just got a snide viewing of this and i must say i'm quite surprised by it! Enjoyed this very much, its a very dark and sinister film and some of the killings are pretty gruesome. Johnny Depp's accent is bearable and Heather Graham looks a bit skanky for a whore (which was probably right at the time).
Coltrane plays a good part in it as Sergeant too.
Don't wanna say too much, i dunno how to do spoiler tags, but i'd recommend it....4 star.
hopefully the DVD release will contain some good documentaries and some deleted scenes.

testing,

funny part when depp calls a desk clerk a knob lol. something like "you want me to stand here like a ******* idiot i dunno where his office is you knob" - sounds mad in his cockney accent!!

Like that but use [ and ] instead of the : at each end as follows:

Spoiler goes here

Take out the _ from each end and you get

Spoiler goes here

Most vB tags work the same way ie. and (without the _'s obviously :))

HTH

Edit Doh! You'd already sussed it! :)

As a fan of the graphic novel I just want to ask - is this more of a whodunnit or does it follow the novels line that you know who did it but cannot help the morbid fascination?

Have read two contradictory statements, one either way...
I would think they have gone for a whodunnit though....

Also heard that it is really manky/Gross/Gory....

Just finished reading the graphic novel (excellent, though obviously quite gory and chilling at times), so I'm looking forward to seeing how the film stands up to it.

I was looking forward to this one immensely, being interested in the Jack the Ripper 'legend' for some time, and it did not disappoint. Virtually every aspect of it was inspired in some way, from the superb cinematography and set design to the excellent performances. The brothers Hughes bring much the same to the film that Shekhar Kapur brought to <i>Elizabeth</i>; namely, a fresh and original viewpoint to a potentially staid subject.

The film works superbly as both a straightforward serial killer drama- <i>Seven</i> in Victorian England would not be at all bad a description- and also as a fiendishly intelligent look at the Ripper legend. I haven't read the graphic novel- although I'm planning on doing so- but the conclusion reached by the film is presumably the same, and it's a very persuasive one, managing to cover all the various sources of speculation to some extent or other.

The downbeat ending was also a pleasant surprise, although the fact that the Heather Graham character survived felt like a sop to the box office.
