OK - here's my set up:

Sony 525 player (R2 only)
Kenwood 5050 amp

The player is connected to the telly via a ribbon scart lead, the sound from the player to the amp is sent via an optical lead.

Whilst watching a few discs lately I'm more and more convinced that the sound is ever so slightly out of sync. Mrs Flibble was watching 'Pride and Prejudice' last night on DVD - a disc that I've previously never experienced any problems with, and the more I watched the more I became convinced it was slightly out, but I can't decide if it IS out of synch, or if I've convinced myself too much!

The first thing I'm going to do is listen to the sound via the TV speakers - that should rule out a dodgy lead (which it could be perhaps) Thing is, if there is a problem with the lead, would it not be sending out sound at all?

But what else could it be? Might the lens need cleaning, or could there be a problem with the laser on the player? I'm guessing that if its the latter it would be cheaper to buy a new player.

Any help (as always) is appreciated :)

Back in my earlier days on this forum I remember reading about lip sync problems on earlier Sony players. I can't remember if there was a fix, or Sony just came out with a newer, better model. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess!

Thing is, I've had this player for over a year without any problems at all - it's only just started to 'happen' (if it is happening

More investigation needed I think, does cleaning the lens with one of those disc cleaner things make any difference to a players performance?

I doubt cleaning the lense will help a problem like poor lip sync. You can try a pause/stop and start and see if the situation improves...

Worth a try I reckon mate :)

I had a Sony 525 had I got rid of it because the lip sync got soooooo bad I couldn't watch some films properly.

Sometimes pausing or stoping the film and pressing play again resolved it.

Have a Sony 535 now and have not noticed any lip sync problems :)

had a few minor problems like this on my old Pioneer 717.

as well as pause/ play, try going back to the last chapter mark,
which should re-sync the audio again.

I've had a Sony 525 since May 99.

Lip synch was a known problem on the 325/525/725s.

Funny thing is I used to get it but find it's quite rare now. If you scan back a few seconds and continue to play it will rectify itself.

I might be talking cack but you may be able to update the firmware?

According to Techtronics (http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-sony-dvp-s525d-525-multi-region-dvd-player.html) the updated version should be 2.6

I remember inquiring about this with Techtronics when I had mine. They said I would have to pay for their multi-region mod to get the firmware upgrade as I did not purchase it from them

Hence I got shot of it.

Thanks for the replies - funnily enough I was showing a friend the U2 DVD last night and the lip synch seemed ok

Is there any way I can check my firmware number?

I bought my player from Currys (I know, don't laugh at me :( )

Would they be able to upgrade the firmware? I've also contacted Sony to see if they can advise me on anything too - thanks everyone :)

There was a three button combination that gave you access to the engineers menu (with firmware version). Can't remember it though.

Sorry. it's been a while.

scanning back for a few secs. usually works if not put into st.by press title clear on remote to get s. menu up. click on the type of disc you have problems with and follow on screen instructions.DONT change anything youre not sure of.

Thanks - I'll try that too :)

I've Emailed the nearest Sony Centre (Edinburgh) and asked them about any firmware problems - hopefully they might be able to help too.

Rang the sony centre - the guy said that he wasn't aware of any continous problems that this player had with lip synch - but I could take it in and they would send it to get repaired.

I hoped they could just pop in a DVD and upgrade the firmware that way - can't be without my player for too long :(
