View Full Version : Improving radio reception on my stereo...
I'm sat here at my desk in my bedroom and for as long as I've been here, I've had my stereo on the same desk as the TFT for my PC.
For some very odd reason the signal is very 'hissy' on FM when I'm listening to the radio. I've tried farting around with the aerial (Well.. the white cable that claims to be the aerial) and the only way I can really get it at a half decent signal is to somehow suspend it in mid air and stick it between the slats of my wardrobe door :|
Does anyone have any tips on improving my signal at all? Another thing is that when I move it around, it's a different quality of signal from when I'm holding it to when I'm in another part of the room!! Grrrr...

The hiss is just because the radio is not getting an adequate signal. Assumin the aerial is a single piece of wire, you should try and arrange it so that it runs vertically upwards if possible. If it is one of the T-shaped ones with a flat lead, then the arms of the T should be aligned up-down with the lead running horizontally away for some distance.
Assuming it is a single wire, another thing that may help, assuming that the stereo unit has some exposed metalwork at the back, is to cut a length of reasonably thick wire about 75cm in length, attach it to the chassis of the stereo and allow it to hang down behind the desk. The efficiency of these antennas is limited by the size of the unit to which they are attached, and the additional length of wire will form a resonant "counterpoise" for the antenna, which increases its efficiency.

Maybe connect up an external FM aerial?

That would be the ideal solution, but I was assuming that the unit didn't have an external antenna socket.

Not quite the same, but when I moved and my DAB radio stopped workings, just £3.00 down Maplin (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-10297371) got me a larger aerial...
I unscrewed the old one, screwed in the new one et voila! A working DAB radio...
Could be that your PC is causing the interference, used to have Radio and PC in same room at opposite ends mind you, signal on FM was great soon as PC turned on was unlistenable.
