View Full Version : Thresher - 40% off Wine + Champagne (TBC)
kneejerky_UK

I say TBC because it sounds too good to be true - but for a limited period you can get 40% off all wine and champagne. Apparently Thresher are trying viral marketing, so this deal isn't going to be advertised - you can only get the deal by downloading the coupon. The story is here (http://www.gapingvoid.com/Moveable_Type/archives/003466.html)
and here (http://stormhoek.com/)
And the coupon is here (http://www.stormhoek.com/webcoupon123.pdf)
The deal lasts from 30th November-10th December. I'm certainly going to try it.

thanks - looks good - but is it pukka ? Anyone used it yet ?
Just sounds like the guy could have made it himself (not difficult) - then seeing how far it will spread round the country ...
Mark.
It's got scam written all over it, that's not to say I'll happily take advantage if I'm wrong, though!
Dave.
hmm i have one about 30 seconds away from me, im sort of friends with them in there, so might test it to see if its true or at least ask rather than get barred for attempted fraud?
Also dont forget that it cant be used with there buy two get one free offer so 3 x bottles @ £10 each would cost £20 with out voucher and with voucher it would be £18 for x3 so not a super deal compared to normally whats on offer
Just thought id point that out

Hmm...anyone tried it yet?
Bottles will still be quite expensive as they're normally about £6 for a bottle that'd cost £3 elsewhere, Tesco are doing JP Chenet (& mateus?) for £3 a bottle a the moment for example!

Can someone go in and check this out, I need some wine!
In the small print on the voucher:
4. Discount is available between 30th November and 10th December 2006 inclusive on branch held stock only.
So we have to wait until the 30th to try it out!
Seems pretty legitimate to me, excludes all items that would be too expensive to reduce, such as spirits and already discounted items.
I have a store almost opposite my house so will be down to check it out on Thursday.

Definately legit, I used this a few weeks ago, didn't even think to mention it here :brickwall
They have made it better now though as I when I used it you had to buy a minimum of 6 bottles, made it one hell of a bargain though!
As i said its not that much of a bargain as when you use the voucher you are not allowed the normal deal of buy 2 get the 3rd free so as a easier example...........
Non Voucher Price
Normally get 3 x bottles of champagne @ £100ea = £300 - £100 (free one) = £200
Voucher Price
3 x bottles of champagne @ £100ea = £300 - 40% = £180
By the time you take in to fact they are "normally" much more expensive that most other offys its not that much cheaper at all...
If anyone sees any thing worth the voucher use in there then post here! As they may have some thing at a good price that when used with the voucher becomes a legendry billy bargain
Of course its a good deal if you have no other places around you......but remember the buy 2 get 3rd free offer is void with this voucher.
Thats not to say i wont use the voucher lol:D
Thanks for heads up to the op
well... I intend to keep this little beuty in my wallet since I often only have the option of threshers for late night booze buying... this will save me a few bob.
thanks op!!

We got sent this last week as a 'partnership' offer through our work and it seems like the exact same offer, so i guess it's totally genuine.

This is a legit offer...I work in Threshers and this is meant to be a business to business offer...don't think we'll be checking them that rigorously to be honest ;)
Hi. I work for one of Thresher's business partners. We've been sent an email containing a very similar voucher. Our voucher actually says it's a business partner voucher in big letters on the voucher. The one on the link doesn't mention business partners.
Interesting.
Oh wait! I don't think this is the Business Partner Promotion. The voucher we've got is significantly different.
Our voucher entitles us to 40% off AND can be used in conjunction with the 3 for 2 offer.
We also have to fill in our company name on the voucher.

That's impressive considering the voucher isn't valid until 30th November! :suspect:

You didn't need a voucher, there were huge signs in the store and the total was deducted automatically at the till.
So was that for 40% off for 3 for 2? Or both?

Just 40% off.
Cheers
Chris
Has anyone tried the voucher today?
A reputable individual from a forum site I shall not name has actually rung Thresher and confirmed that this is a genuine offer.
I've been emailed it by people about 400 times now. Will try it out this weekend I think...
Has been on the 5Live this evening - the vouchers were sent out to suppliers to be used and passed onto friends and family.
They're now absolutely inundated, the websites crashed and are apparently entering some sort of crisis talks to figure out what to do!
So it's not really a viral campaign, but if it were, it'd be a very successful one!
The Krug champagne I bought was reduced to £60 from £100 a bottle using the voucher!!! Bargain!

Is any champagne worth that much ?
good bargain though :)
Will be searching for decent reds myself.
thanks to OP.

From the BBC:
Web discount frenzy at Threshers

The voucher was intended for suppliers and friends only
Off-licence chain Threshers is braced for an onslaught of bargain-hunting drinkers as an online discount voucher is downloaded by millions of people.

this is definetly legit i phoned our local victoria wine and they confirmed it was fine.
Definitely legit...
See story below and comment from Threshers man saying they will honour it
Threshers off-licence chain was today braced for a rush of customers after a 40% discount offer intended for limited distribution was widely circulated via email.

All prices in Threshers will be going up 40% this weekend then....
Yep, just got back from my local Victoria Wine/Haddows. Asked at the counter first and the woman said she had just been talking about it. Saved me £29 off a £70 spend. Including Chatuea Neuf De Pape for £9!

aha - so it's accepted at Victoria Wine then? Our nearest Threshers is in Edinburgh, but if it's accepted at Victoria wine, then I could be in for a bargainous weekend of xmas booze buying!
yes mate Victoria Wine in Peebles accepts it so I assume they all will.

It really does get my goat when these sorts of vouchers end up on eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-5826355). Bloody wasters.

Just made the 6 o' clock BBC One News. Nice bit of prime-time free advertising!

I think this is one big "con" advert ... I mean on the news.bbc.co.uk - that Treshers may just make a profit on this one .. but touch and go ... I mean come on - when you use words like that - its just bound to draw people in - and in reality its only about 8% less than normal.
all in all - a VERY clever marketing campaign ....
It is all one big marketing campaign and a very successful one at that. Vouchers have to be completed with a person's details when they are used so Threshers can collect names to be used for future mailings. It also encourages a lot of new people to visit a Thresher store for the first time, not to mention the free advertising from the BBC.

They have a good marketing department. The really don't want people to know about it do they, thats why they put their top staff up for interview to keep it quiete...
Not sure if its been posted, but martin lewis (he says so in his podcast) called them and said can i use this voucher and give the link on my email which goes to 800k people and they said yes no probs. They know what theyre doing and it's all planned, they know a 40% discount code is going to do the rounds, and must know to put some terms on it. It's being deliberately playing the victim saying oh noes it was only meant for suppliers, and know that people will think 'screw you threshers' and they will win in the end!

Better deal is on at Tesco at the moment I reckon, lots of wines & champagne @ 50% off, buy 6 bottles (min) and get a further 25% off
On bbc news today they did a comparison off Thresher prices after 40% discount against supermarket prices and even with the discount the prices were only about the same as the supermarket prices so not really a great deal.

Put your backside away - It's a good offer for goods sake. Not everyone wants 3thousand botles of wine :cuckoo:
I wanted a single bottle of champagne for a party tomorrow night. it was just over a tenner with the offer....i'm happy with the deal.
Hate to upset you but I don't feel conned

I don't doubt its a relatively good deal - just doubting all the guff about "its taken us by surprise how many people know about this offer" - "we're not sure if we can cope with the demand" etc etc
It's only worth it if your going for quality wine i would say. My haddows had bottles of Chateau Neuf De pape for the same price as the supermarket (£15ish), brought down to under a tenner with the discount. Same for the bottle of champers i got, same price as the supermarket but with the discount. basically i got 10 bottles at £4 each, but there's some pretty damn good wines in there. So i'm happy overall.

What like Babycham or Archers and Lemonade?
Hmmm thresher site is down and the coupon doesn't work too!
Wonder if they have been inundated with alkys?

Exactly right - this is just an extension of their 3-for-2 offer they've been running for months, and they have higher initial prices than other stores to compensate. Hats off to them for the frenzy that's built up - wish I was a shareholder!
try buying a bottle of Dom Perignon anywhere else for even near to £60 ! Of course its a good advertising strategy but there are also some very good buys there too.

well I don't see any reason why not. It's basically been amended to allow all person to use it (apart from under 18's), unlike the one doing the rounds last year which was only meant to be used by other corporate partners.
The T&C's state.

Mods can I post or mail the voucher?
Why don't you email us instead as we don't read every single post on the forums.
That would have meant searching out email addresses!
At the bottom of every page there is a "contact us" link.
And we would probably have said no anyway :D
Why don't you email us instead as we don't read every single post on the forums.
Really? It must be the "non-affiliated links detector" that has you guys swarming all over such posts within 3 seconds of them being posted then ;)

No Champagne though by the looks of things Are you sure, it says "SAVE 40% ON WINE AND CHAMPAGNE" on the offer page.
The thing to remember about this 'offer' again is that Thresher are permanently '3 for 2', which means everyone 'saves' 33.3% every day of the year. This 'offer' doesn't take 40% away from the '3 for 2' price you'd pay, it takes 40% from the full bottle price.
Now, obviously, Thresher bump their prices up a fair bit to take account of the permanent 3 for 2 deal. Don't go shopping at Thresher blindly believing you are going to be making a massive saving - you may still find what you want cheaper in a supermarket. If there are deals on at supermarkets, such as the recent 25% off at Tesco, it is unlikely to be cheaper at Thresher other than for the odd bottle here and there.
