Dunno if this has been covered on another thread (search is disabled) but has anyone else noticed the terrible pops, crackles and drop-out of the audio on the 2001 R2 disc (the remastered one released last year)

I've played on my home player when I got it and noticed it but didn't pay that much attention. But last nite I had it on the powerbook with headphones and the audio track really was rank (the pb plays everything else fine) - it completely detracted from what is otherwise a classic DVD...

Is it my disc or was the source print this bad??

A major problem with <I>2001</I> is that the music was sourced from less than wonderful library recordings, chosen at the last minute after Kubrick rejected Alex North's original score.

I actually find the Ligeti-scored sequences quite painful to listen to because neither the performances nor the recordings do anything like justice to these extraordinary scores, which I've been lucky enough to sample both live and in far superior recordings made much later by performers far more comfortable with what by any standards are massive technical challenges.

I think the sound on the new DVD is a conspicuous improvement on the old one (which in turn was noticeably better than the awful print that Channel Four used - I thought my videotape had screwed up until I watched a repeat!), but nothing short of a complete re-record is going to make it sound especially wonderful.

Thanks Michael, I was gonna dig up the receipt when I got home as I assumed it was a faulty disc.

The sound dropouts are really conspicuous and marr the film when watching with headphones: takes the punch out of Zarathustra – is this your experience of this disc? DVD Times gave the audio a rating of 8 as I recall – I would have given it a 2.

The problem is consistent throughout the disc, so I'm at a loss as to whether it is faulty or not... unfortunately it's past the 28 days return :(
