View Full Version : Buffalo DriveStation - 400Gb £99
400bg hd (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://astore.amazon.co.uk/thedvdforums-21/detail/B000FVVLJI/203-7320838-0946305)
Seemed cheap... could only see the post about the more expensive one... hope its not a dupe
from a search on the comments from the reviewer there, it apparently has a Samsung HD400LJ drive in it, which is SATA 2, 8mb buffer
£82 ex del is the cheapest i could find the drive alone at aria
so another £17 for the external case isnt too bad for the price
Can anyone recommend a good caddy for an internal drive?

The Icy Box's seem to get good ratings. They seem to have lots of different ones available for PATA and SATA drives, with USB, Firewire or External SATA interface. Just make sure you order the correct one!
Check our Aria (http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Name=icy+box) and Savastore (http://www.savastore.com/catalog/search.aspx?initial=true&keyword=icy+box)

Cheers just went for one of these, as I had a gift voucher for £51 from work, so got this for £49 to my pocket. :D
Wouldn't this Lacie 500GB (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(50662)a(60823)url(http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=44LG&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=lacie+500gb&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0)) be better value for money from Dabs? What are these Lacie drives like?
I guess some people might be put off by the Hitachi drive...which is also IDE [ATA133] with an 8Mb cache. Can't fault the vfm though ;)
How about this Western Digital 500GB (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://astore.amazon.co.uk/thedvdforums-21/detail/B000EXZB0M/203-7320838-0946305) at Amazon? I take it the Hitachi Drives are not that great then? Also, whats the difference with IDE and which would be better in your opinion?
Theres way too many of these poping up atm, how about this one too
Philips 320GB 3.5" Desktop Hard Disk Drive USB 2.0 (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://astore.amazon.co.uk/thedvdforums-21/detail/B000JHYAY6/203-7320838-0946305)
The Lacie ones, like almost all of the third party units have whatever drives were cheap that week - they were complaints about overheating in the 250Gb models becuase there was no fan.
WD drives are fine, maxtor used to be the worst but WD bought maxtor - so make what you want.
The hitachi thing is a reference to a bad set of IBM drives ( one model of deskstar - known as deathstar ! ) IBM sold their drive business to Hitachi.
Still tempted by the Lacie because of the price. Hopefully the overheating will not be a problem with a fan now.... looks nice too. Just a trade off with price etc against the WD

I have a WD/maxtor job and it is great had it for a a few years now no problems. I have had two lacies one at work and one bought. Both have borked and been sent back recieved a replaced again same problem a few months later I would avoid lacie. Seagate are great imho tempted by these drives that are kicking about in forums atm.
Do you have a link to the Seagate drives?

Had very few problems myself with Maxtors apart from a particularly old noisy one, WD didn't buy them though - Seagate did.
IMHO the best hard drives at the moment are made by Samsung - quick, quiet and reliable.
This 500Gb 16Mb cache model can be had for £100 http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=327715 Just add an enclosure ;)

ta - some of these deals kicking about are excellent!
I had one of those (well 2 of them) IBM DeskStar drives that both died within weeks of each other! IBM did replace them quickly - which died a few years later.
Currently got 2 x Maxtor 160GB HD's that i've had for about 4 years now! One of the drives has just started to fail - so some of the drive mentioned above would be ideal! :P

It seems to be more of common thing these days unfortunately.
Over heated? Do you have any heatsinks attached? What temperature does it usually run at?
Was the drive running all the time, or powered on/off each day?
I have a total of 5 discs, all with their own cooling system, temperatures weren't an issue and the other 4 discs are all fine. It was running 24/7 but was a 'back up' drive so wasn't actually being written to/read from very often.
