I have an old goodmans 4:3 tv and have recently bought a pioneer 444 dvd player....the dvd player can switch between Pal , NTSC or pal 60. Apparently pal 60 is no use on my TV as it plays the picture in colour but keeps rolling....and when I try NTSC it's black and white and keeps rolling.

The tv does not have a vertical hold....

Someone said I need an NTSC to PAL 50 scart lead apparently...any thruth ???? ARRRGGGHHHH !!!!!

are you connecting it via scart? have you tried setting the player to RGB output?

I have a 2 yr goodmans in a bedroom and RGB works fine on it :)

I fear that, as you say the picture rolls whether PAL60 or NTSC, I suspect your TV won't lock up to the frame or line frequency required from an NTSC source. If true, I doubt that RGB will help any.

Choices:

1) New DVD player that will output TRUE PAL (625/50) from NTSC DVDs eg Dansai from Tesco (£99.49) and some others. Note that the image can look a little jerky where there is movement.

OR

2) New TV which can cope with either NTSC or PAL/525/60

OR

3) Standards converter - £300-£800 from Lektropacks. The cheap ones will also give a jerky result and will probably degrade sharpness as well.

2 will give the best result.
