My usual terrible trio: World Video's <I>Ashes of Time</I>, Sheptonhurst's <I>The Pyramid</I> and Madacy's <I>Reefer Madness</I>.

Oh, and Cap'n Al will doubtless nominate <I>Wishbone Ash: Legends of Rock</I>, so I'll save him the trouble!

Reviews of all four can be found at DVD Times - see the link at the top of this page.

I project my movies onto a 72" screen and the worst picture I have ever seen was R1 Highlander - 10th Anniversary Edition. OK extras though and the sound was fine AFAICR. For all three I reckon that Blue Velvet R2 was pretty bad from what I heard.

The Blade, and the R2 versions of the Babycart films all have dire picture quality - to the extent that you cannot actually see what happens in some night scenes!

I doubt any of the above are as bad as <i>The Kid With A Golden Arm</I> (The Telefilms International/Beverly Wilshire Filmworks version)

R1 Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was pretty dire from what I rember (since got rid of it) average bit rate was around 1.5-2.5mps with a washed out print and pixelation galore.

Jude (R2) - P&S, no better than my VHS. As for extras I don't remember anything other than a ropey trailer. I returned the disc, by the way, and live in hope of a decent reissue.

World of Drunken Master... the UK release (though I think its R0). I was expecting it to be incorrectly framed, but having the first 10 mins shunted off the side off the screen, and uneven sound were just massive bonuses I couldn't have expected...

Last Exit To Brooklyn. Worst picture quality in Christendom, with the colours simply all over the place, all the time. Lucky I got it from BlackStar so I could put it in the return mail bag. Not so lucky it got lost in transit (only DVD I've had that happen to -- it was that bad) so I had to wait a couple of months for a refund.

Worst I ever had was Medacy's Metropolis. Absolutely dreadful. I know its an old film but they must have found the worst print that was available, transferred it to Super8, done a video conversion and then transferred it to DVD. Worse than that... no Moroder soundtrack and it were black 'n' white an'all. :)

EiVs Boogie Nights is pretty poor... the only one I have actually taken back because it was rubbish. Incorrectly framed, soft... eeeuuuurrrgh!

No way is Blue Velvet R2 as bad as all that. My copy certainly is 16:9, stereo, has a 45 minute interview with Dennis Hopper, nice little booklet and decent bit-rate... all this for £4.50 in the HMV Sale (with student discount)... not the worst disc by a long shot!

I think he must be referring to the first R2 issue of Blue Velvet which was P&S/4:3 and bloomin' awful picture quality by all accounts.

I strongly suspect he's referring to Castle's thankfully short-lived initial release, which led to the fastest refund I think I've ever demanded - home from Virgin, in and out of my player in 30 seconds and back to the shop within twenty minutes!

Pan-and-scan wasn't the half of it - it was a dreadful print and an appalling, artefact-riddled transfer. Even someone unfamiliar with the film would have despised this version - and anyone who was would have experienced mental and aesthetic torture.

Not that good, though - it should be 2.35:1, so you're still missing a fair chunk of the picture, and David Lynch's films badly need the original aspect ratio. At the moment, the best <I>Blue Velvet</I> is MGM's anamorphic R1 disc, though a Lynch-supervised special edition is apparently on the cards for this year.

A lot of the entries here have been for older/early releases (Highlander Anniversary Ed., Blue Velvet etc.) and, whilst I'm not excusing their poor quality, it stands to reason that there would be some dogs on the loose in the early days.

IMHO the discs that deserve this award are ones released in the last 18 months to 2 years, since the DVD market really took off and discs such the Matrix started appearing. A good example of this behaviour is from Universal UK, who continue to release poor quality pan&scan discs such as the recent 'Silent Running', 'Smokey and Bandit', and 'Watership Down' last year. There's simply no excuse for that any more.... :(

I would have to nominate most of the films in both Hitchcock Collection boxes - the R1 discs have the correct aspect ratio, so why does R2/4 get horrible P&S **** on most of them? The only exceptions being the earlier films such as Shadow of a Doubt that were filmed in 4:3.

Predator Region 2. What a bad DVD - this disc has chunks and chunks of the film out. I threw it away, it was that bad.
