Having just watched Amélie on DVD (for the sixth time now  ), I've just realised how similar elements of it are very similar to Three Colours: Blue... It's simply astonishing... It's almost like Amélie is a US remake of the Kieslowski film (which is making me start to dislike Amélie now ;) )

but look at this

Amélie works in a café = Julie spends a lot of the film in one

Amélie lives by herself in Paris and has little contact with the outside world = Julie does too

Amélie finds it hard to make contact with the man she loves as she is scared of confronting reality = julie rejects the man who loves him as she's seeking her "liberté"

the Male lead works in a porn shop = the second female lead works as a stripper in Pigalle (OK not exactly the same but you get the idea)

The film ends with a look at all that Amélie has done around her = the film ends with a look at all the people that Julie has touched...

Both Amélie and Julie have a strange relationship with their only parent

Both Tautou and Binoche have a similar physique down to their hairstyle...

There's some more stuff that I can't remember right now but am I the first to have thought about this? or am I really just clutching at straws?

Well, I think you're clutching at straws, but what do I know?

I am confused by your comment "US remake" though. I thought it was French.

I really enjoyed both movies for very different reasons.

Finally I think the major difference between the two is the word cute. Blue is a lot of things (brilliant being one) but NEVER cute.:D

But they are so different thematically!

Blue is about Freedom, and her attempts to cut her ties to all people in order to be free from hurt. This new found freedom, though, becomes a prison.

Amelie is about doing little things in life for people and bringing wonder back to them - It's much more aobut imagination and creativity.

Both are superb films.

Amelie is as similar to 3C-B as The Magnificent Seven is to Heaven's Gate!

That's a little lost on me as I haven't seen Heaven's Gate (yet!)... I still think there is some uncanny similarities there but not enough to warrant a lawsuit... it's pretty amazing though as you'd imagine those films to be at different ends of the spectrum...

Another crazy idea I've had to file under the "lunacy" area!
