I recall there a quite a lot of guitar players here, and Pearl Jam fans
Does anyone know how they get the 'strange' guitar sound on 'I Got ID'? Its a close call between this and 'Immortality' for my favourite PJ song so any info would be appreciated.
My brother in law thinks it could be made by an e-bow, but looking on the web, the only PJ songs where they use an e-bow is 'Wishlist' and something else (which I can't remember) it didn't mention 'I Got ID' though.
I'm not a fan of Pearl Jam so I have no idea what you're talking about but I am a fan of weird guitar sounds. Can you sample a few seconds and put it on line?
Cheers.

I don't know the song but it's possible that they simply reversed the guitar sound in the mix.
It can produce something similar to the e-bow (if I'm right in what I think the e-bow sounds like!!!). If not, I'm sure someone whose used an e-bow will correct me.

No that's somewhat correct. The e-bow uses a rapidly alternating electromagnet (actually it may be two, I can't remember) to vibrate a single string on the guitar, which builds up over time, thus giving a slow attack rising to a loud sound. If you use it over a pickup it can cause a huge feedback effect.
Sounds almost identical to the guitar in 'Moon over Marin' by the Dead Kennedys to me - therefore I'd imagine there's very little trickery just some echo & distortion.
Great tunes though...
I've got something on my multi-fx box called Reverse Delay, which sounds kind of similar. Instead of just echoing (delaying) the played sound, it reverses it (so that the echoed bit plays backwards).
Not sure if that's what he used though :?:

Never heard that song, I'll have to look out for it
Yeah, the guitar effects in 'I Got ID' aren't anything really elaborate but I think its sounds cool. Definately agree about the echo/reverb.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to have a look on the web and see if I can find more info about the song. I wouldn't mind having a go at learning the song and seeing how difficult it is to recreate a reasonably similar effect.

I did a bit of searching and nothing related directly to that song. However there was plenty of information relating to the lack of use of any effect pedals in his setup......he tried the odd one or two and disliked the result.............He is described as a guitarist that is capable of making the guitar sound differently with his hands alone.......dave Gilmour is another who can manage this feat.
Ancedote:
I once met an ex lead guitarist who is now working as one of the leading sound engineers for several big bands called Derek Gilligan. I happened to be in a s/h shop at the time and the shop owner happened to have a really crappy strat copy and starter amp behind the counter.
The guitar was the most tatty thing you could imagine. Rusty strings, no knobs, loose gear heads and damaged neck. Despite the condition Derek picked it up and plugged it in, announcing that 'a bad workman always blames his tools' to our condemnation of the guitar.
For half an hour, this thing produced the most extrodinary sound, going from blazing metal, to delicate blues while we watched open mouthed.
As he left the shop, both the owner and myself made a grab for this wonderful musical instrument. But when we played it sounded exactly what it was......a knackered, ratty, cheap and nast guitar........How he did what he did with that guitar is a mystery and I knew from that day onwards I would never be a great guitarist, because thats what great guitarists can do.
If he doesn't use effects pedals and it sounds like a backwards guitar then he'll be using the volume knob on the guitar, I guess, rolling it up just after hitting a note.

I always thought it was just a bit of feedback, although Pearl Jam do use the e-bow every so often.
Unless you mean the warbly guitar sound in the outro solo?

I remember reading something about a band that had inadvertently tripped over a guitar lead and caused a loose connection, which caused some strange effects on part of the lead work.
On the second take they decided to wiggle the faulty wire to repeat the effect and this became part of the whole performance. Dont loose that faulty cable effect!
don't know if that helps:

Okay, I've figured out what you mean.
The solo from the song is played by Neil Young. It just has a good deal of reverb and delay, a nice dirty distortion, plus Neil Young's fondness for playing in octaves.

Not really - they did a whole album together (Mirrorball).

Mirror Ball - Neil Young with Pearl Jam as backing band (1995)
Mike McCready (Pearl Jams guitarist) recently toured with Neil Young. Source McCready being @ Reading 2006 talking to Edith Bowman (I think!) they've partnered on a quite a few occasions over the years...

You beat me to it
