Depends what you're using them for and your budget. Recent favourite are Sennheiser 580s which were once £200 but can be got for £60-£80 over the last few months

Cheaper still, Beyer Dynamic 231s for about £35-£40 as recommended by What Hi-Fi. I've got a pair of these for my portable player and they're great.

Their for occasional use so I can watch films, listen to music late at night without disturbing the rest of my household. I would like a good quality pair 'audiophile' as they say but I don't want to pay a lot. Sennheiser I understand are a good make, where are they available at that price?

I've noticed in the bargain forum someones posted some Sennheiser 495's, Maplins are doing them for £35. How do these compare to the 580, is it worth spending the extra? Is there an appreciable difference in the sound?

I think it was empiredirect.co.uk

Not sure if they still have them as I think Sennheiser have discontinued them. ED do the 495s for £29.99 but I've not heard them so I can't really comment.

I can recommend the Beyers £31.98 but I've not heard the newer "Galactic" version of these.

Do you have a local Hi-Fi shop?

Oh good taste

I run a pair of 580's for serious listening and they are superb - Richers and many others are asking for these at £60, as Nigel says, and if this is within budget, then give them a listen.

I also have a pair of DT231's, as does Nigel, and they are blinding with a PC or portable (as I use them for).

I wasn't that keen on the 495's myself, and wouldn't hesitate in getting the 580's instead - but you need to listen yourself....

Having said that, the 580's are getting thin on the ground now

:(

I was after a pair of S580's but couldn't find them anywhere. I opted for S570's instead which I find are OK. I tried the 495's but thought they sounded a bit lighter than the 570's which had a bit more bass. I paid £75 quid for the 570's and use them with my hifi.

It is agood idea to try some out

Beyer DT 100's are the dogs danglies. Mine cost £150 about 10 years ago. Yes they do still make them, they are the white/grey ones you see in recording studio's. By the way, mine still perform wonderfully after all this time.

Thanks everyone there's plenty to think about there. My budgets £90 max. I'm going to try some hifi shops at the weekend but wanted to get some ideas from here.

I know absolutely nothing about h/p so wanted to be armed with some knowledge before going to audition a pair. It's nice to know that the same brands keep being mentioned so at least I won't have to try dozens and dozens.

See if you can find a pair of sennheiser HD 25sps, the perennial djs favourite, they are extremely light and comfortable and i believe, have better frequency response than the 570/80, 495s listed above[could be wrong....]. Try them out of course, as well as the rest, but at about £80 are excellent value. should be available in any Dj type shop and hifi shops nationwide.

Cheers, Brock.

Cornelius, if your budget is £90 then why not just add another tenner and get the Sennheiser HD600s from Richer Sounds. You will never need to buy another pair of headphones ever again.

Well after trying out 8 different pairs of headphones today and yesterday I finally opted for a pair of Sennheiser HD580 a snip at £60.

Mozza thanks about the tip re HD600's I gave them a go and although I thought they sounded better than the 580's I decided to stick with the 580's which sound absolutely great. They 're light and comfortable to wear, I've been listening to them all evening and the sound has improved quite a bit over the 6 hours as I've worn them in. I really happy with them.

Thanks to everyone and for all your advice.

Cornelius, could you please tell where you got your HD580's for £60?

Also can anyone tell me what the difference is between the HD580 and the HD590? Has the 590 superceded the 580?

Cheers :) .
