View Full Version : GoodFellas aspect ratio

I have a weird problem with the R2 GoodFellas flipper.
I own a cheapo Bush widescreen TV which has two ratio modes - 4;3 & 16;9, and a Bush DVD2000.
The GoodFellas case says the film is 1:85:1 but when I play it on my widscreen, it plays in letterbox mode, stretching the picture if the TV is set to 16:9.
On the TV remote I have to revert back to 4:3 mode to see an 'unstretched' image but then the whole picture is centralized in the center of the screen - with black borders all round!!
I'm totally convinced its something to do with the disc, or the way the disc is comunicating with the player or TV, but the film is DEFINITELY 1:85:1.
Other 1:85:1 films fill the screen perfectly. Does anyone know why this occurs?

Goodfellas is non-anamorphic (?). Therefore the picture when stretched to 16x9 is stretching a 4:3 image as opposed to a squashed 16x9 one. Use one of your tvs zoom modes or stick to buying anamorphic discs.

I thought about zoom but my TV doesn't have it, but I'm sure I have other non-anamorphic 1:85:1 films that fully fill the screen.
So is GoodFellas one of a kind?

I reckon it's a mistake on the case.
If you ask me it's 2.35:1 - non-anamorphic, NOT 1.85:1 as stated on the case, 'cos it's the same on my set-up.

According to the IMDB it was shot in 1.85:1 - info can be seen here (http://us.imdb.com/Technical?0099685) ;)

<B>If you ask me it's 2.35:1 </B>
Just as well I didn't, isn't it? :D
<U>Every</U> Scorsese film prior to his Universal deal in 1991 was shot in 1.85:1 or narrower - the reason being that Scorsese was well aware that the vast majority of his audience would watch his films on TV or video, thanks to their relatively poor theatrical performance, and he wanted them to suffer as little damage as possible, so open-matte 1.85:1 was the best compromise.
In a late 1980s interview, he confessed to being "obsessed" with Scope (i.e. 2.35:1), but fearful of using it because of the video issue - but now that widescreen presentation has become far more accepted, coupled with the fact that his 1990s films have had much better theatrical distribution, all his post-<I>Cape Fear</I> films have been in 2.35:1.

Sorry to drag this old thread up, but i've just bought this off a mate for £3.
The AR is absolutely terrible. I probably should have waited for the SE release.

My god, I thought MB was back for a moment there!
:D
Why on earth did you buy it, even at £3!
This is THE WORST DVD EVER!
Non-anamorphic, no-extras, poor transfer, flipper, snapper case.
:gag::gag::gag::gag:
It's also one of the oldest DVDs.
I wish they'd stop selling it and spare the poor punters from buying this crud until the SE is released:oh-hum: (which is probably about the most desired DVD in the world EVER)

I sold my copy for £6-50 on E-bay last week
Non-anamorphic 1.85 will look like a 2.35 on a widescreen TV.. non-anamorphic 2.35 - now that is just horrible..

The Abyss and Strange Days ain't too bad.
Strange Days 2.35 Non-anamorphic is bad simply because the picture is literally a letterbox even on a widescreen plasma..

I'd never seen Goodfellas before.
There's a proper version coming out within weeks
...alledgedly.
It was on Channel 4 a few weeks ago.

yep.
first forums thread on it here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288655)
and
artwork and menus at DVDAnswers (http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?r=0&s=1&c=3908)
that third screen obviously confirming the henry hill commentary track.

Not having a plasma screen, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Can't you just zoom/stretch the picture like any normal non-anamorphic dvd? The PQ on those two is certainly better than a few anamorphic transfers I've seen...
