachem next month:D And a $7k profit since I played there exclusively 4 months ago.
As for a UK based company, Ladbrokes would be my choice.

Ruddy hell you must play a lot :)
I really like Pokerstars. The software is excellent and I've had really good games on there, but the annoyances with cash transactions are really off-putting for the casual player. Don't you need to have at least $50 in your account to be able to withdraw too?
Good to see you're still doing well with the poker nc

It's not too much. If you played 3x 1/2nl tables for 2 hours a day, you'd have at least 5000 fpp's in a month - and remember they get doubled once you reach 4000.

Great to hear from you mate:D Are you still playing (and sports betting - if you are I need some superbowl tips!)?

If money is a prob, I'd stick to the freerolls and hopefully you'll build a bank balance - that's how I started.
Hows your stats nc? You use poker tracker? I often wondered if there is any serious players on these forums.

What the hell does the Republic of Ireland have to do with this? ;)

You should use pokertracker for tracking your cash. Works on stt's also. Best $50 you'll ever spend. I was doing a mission of turning $100 into $20,000 this year. Started on the 8th of Jan at the 5c/10c and got it up to $2,300 last week on the 25/50c tabs. Then went on life tilt and dropped it down to $1600 and cashed out about 2 hours ago. No more cash or online poker for me.
