I've just bought a Sony DVPNS700 DVD player.

I am currently using a "scart" connection for picture and sound. Will I notice any significant difference if I were to invest in a new S-Video cable?

Many thanks.

Unfortunately, there's not an easy answer!

In order of quality (best first), video may be connected using:

1) Component (sometimes known as YUV).
2) RGB
3) Svideo
4) Composite
5) RF modulated (e.g. conventional aerial)

Scart is specified to carry Nos. 2, 3 and 4 - although some cheaper scart cables do not carry RGB. Also, not all TVs have RGB enabled scart sockets, and to add to the confusion, multi-scarted TVs usually only have RGB on 1 (occasionally 2) of them.

So, if your TV has an RGB enabled scart socket you will get the best quality by using a decent quality, fully wired scart cable and setting your player to output RGB.

Failing that, use a good quality scart or svideo cable.

Finally (and to add insult to injury), some TVs with RGB enabled scarts don't do it very well and svideo gives better results!

I have a similar question

My Toshiba has 3 SCART Sockets. AV1 is an RGB SCART socket, AV 2 and 3 are S-video SCART sockets. The TV also has an S-video input.

Is there any difference between using a direct S-video connection in comparison with S-video SCART?

I'd probably go for a good quality, dedicated svideo cable, although a decent scart will have a separate internal cable.

Neon,

Thanks for the advice. Like GAmbrose, I also have a Toshiba with 3 SCART Sockets (1 RGB). Just went into Richer Sounds and got myself a £40 scart cable!! Picture quality has signicantly improved
