What is this difference between DPL2 and DPL1?

DPLII has stereo rear channels and full range frequency response on the rears and centre channel.

I assume its a digital format then? Why would Dolby bring out competition for Dolby Digital?? And why not call it Dolby Digital 2? :confused:

DPL2 is an extension (so to speak) of DPL1 and NOT Dolby Digital..

If its not digital how does it work? How can you get effectively 4 different channels from a standard stereo VHS tape? :confused:
