So that "Crowded House - Farewell To The World" concert DVD I saw in HMV last week was a big con then?

Sigh!

it's a bit weird them talking about reforming while at the same time pointing out how crucial Hester was to the band's sound. I guess the solo career hasn't really been half as successful as he would have liked it to be (it's barely been a roaring success, has it?) so it's back to what he's best at... I'd love to see him play Together Alone live with full Maori choir but what are the odds that will happen?

I am very excited indeed. They could charge £100 a ticket and I'd still go. It's always been a huge regret that I never saw the Crowdies live, although I did see the three of them play together at the Albert Hall after Paul's death.

Neil Finn was talking about this in an interview recently so I'm not surprised... (think it was the Word).

good news though.

was only thinking the other day how much Sean Lennon's album sounded like Crowded House too.

It was indeed in The Word. Sounded likely then but nice to have it confirmed.

Commercially, you're right. But Neil Finn's put out two excellent solo albums and his collaboratuion with brother Tim a few years ago produced another stunning album.

Roll on March/April for the new album.

Things get more interesting. Just been reading a statement from Peter Green (long-time official Split Enz/Neil Finn/Crowded House associate/Website guy) on the Frenz.Com forum and he confirms that (1) The new album is a Crowded House album (not Neil Finn Solo) and that (2) Mark Hart is involved with the band.

They played at least three nights sold out the Albert Hall as the Finn Brothers a couple of years ago. Not bad for "not a roaring success" :)

The no-PA version of "Better Be Home Soon" they did is one of my favourite live moments bar none.

I suspect Neil Finn is delighted with how well he's done since CH. Two dozen theatres properly sold out in the UK on two solo and one Finn Bros tours since 1998, similar in Aus/NZ (of course) and enough US support to keep touring over there. Add to that managing to keep a major record deal and the freedom to record and play live whenever he fancies and he's doing alright. His core fanbase have stuck with him, partly, I'm guessing, because as a live perfromer you always get your money's worth and then some.

Re: the reformation, I respect his reasons but personally I could live without it. I've seen Crowded House and I've seen Neil Finn every time he's toured here; I think he does a good enough job of re-inventing that particular repertoire in whatever guise he's touring in at that time. Yes, Nick Seymour, great, but without Hester it's not that much more than a re-labelling exercise. TBH I was looking forward to seeing Neil back at Manchester Apollo with all the diehard good-natured camararderie his shows there always bring. I don't really want to swap that for a night at the Arena and pay £50 for the pleasure.

Such a killjoy. :D

I'm sure Frank Black could so the same but he'll still have the nagging thought at the back of his mind if they're here because his latest solo album was good or rather because he was the powerhouse behind the Pixies. Not sure it's a fair comparison either since FB never until recently played Pixies tunes live.

Anyways, not wanting to micturate on the procession... I do actually own his solo stuff but it just didn't seem to catch the popular wave that his CH stuff did (unless my memory of CH's popularity is somewhat distorted by time and a failing memory?) hence why I was thinking that his resurrection of CH with one key member sadly departed was a bit unusual if his solo career was faring well. Beyond the cachet of the CH name, I'm not sure how it's going to be any different from a Finn solo album with Seymour playing the bass on it.

I will be buying the record and seeing them tour regardless of the reasons behind the reformation - I'd never pass a chance of listening to Finn's songmithery which is possibly one of the most impressive in the mainstream.

Bit confused over this album business now. On the Frenz forum they've been gagging over the prospect of the forthcoming Neil album, due in March, for weeks now. Suddenly there's a CH album instead. Call it what you want, I'm thinking. It's just the same thing with a shinier label. And bright shiny suits when they play live.

The romantic in me is glad, but can't help feeling this is a lightning in a bottle problem.

Although if it's a chance to hear Fall At Your Feet live, I could be convinced...

For me, though, as someone who came late to the party, it's a chance to hear all those great Crowded House tunes live. And I don't care what name they play them under - it's been electric hearing them, whether it was under the Finn Brothers label, Neil solo, whatever.

Latest updates from the Frenz site:-

The new Crowded House drummer is Matt Sherrod (he played with Beck).

Also, there's a blogger on myspace who is one of the guitar techs for Crowded house. According to his entries, the new CH are currently in a London studio with Steve Lilleywhite, recording some more tracks.

To be fair this information is listed on the new Crowded House microsite. I think it must have been added early by mistake as this was supposed to be a secret fan gig (members of fan club only) with preference going to fully paid up life members.

I'd say it was smaller than the pit section of the Scala in London.
The capacity number will be misleading as the bar area seemed almost as big as the area the band played.

I got mine on the phone - the website was giving me major stress. Hoorah!

Eventually managed to get a supervisor to take the booking on the phone after initially saying it was strictly internet pre-sales only. Website was saying the number of tickets I was attempting to book was unavailable (2) and suggested I request a lower number of tickets. Supervisor was giving a running commentary on the ticket sales as they were coming through - very frustrating "....we've sold 250 and we are allowed to sell 340, oh there goes another 2...". Got there eventually though...

sideshowbob
08-03-2007, 10:04
If you booked on the telephone, you can ask them to add an email address to your booking reference. That way you can track your booking online. I did that and can now see that I've got two tickets for CH at Thekla and that they're waiting for the tickets to come into stock.

340 is a tiny amount of tickets isn't it?

mikegray

Disappointing considering how cheap the tickets were and that the band obviously made a conscious decision not to rip the faithful off. They could have sold the venue several times over at £80 a ticket, I reckon, but chose not to.

Someone listed some the other day though and they had stacks of fake bids from ebay vigilantes. When I last looked it was at £666.66. Looked again later and the seller had pulled it.

Mind you, winner has between 100 to 499 so a lot to waste a negative on.

I think anyone who actually wanted to see them would go and hang the potential ebay profit, after all, what are the chances of paying £37.50 for a pair of tickets to see Crowded House in a titchy venue ever again?

I thoroughly disapprove of ebay vigilante-ism though.

They were on good form at The Outsider at the weekend ... Matt's drumming during Private Universe (in particular) was sterling. I'm still a little ambivalent about "Don't Stop Now" and "She Called Up" ... the la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la bit on the latter is just peculiar. Silent House works well live though. The oldies still work the crowd though ... "Locked Out" is a cracking opener, "Mean to Me" and "When You Come" are also top-notch.

I've waited so long for this album that I'd thought I'd do it justice and give it a full review (trying not to sound too much like Brian Sewell!)

At the end of 2006, like most Crowded House fans, I'd been eagerly scanning the horizon for the signs of the release of Neil Finn's latest solo project. Then in January came the news that the new songs were to be released as the Crowded House comeback album and the wait would be until July, although via a two and a half hour live webcast and numerous radio appearances, some of the new songs were thrown open to public scrutiny.

Due to mail order delays my wait continued, whilst other fans on the web discussed the 14 songs in intricate detail. There were numerous web-sites offering illegal downloads, but I wanted to do this properly. Finally, the long awaited disc hit my player on 5th July (after an additional 10 minute DVD player-related delay!).

The build up to playing the disc is important to the review in that I'd had plenty of time to consider all the ins and outs - it promised dark broody songs, some loved it, some felt left behind by the music, some hated it. All reactions were there, from one end of the spectrum to the other and everything in between.

Which should tell you something about the record - it ain't Status Quo.

On the first listen, it would be very easy to say that Time On Earth doesn't sound like Crowded House, but I don't subscribe to that view. The dark melancholy of Temple Of Low Men sounded nothing like their debut, whilst the joyous harmony-laced pop of Woodface marked a second about turn in three albums. When I think back to 14 years ago and my first listen of Together Alone I can still remember my immediate reaction on that dark Monday evening: this doesn't sound like Crowded House, where are all the melodies of Woodface? But within months their final studio album had cemented it's place near the pinnacle of my all time favourite albums.

So with age comes the foresight that there was no way that 14 years later, and with Paul Hester's passing, that Time On Earth would sound like the previous Crowded House releases. But there are things that don't change and one is Neil Finn's glorious ability to write music that packs the dual punch of both emotion and melody. There are two songs here that rank with the best that Neil Finn has written: Pour Le Monde and Silent House are quick literally, jaw-droppers. The former is beautifally-paced piano-driven song that remains in your head long after the song has finished and the latter, co-written with The Dixie Chicks, is full of dark imagery and fiery but controlled releases of guitar.

Elsewhere, there's the curious but catchy Transit Lounge, complete with it's German airport announcements. Definitely not the Crowded House of old, but all the more welcome for it. There's some funky but understated piano lines in She Called Up and Heaven That I'm Making and a few mid-paced tunes, two of which feature the guitar talents of Johnny Marr. The point has been made that there are a fair number of non-band musicians on this album, but before neagtive thoughts creep in, it's probably a good time to suggest that listeners go and check their liner notes for the other albums.

Normally, it would be hard to give a strong opinion one way or the other after just a couple of listens, but in the hands of Neil Finn's songwriting, you know that there are places aplenty, as yet unidentified, where a line or a lyric will hang back until your 10th listen before entering your brain and refusing to leave. There's the nagging suspicion that tracks such as Nobody Wants To, Say That Again, English Trees and People Are Like Suns fit the bill in this respect.

Nick Seymour supplies the steady bass required of these well-crafted songs, never overplaying but just underpinning his band mate's sound. Leaving enough space between the notes is an oft-forgotten notion in modern music, where all forms of electronic wizardry and processed vocals are shoe-horned like the proverbial musical (or in some cases not so musical) finger in the dyke. Not here, just listen to that bass or piano line or Hammond fill and and you'll hear the sound of the music living and breathing. It's heart is in good shape too.

I like this album, it's challenging, theres more than enough variation and God only knows what listeners who are only familiar with Weather With You will make of it, which can only be good. If there's one thing I do miss about this album, it's the wonderful otherworldy guitar that Mark Hart brought to Togther Alone. But as he was only involved in the final stages of recording, I suppose that's too much to ask and it's just one of the many tantalising prospects that we anticipate for the next installment.

Most artists would kill to have a song like Pour Le Monde or Silent House on their CV; for Crowded House to pull it off twice on a comeback album says it all for me. If the weather hasn't given you enough reason to wish away the summer, then Crowded House's end-of-year UK tour has.

That's an interesting perspective on the album. Like you, I agree it's a shame Mark wasn't a bigger part of the album as he's at least one quarter of the band and has really made the live gigs I've been to this year.

Well I'm only 1.5 listens in, but I'm confident that there's enough material to grow on me. I think that I'd rather it be that way because otherwise, there's an change that I'd go off the songs quicker. Regular buyers of Finn material will probably be familiar with this feeling.

I'm interested myself to see how I feel about it in a couple of months. I don't for one minute think that I'll like it more than Woodface or Together Alone, or even the other albums, but for now, it's good enough.

One annoying thing about the special ed DVD is the Time On Earth [Track By Track Interview]

It's no more than a single 5 min interview. The DVD runtime is about 19mins total

Just thought I'd post to say that having had the CD in my car for a month I've become much more comfortable with it. I wonder if others' views have changed with a bit more listening time?

Crap prices for Liverpool though. Gold circle + VIP ********. Nuts to that. Row "X" being in the "gold circle". FFS.

How many does the arena hold if it can justify a "Gold Circle" ?

I cant imagine Thetford forest being the same - it'll just be a free-for-all

It will. Sorry, but the only gold circle is the ticketbuyer's post reaming by the concert promoter. I HATE the summer pops with a passion.

Still seats available for the shows at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. Picked one up for the Wednesday show earlier. Row C in the circle. Exact same seat as I had for REM back in July.

Came quite late to the 'House, but been a huge fan ever since so looking forward to seeing them in a relatively small venue.

Olympia is a lovely venue - saw REM there also. I've been fortunate in that I saw the Crowdies at Thekla Social for their comeback gig. A lot different to the Nottingham Arena show later last year!
