Now for more Lord of the Rings DVD news. The Urban Cinephile website recently posted an online interview with Barrie M. Osborne, who is a producer on the DVD project. Here's an excerpt from the article which pertains to the eventual DVD release of "Fellowship of the Ring":

"As for the DVD, Osborne promises it will be released just before the second film is released theatrically, and it will have on it a longer cut. And at some point, he admits, the 9-hour version of the trilogy ˆ- all three films, end to end -- is also a distinct possibility."

We're also hearing that in addition to the longer cut, you can expect numerous deleted scenes, audio commentary and extensive behind-the-scenes material (all of which is arguably a given). The DVD will at least be a 2 disc (and probably a 3-disc) release. And, as you've probably already heard (in recent comments by New Line's president for worldwide distribution and marketing, Rolf Mittweg, on TheOneRing.net), the disc is expected to be released in August, and include an exclusive preview for the next installment, "The Two Towers".

Does the longer cut = more violence?. Heard a rumour somewhere.

I've heard that too - It's not official, but I think it's a given that a more adult friendly version will be released for the DVD audience...

Any word on whether or not it'll be DTS? Probably have to be put on 2 discs like Pearl Harbor, but would almost certainly be worth it.

I wonder if it will be an Infinifilm with it being a New Line release. Problem being though is that all Infinifilm releases are deliberately kept to 1 disc and this can't happen with LOTR because of the length - wonder what they will do?

I didn't know this. Do you know why it is?

gotta disagree there cheese dude.......theres nothing id hate more than having the magic killed by having to get up and change discs...if it takes separted dd + dts releases then so be it, but the last thing i would want would be the feature split across 2 discs...anyone else?

I agree. I bought the region 2 version of Pearl Harbour cause I didn't want to get up and change the disc over. Sadly this means I don't get a DTS version but thems the choices.
I've got Ben Hur and you have to change the disc on that and it's a pain.
Perhaps they should do different versions of the film, one with DTS and the other with DD, as in Jurassic Park, at least then you should be able to get the film on one disc.

I got Pearl Harbor R1 because I wanted the DTS soundtrack but was not looking forward to swapping disc's. But you what, I wasn't as fussed as I thought I would be. Maybe it was relief getting away from the dreadful film but it's not a big deal in my book. I would much rather have a DTS track and two disks than not at all and just DD. Although I agree there should be two versions so you have a choice.

Not over 2 discs FFS. Ruins it.
