The 77c1 is a great speaker IMO but I would probably go for either the 771e's or 702e's for front speakers, they both have a bit more impact again IMO. A pair of 700's or 701's make fine surrounds though :).

Adding my recommendation for the 77C1. IMHO, it isn't a great match for the 700s or 701s as it seems to totally outshine them them sonically. Oh, and 700s do indeed make great rears.

Well, i actually use a 77c1 and 701's, and I'm more than happy with the sound i get. You certainly could do a lot worse for that kind of money.

Only MHO, as stated. I'm using 77C1 (centre), 700s (fronts) and old 731(?)s as rears. The sound is way better than anything I've heard before, but I do note increased fidelity when things pan to centre/away.

Maybe the 701s are much better. My room tends towards base heavy, so I skimped on the fronts.

At the end of the day, audio is subjective. If it sounds right, its right. :)

Yes, the 77c1 is a good speaker.
Why not match it up with a pair of 772s.
Would come to £220 (or £240 depending on the finish).
The 772 is about the same size as the 701, but has a real wood veneer finish, and is a more articulate speaker all round - would be a fine match for the 77c1.
I'm assuming you want the beech finish, from the price you quoted - the 772 in beech looks a lot better than it's vinyl wrapped sibling, the 701.
(BTW, I use 701s, so I have nothing against them - fine speakers for the money, and probably a bit more bass capable then the 772, but perhaps not as articulate)

If that's too much, you could go with your suggestion, but also take a look at Kef Cresta2 fronts, with a Cresta centre.
They would cost £120 for all 3, and would give little away in performance terms - depending on the amp you have, they may even sound better, as Mission 701s are not as tolerant of bright sounding amps as some other speakers.
The only brickbat is that the Crestas are rear ported, so shouldn't really be placed right up against a wall.
Also consider a pair of front ported Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 and the matching centre - should be around £170ish.

Unfortunately, neither are available in beech - the alternative to black is cherry in both cases.
Someone's already mentioned Tannoy MX for a light wood finish alternative.
