Must've been a good 4/5 years ago I saw this on BBC2 or C4, one of the first foreign films I just thought I'd watch with no reccomendations. Anyway, it was almost definately Italian, and the plot involved a middle aged guy driving around on a moped meeting people and seeing things going on.

Any ideas? Surely it's a relatively big foreign film to get on British terrestrial TV.

It was probably Nanni Moretti's 'Caro Diario'. A very good film. Hope it is available on DVD soon.

There don't appear to be any DVDs available anywhere of Moretti's work, despite his latest film The Son's Room (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0208990) gaining some prize at Cannes. I agree that Caro diario is a great film, very unusual but compelling.

Thanks! Looks like the one.

Cheapest I can find it (on VHS of course :( ) is at:
http://www.absound.ca/music/dvd/ms-2.cgi?upc=065935116363

$6USD isn't too bad I suppose.

Wait!, found it on DVD:

No idea if it has subtitles though. :(

I'd guess that:

Lingue sottotitoli: -

Means that there are no subtitles of any sort :(

The fact that the "Lingue doppiaggio" section is also blank gives cause for hope, as that should definitely read "Italiano"!

Incidentally, I thoroughly recommend Aprile, the only other Moretti film to get a UK release - I preferred it to Caro Diario, though seeing it with an Italian friend who helpfully explained the more parochial jokes and references definitely helped!

Looks like it has no English subtitles. I've found a review, and a couple of other Italian shops selling it and they all say '-' or just 'Italiano' for subtitles. The cheap VHS from ABsound it is then. :(
