View Full Version : 6th Sense Vs Unbreakable
I only got around to watching Unbreakable the other night and despite what some mates have said, I found Unbreakable a lot better than SS.
The main problem for me with SS was it was too slow and boring until the end, whereas Unbreakable kept my interest throughout.
Any opinions on this?

Shayamalan is much more relaxed for Unbreakable clearly shown in his more elaborate photography, and I think the film is better for it.
My personal favourite is by far Unbreakable.

I *hated* Sixth Sense when I first saw it, but thought it improved with repeated viewings. Unbreakable just grabbed me from the very start and I notice something new every time I rewatch it.
I'd have to go with Unbreakable
I loved The Sixth Sense but because I have M.E. (look it up in a medical book) Unbreakable has to win it.

well, just to be an awkward bugger I'm going to disagree with everyone else ;)
Having enjoyed the Sixth Sense both our lass and I were looking forward to watching 'unbreakable' - maybe it was me, but the movie was kind of built up being a little too similar in style to Sixth Sense - played a bit too much on the 'paranormal' angle, which isn't really true.
The film is average at best in my opinion. I can understand why so many people enjoy the film, but for me the hype far out-weighed the end-product - perhaps I was looking forward to it too much. When it finished I just thought 'is that it' and why do I get the impression that this directors movies will all end up with a 'twist' ending.
Still, each to their own - hell - I love the Godzilla movie for crying out loud ;)
I'd have to say SS is the better of the two.
I enjoyed both films.I Haven't got a preference.

I prefer the sixth sense myself. Thought it had a lot more emotion running through it with the twist really thought out. Unbreakable while good just did'nt have the same emotional aspect plus I thought that it would have been good to see Bruce Willis' character show more of his 'super' powers' (the battle between him and the murderer was a bit too quick for my liking and the character seemed to stumble). I also thought the twist just seemed to be thrown in at the last minute maybe because Shayamalan thought he had to have a twist. None of the subtle hints like the sixth sense.
Mind you i like them both anyway!!:D

I was going to say that I agreed with everything Mr Flibble said, and then I noticed the Godzilla comment.
SS is the better film though.
I found the Sixth Sense far too boring. But unbreakable held my interest much more. So I'll go for Unbreakable :)
The problem with The Sixth Sense was far too slow - even for a short film.
Unbreakable, though, I absolutely loved, and was one of my favourite films of last year

That's cmplicated, that one...
OK, Sixth sense maybe had a better stooryline and a far better twist.. However, Unbreakable's story was much more original and interesting, it held your interest better, even if it didn't that an extrenmely clever twist, but still quite a good one...
Unbreakable shows he's improving his stye with every film and the style is better, he's more professional as a director, and the pacing with his script is better too. It's tough, but I think it's a tie, two exceptioanl films. I've got Unbreakable Vista Series which is a great set, and I've pre-ordered Sixth Sense Vista Series due out 15/01, Can't wait for it Two essential films for my collection :):)
I thought Sixth Sense was by far the best of the two as Unbreakable was one of the top ten worst movies ever IMHO. No story whatsoever, though each to their own.

How can you say it had no story? It obviusly did, unless you watched it on mute and with your eyes closed?

I was really looking forward to Unbreakable (maybe thats a problem in itself) but I was really disappointed. As Mr Flibble said I found the plotting way too similar to Sixth Sense.
I enjoyed Sixth Sense initially but I found it lacking on repeat viewings and my feelings were as they were when I first saw it. I was knocked out by the ending but I think it relies too much on the twist - the rest of the story is OK but nothing really rivetting. When I got to the end of Unbreakable, I was still thinking... "is that it?" Maybe I'll give it another go in the future but until then how about Sixth Sense vs. Unbreakable: Spot the Difference. :)

Has to be sixth sense for me. Original movies are rare 1 or 2 a year? Unbreakable looks and feels like someone set out with the intention of making a movie with a twist. "ooh 6th sense made lots of bucks.. lets do it again.. but what can the twist be?"
Having said that I didn't see it coming until it was on top of me. Probably cos I was dozing off. Oh and another thing. The train crash was hyped on all the trailers but what of it? Probably cos they coudn't top The Fugitive.

Have to be Sixth Sense i think, Loved the twist at the end.
Didnt enjoy Unbreakable as much as i was expecting the twist.
Both good films though from a new (ish) director
Still, each to their own - hell - I love the Godzilla movie for crying out loud
I've got Godzilla on DVD :D
Anyway, I thought I was going to be in the minority about this but it looks like it's 50/50 at the moment.

My thoughts coming out of your hand (Except I don't like the Godzilla movie....).
"Sixth Sense" gave us a new visually style not seen previosly and a surprise ending which was 'surprisingly' good. "Unbreakable" was ok, but in my head just a "Sixth-Sense-look-a-like" (explained very simple!) if you ask me.
The Sixth Sense: 4.5/5
Unbreakable: 3/5
I liked Unbreakable a lot better ,but probably because i'm a big Comic book nut so i might be a bit bias.

Personally I prefer 6th sense to unbreakable. Very rarely is there a movie that really surprises you in the end. Unbreakable was from the get go designed to be a series. I forget the exact reasons but that plan was later scraped. The result is that there is plenty of character development but little of substance. It left me wanting to see more.

Is there no end to your fine taste sir?
'I'm going, I'm going, I'm going deeper underground' - bit of class!
I think if you accept that the entire film is really there to serve the contrivance that is it's twist, and that the tone is, at times, verging on the syrupy, then the Sixth Sense is not without merit. A couple of set-pieces work well and Toni Collette's performance is outstanding. I don't feel quite so generous towards Unbreakable - the climax stretched even my willing suspension of disbelief and is an extremely slim 'development' on which to balance a 2 hour film. It's simply a stupendously shallow narrative. However, I thought the 'killer scenes' were fabulous and suggest to me that MNS is a tremendously gifted orchestrator of scene - it's the writing that's his weak point. I'd be interested to see what he did with third party scripts, but I suspect it might not work. I'm reminded of Scene by Scene last year when Mark Cousins said to James Coburn, after Coburn had said he'd like to work with Spielberg, "He's not cynical enough for you." Same goes - in spades - for MNS.
for me personally it has definitely got to be Unbreakable, i just enjoyed the whole story a lot more and found it much more riveting.
However, having said that i still really love Sixth Sense, i just prefer the 'superhero' storyline of Unbreakable.
Can't wait to see MS's next film about crop circles.....
