View Full Version : upscaling dvd player advice
Hi guys
I'm looking to buy an christmas present and think a dvd player with HDMI upscaling abilities would be a nice gift, I read on the forums about the sammy hd860, is this recommended or is there another on the market that's better?
thanks

toshiba sd360e 69.99 from Play.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=20047&a=60823&g=606309) and its multi region just about the best.
i've got Sony HXD860 not long ago, this in case you wanna have a recorder in the same box, great upscaler.(280-300 quid), Used Sony DVP-NS76H before, was happy with it as well, great reviews all over the net.(~80 quid)
Good luck
What outputs does the Tosh sd360e have in terms of 5:1 ?
Just got a Denon 1730, have only tried Star Wars ROTS at the moment, and the picture on my 42PX60 connected via HDMI was outstanding :D

Not if you want to use it for it's Divx capability too, because then it's the worst.
I made the mistake of buying a Tosh with Divx 'capability'. After a couple of months I noticed that it was struggling to play newer Divx files to the point that some wouldn't even play.
Scoured the net only for a firmware update only to find that Toshiba don't do firmware updates.
So if you want a player that will be defunct Divx wise in a few months, then yes buy it.
In my opinion you cant do better than the Oppo, it's more expensive but worth the extra bit of cash.

Thanks for mentioning Divx. That kinda rules it out for me then.
Sorry for being dumb, but......what is Oppo?

A top quality player that gives a fantastic picture and handles everything you throw at it.

I've had mine a few months now and still not seen anything that betters it.

Agreed. I have the Oppo 971HD and it's simply awesome. It's also worth noting that Oppo's customer service and support are nothing short outstanding - hands down the best service I've ever received. Regular firmware updates too.
They are due to release the black coloured 981HD shortly, which is basically the same as the 971HD, but with HDMI, 1080p upscaling and SACD playback.
Thanks for all the replies.
I forgot to mention that it needs to be black....my sis hates anything Silver, didn't like the mini hi-fi I got her, well didn't not like it, would just have "preferred" black....and if it comes with a blue display then thats definately a winner..(her other love is Blue LED's) deckings got em, stairs got em, lounge light has them.....anal i know...but that's her for you.
cheers

The Oppo is silver but if she like blue LEDs she's onto a winner with it.
The LCD display on it is blue, the tray open/close button lights up blue, the power switch is a blue LED.
Thankfully though (for people like me who dont want their whole room lit up by blue LEDs from their DVD player) you can switch them all off in the players menu.

That Oppo 971HD looks like a very good player, was thinking of buying an upscalling player buts was waiting till I found a decent 1080p panel. What's the going rate for a 971HD?

The only place in the UK (as far as I know) that stocks them is http://www.crtprojectors.co.uk/
You can't order them online but a quick simple 1 min phonecall to some very nice people and it will be in the post to you.
Looking at http://www.crtprojectors.co.uk/dvd_players.htm it seems £165 delivered is still the price. You get a dvi to dvi and a dvi to hdmi cable included.
If you want Black with a blue LED display then the Cambidge Audio 86 is the one to go for. Available from Richer Sounds for £119.99. Got one myself a few weeks ago and the picture is great.
However, it has started to not read some discs for whatever reason. Hopefully I'm just unlucky and have a dodgy one but there won't be a problem getting a replacement when I get a chance to take it back.
It doesn't come with an HDMI cable but if you ask them instore if they'll do a deal then they'll probably knock a few quid off one for you.

Isn't this the wrong forum? There are a few threads already discussing this in Home Cinema.

Lost more Oppo info in this thread: Oppo 971 Questions / Advice (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=413527).
I'm another very satisfied customer.
am interested in the oppo 970 and i see that you can buy it direct from the US from the oppo site for $157 delivered to the uk ( about £80 according to xe.com )...do you think i'll get stung by customs and if so will it still be chaeper than getting it from crt projecters uk site ?
cheers

The 971 is better for PAL usage though, something to do with the 970 not having 2:2 pull down for PAL.
For an extra £20 you can play your R2 discs with the 971.
