Just seen Seven Sam and quite enjoyed it, especially Toshiro Mifune :D, so I am looking out for other Kurosawa movies and Yojimbo and the forthcoming Rashomon came to mind. So whats the best region for these two? Is it worth shelling out the extra cash for the criterions for films I haven't seen?? Which'll have the best a/v and extras???

Yojimbo - I have the Criterion release (Review here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=211&story=1999)) which is good, but not great. Having not seen the R2 I can't really offer a comparison, but from reviews they sound about the same, and considering the R1 is just £1 more at ********* i'd go for the Criterion :D

Rashomon - The current R2 is bare bones, £15. Criterion will release what sounds to be a superb SE on March 26th (Details here (http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=138)) although the price is higher - currently the only retailer to list it is Ringos at a quite reasonable £25 asking price. I'd go with the Criterion - try and rent the R2 first though.

Has anyone got the R2 French releases of the Kurasowa movies (Sanjuro, Hidden Fortress etc.)??? If so do they have decent english subs, anamorphic picture etc.???

Thanks

The French releases have NO English subtitles.

From the review of Sanjuro at www.dvdrama.net it would appear they've given it a gorgeous Anamorphic Widescreen transfer - which is hardly surprising given the general quality of French DVD releases.

Can anyone comment on the overall quality of the BFI releases? I've seen the BFI's Seven Sam (got it from the library) and it was pretty decent, quality-wise, for an old film.

The BFI prints are none too bad. Both are better than the soft Yokimbo from what I remember. Certainly, I don't remember feeling disapointed when I watched them.

I've got the BFI Yojimbo and I've got no complaints about it, picture isn't too bad as some people seem to keep pointing out, it's got nice menu's and also a audio commentary on it, which the Criterion doesn't have.
