View Full Version : Virtua Racing (PS2)
Just bought the Sega Classics for the PS2 in the Jan sales for a tenner.
I only really wanted it for VR Racing, a game I have fond memories of when I were a wee lad.
However, its a decent conversion - ish, but they appear to have messed up the engine sounds something awful.
On the arcade original you can tell quite clearly that the engine note rises and falls in accordance to what gear and revs the car is supposed to be doing. On the PS2 conversion, the engine note stays constant no matter what gear you are in.
Bit sloppy really.

Oh, its also virtually (no pun intended) impossible to spin off, in the arcade version if you cornered too quick and "slid" for too long, you would eventually spin after maybe sliding for a few seconds. The same with the grass, if I recall correctly, hitting the grass whilst cornering was an instant spin out, which isn't the case on the PS2 conversion.
I'm thinking of buying the SEGA Classics collection for the PS2, didn't think it was released until January. I wonder how much money people on XBOX Live would have to pay to get all the games in this collection through XBOX Live Arcade. Don't think the Streets of Rage games are in this collection though.
Edit: Sorry, I was thinking of the Mega Drive Collection which isn't released until 2nd of Feb. That collection contains:
Alex Kidd In The Enchanted Castle
Altered Beast
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Decap Attach starring Chuck D. Head
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
Ecco Jr.
Kid Chameleon

Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium

Sega Classics Collection would've been great if it included emulated versions of the original arcade games. However all it contains is the specially "updated" versions by a dedicated team Sega set up in Japan (called Sega Ages I think).
The problem is that in most cases they've completely failed to capture the essense (and most importantly core gameplay) of the original. Virtua Racing is actually one of their better efforts as they've left it mostly as it was (although as you say it still feels off). OutRun is terrible, and Golden Axe almost made me cry.

They released Virtua Fighter 2 on the MegaDrive?
Was it some kind of 32X version?

Wow, I used to spend loads of cash on playing Virtua Racing in the arcades and in the pub. That YouTube vid really takes me back!
The Megadrive collection looks interesting - I used to really annoy my family by playing Columns all the time and I can still remember the music. :D

No the 32X had just a basic version of Virtua Fighter, i think I was the only person to buy it :(
Virtua Fighter 2 on the megadrive was a 2D version of it. All the same characters just in 2D. Came right at the end of the megadrives life, don't think it was meant to be that good.

Reminds me of Duke Nukem 3D on the megadrive which although 3D was incredibly basic and very limited. If I remember rightly the megadrive version of VF2 had a 3D look to the characters as if they were rendered in 3D but were actually 2D sprites. I was never a megadrive/genesis fan anyway as the snes always ruled that generation!!!
