View Full Version : Problems with Godfather on Wharfedale M5?

Anyone else had problems playing the Godfather on a Wharfedale M5? On mine, around chapter 2, during some of the dancing scenes, the picture freezes for a split second every now and then. However, I've found that if I switch from analogue sound output to digital, everything runs smoothly again. But in silence, which is a bit useless.

I've noticed the freezing problem on a couple of other discs (Airplane and Phantom Menace), but neither were as bad as Godfather.

So, do I have a duff player, or is the DD decoding on the Wharfedale just bobbins?

And since, either way, I've got no chance of getting a replacement, can anyone recommend a decent budget multi region player with DD decoding?

If your serial number (on a little sticker next to the component video output sockets on the reverse of the player) starts 122xxxx chances are you've got one of the early models with the iffy DVD loaders, which can result in the problems you mention. I'd take it back to Tesco and ask for a swapsie - however, they are running out fast and don't intend restocking. Try to get one with a serial number starting 127xxxxx or 128xxxxx (the serial number is also on the carton in Tesco's warehouses).

If you're happy sticking with Sampo, the Reoc A5 is a worthy substitute at £129 from Safeway and has just DD decoding (no dts decoding, alas) :)

Nah, it's 128xxxx 2001/4. I made sure I got an up to date one when I bought it.

Well my local Tesco doesn't have any left, so I suppose it depends on whether they'll be able to get one in for me. It'd just be so annoying to go through all that and end up with a replacement that also wouldn't play the Godfather.

To be honest, with my 60 quid Bush speakers I can't really notice a difference between DD and DTS anyway, so this might be good replacement. Assuming it'll play the Godfather of course.

Take it back and ask for a refund, then order a pioneer dv444 from

http://www.avland.co.uk/pioneer/dv444/offer.htm

I did that and the quality improvement is amazing. It will only end up costing you 30 quid to upgrade and I guarantee it is worth it.

Tescos won't argue about a refund. Just asy it won't play your DVDs, they don't even ask questions.

I also have problems with the sound on my M5 with GF box all three films. Switching to digital out also fixes it. My serial starts 127xxxxx
The specs on the Pioneer look similar except for no DD/DTS decoding which I dont really need (will be upgrading to AV amp soon).

The specs are similar but the picture is far superior.

Cheers gz5ztg, but I'm really looking for something with a DD decoder.

Will this particular Pioneer play R1 T2 UE?
Have Pioneer overcome their seamless branching glitch?
