It's my aim to do a brief summary of the Oscar results for each year plus a link to the reviews for the films we have done at DVD Times. I'll gradually add to this thread when reviews are completed etc.

Any corrections/comments are welcome.

Please note, that for each year the Oscars the ceremony is for the year before's film. E.g. The ceremony held in 2000 was for Best Picture of 1999 and so on.

1999
Best Picture: - American Beauty (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=392&story=2403)
1999 was a massive foregone conclusion in terms of what was going to win Best Picture. American Beauty (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=392&story=2403) swept the board, winning most of the major Oscars (Best Picture, Actor, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography) other than Annette Bening losing Best Actress to Hilary Swank for Boys Don't Cry. However, Kevin Spacey shocked everyone by beating The Hurricane's Denzel Washington to Best Actor, considering Variety magazine claimed that Washington had won on the morning of the ceremony. Angelina Jolie received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region1/girlinterrupted.html), and Michael Caine won Best Supporting Actor for The Cider House Rules, beating favourite Haley Joel Osment for The Sixth Sense (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region2/sixthsense.html). Technically, The Matrix (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=347&story=2303) destroyed the opposition (including Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=307&story=2249)) and won four Oscars (Best Film Editing, Sound, Sound Effects Editing, Visual Effects). Other winners for various awards included Sleepy Hollow (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=463&story=223), Tarzan (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region2/tarzan.html) and Topsy-Turvy. Films nominated but losing their respective categories ranged from Being John Malkovich (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=425&story=2482), The Insider (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region1/insider.html), Magnolia (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region1/Magnolia.html) and Fight Club (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=153&story=1848).
