View Full Version : re-discovered my love for metal - what next?

i have recently re-discovered my love for hard rock/metal after watching a documentary about pantera.
i bought a couple of their albums, along with downloading tracks from rage against the machine.
however, as i have neglected this genre for so long, i don't really know what other bands i should be listening to. i used to be a big iron maiden/faith no more fan back in the late 80s and early 90s and would borrow compilation tapes from schoolfriends (which had helloween, skid row etc.).
so people, who should i listen to next? i must stress that i dislike college rock like green day.
Use www.last.fm for ideas.

Avoid any bands that include members having star tattoos about their person or really stupid, floppy fringes that cover half their face. Those bands will be ****, really, really ****.
Listen to:
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Life of Agony - Ugly
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal

I still cant do Opeth. I bought Blackwater and finally sold it, now I have Ghost Reveries and despite multiple listens and the strange feeling that I should like them......I just dont. I would rather listen to Coheed and Cambria-Burning Star IV. It seems strange that we like virtually the same music, but not Opeth, weird. Maybe its because I err towards the punk/pop end of the spectrum and that is towards the more serious, sober end.

I can understand that you wouldn't, they're not the easiest band to grasp. I'm not really a fan of punk, although I like Green Day, Rancid & early Offspring. Sum41, while I wouldn't buy their albums, they're pretty cool live and I enjoyed watching them the few times I've caught them at festivals.

Cult of Luna
Isis
Scissorfight
I've quite liked like The Haunted's 'The Dead Eye' lately and Mastodon's 'Blood Mountain'.

I had a twinge about putting cult of luna on the list, then I thought it would have to have the Dillinger Escape Plan and before you know it your bordering on Black Metal....Agalloch, GSYBE etc
deftones - around the fur.
absolute classic
I'd also add Lacuna Coil to that list - any album, but Comalies is my fave (tho the cover of enjoy the silence from the most recent album is great!)

But Miss Murder is a quality tune, especially with the extended video
Remember that when at metal gigs use anyone weighing half a ton and wearing a 25th anniversary gig t-shirt for a band they saw 25 years ago as something to bounce off when down the front since they are making most newer bands gigs look like a Status Quo nostalgia fest :gag:

Korn - Greatest Hits Vol 1 (Saves getting individual albums, unless you wish to)
Digimortal is Fear Factory's worst album by far, to the point where I think they've pretty much disowned it. To the OP: If you wanna get into Fear Factory, do not buy Digimortal.
Korn - Greatest hits, why would you buy this? Just buy the debut self titled and Life Is Peachy and forget they recorded anything else because the rest sucks.

The OP asked for suggestions, so im suggesting some. I personally think Digitmortal is excellent, and Concrete is by far the worst FF album out of them all. But horses for courses and all that.
As for Korn, i never liked the self titled so much, and found Life is Peachy and Follow the Leader to be two of the best. The new album aint so bad either.

I thought all nu-metal kiddies either grew up, killed themselves or became emo kids. I'm amazed there are still some around.
Concrete by Fear Factory is mainly a compilation of unreleased tracks and demos recorded prior to their major label debut, so to say it's their worst album is a tad unfair considering they had no involvement in its release. Concrete was released by Roadrunner to cash in on the band after they split. They split basically because they recorded Digimortal.

Metal stuff i'm enjoying at the moment -
Church of Misery - The Second Coming
Clutch - The Elephant Riders
Down - Nola
Graves at Sea/Asunder split
Lair of the Minotaur - Carnage
Mind Eraser - Cave
The Sword - Age of Winters
Graves at Sea/Asunder split
I bow to that one. The new Asunder is out now too. This sort of stuff is one of my big loves.
Although, in fairness, I don't think if the OP is listening to Pantera, RATM and Maiden that the likes of Asunder, Graves at Sea, Church of Misery and probably even Lair of the Minotaur are going to be his thing... yet! ;)

Ah but we've all got to start somewhere :)
I saw Church of Misery in camden last year, I think it was october. Anyway, they remind me a bit like pantera at times - big dirty redneck riffs, though in most parts a lot slower. Good stuff to rock out too, and relatively unheard of which is a shame.

Today, I am mostly listening to.... Mendeed.
They are an ace new band, who are playing a sort of melodic metal - actually very good. Much better than I am able to describe anyway...

Mastodon's Remission is superb, but they seem to have gotten progressively poorer, and now that they are signed up and have moved away from Relapse I feel that they've lost that gritty edge they once had....a shame.

I saw them at Donington in '95. I was right at the front and for most of the gig Sean was positioned on stage more or less above me. She spent most of the time with her foot up on a monitor whilst wearing a short skirt. It has to be said that it was a very good view. The band were amazing live. Definitely one of the best I've ever seen.

I'd recommend either of the last two Iron Maiden albums, Metallica St Anger,Slayer Christ Illusion.
I am getting old now (37) and find it a struggle to like any of the newer generation of metal (Linkin Park/system of a down aside). Almost all of the albums on my mp3 player are 70/80/90s metal/rock, Hendrix/RATM/metallica/Slayer/Suicidal/Bad Brains/Misfits etc etc Ive tried listening to Mastodon, Dragonforce and many others but nothing seems to have the reaction that I used to have listening to the new albums by Kiss/Saxon/maiden then Metallica/Slayer/Celtic Frost (these guys are back and mean business). Nothing seems "special" anymore...... :oh-hum:
I saw White Zombie at the Astoria (I think, not Brixton?) for their Astro Creep - 2000 album. Can't recall who supported but the gig was pretty damn good, though the band sounded just like the CD, not a raw live show. :suspect:

They played Brixton for the Astro Creep tour, I know this because I was 15/16 at the time and wasn't able to buy tickets for myself when I called up the venue. :(
I think it was Prong who supported them on the UK leg of the tour.
Hm, must of got there late as don't recall who the support was. Yup, just confirmed this with my other half who accompanied me to the gig, she says that all she can remember is that every song sounded the same. Women, eh?

A truly seminal album! Especially the 'correct' version that Tee Pee did where it is a single 63 minute song.

That's probably the worst of their albums.
I don't know why it is, but all Swedish melodi-death metal bands seem to be getting ****. (Obviously, there's one or two exceptions).
Children of Bodom were pretty solid until the latest album, sure each album might have had a weak track here and there, but overall, they were good. The most recent effort, I till have not been able to get into, which is a shame as I love pretty much everything else they've done.
Stand out albums: Hatebreeder & Follow The Reaper.
In Flames were awesome until the release of Clayman. That album was pretty good, Bullet Ride & Pinball Map being the stand out tracks, but everything else after that was ******* dreadful. I think Anders Friden decided he wanted to change the band's direction to make more money, unfortunately he did this on the back of the nu-metal era, so Reroute To Remain was a very weak sounding nu-metal wannabe album, Then came the birth of Metal-core so he then decided to jump on that bandwagon. Therefore, the style of the next album changed again. The situation was made worse as they started touring with every metal-core band they could find.
Stand out albums: Colony & The Jester Race.
Soilwork, much like In Flames, were awesome once. They started to go to **** about the time In Flames did (influences, anyone?), I think that album was Natural Born Chaos and while they never descended to the depths that In Flames did, for that album and I think the next, there was a drop in quality and style, but they listened to the issues that the fanbase had with those and pulled themselves back up for the next album, and while it's not as good as the early albums there is a significant improvement overall.
Stand out albums: Chainheart Machine, Steel Bath Suicide & A Predators Portrait. (Why three albums and not two? because they're still probably my favourite of all the bands I've written about here).
Dark Tranquillity had Anders Friden (In Flames' current dread-locked cock weasel) as the vocalist for their debut effort, but this was back when he wasn't a money hungry cash cow, that album was pretty cool. Anders then left and Michael Stanne was recruited to replace him, since then DT, like CoB have remained pretty much constant with the style and quality of each album.
Stand out albums: Damage Done & The Gallery.
I'm sure there's more Swedish death metal bands I could write about, but my mind has just gone blank.

The most recent Ministry album, Rio Grande Blood, is a bit of a return to form: certainly the best thing they've done since Filthpig. Much thrashier than they used to be though. Admittedly, it is pretty much just Jourgensen now.
That's probably the worst of their albums.

Haha oops. The other three are Swedish though, even though CoB aren't. Maybe I should just change my post to say "European melodi-death metal bands" :D
Makes me sad everytime i listen to some of the mentioned bands now... in flames especially... up to clayman, which i really enjoy still  I didn't mind the more recent soilwork albums so much, get quite "catchy" after a number of listens. Pretty much enjoy all of bodom though, they've yet to let me down.
Another suggestion is Carcass. Its all good, to varying degrees. Start with the more "recent"(not really recent at all  ) albums and work your way backwards for less of a shock.
edit: I'm sure i saw mention of the last slayer album (christ illusion?). Was i the only one who really couldnt get into it? was maybe one or two tracks i could enjoy after a while but on the whole i found really disappointing :(
