Specs are available on www.medion.co.uk now! Click on the shop and alick on the banner on the top left. Looks fairly good! I suppose it depends on the price now!

Price is £549.99 but no signs of free upgrade to Vista just a comment about it being 'Vista Ready' so it is ready for a potential upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium in the future.
Maybe move to the Bargain forum as it is available from Sunday?

If it doesn't come with the free Vista upgrade, does this still represent good value for money at £550?

I read that also when it was first announced but if you look on this flyer then read the bit in red at the bottom. Nowhere on it at all can I see where it says free upgrade.

How does Vista differ from Windows XP Home?

Is this PC good value for money at £550?

I'm thinking of getting this on the weekend. I recently bought the LCD from woolworths that has HDMI so with a HDMI connection on the PC is it a case of connecting HDMI > HDMI ?

wardmj1
29-11-2006, 14:41
Should be that easy warney!
Im also thinking of getting one of these! Have had my current Medion for over 4 years with no issues at all so this would be a nice upgrade!

Is this a good pc for (online) gaming? Are the Intel Duo processors as good as the AMD equivalent?

nice one, I wasn't sure if the hdmi to hdmi lead would carry audio and video so that's great. Sold !!!

I'm surprised at the lack of interest on this PC. Any computer bods out there have any opinions on this deal ?

MarkR

I have been reading around and the real PC buffs are saying that the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E6300 is crap compared to the E6600. However from what they are saying to put that in would bump up the price so maybe they have done that on purpose to keep the PC affordable to many?
I will certainly trying to get one on Sunday as my last Medion is on it's last legs. :(

warney
30-11-2006, 11:33
I believe the 6600 takes the price up by over £200 so not even considering the 6600 ! I think this will do me fine for broadband !!

... my last Medion is on it's last legs. :(Which one did you get, MarkR?

I'm sure that I got mine in Spring 2002. It's the blue one with a Pentium 4 chip - 2Ghz, 256 ram, and row of video connections and USBs (inc Firewire) under the drop-down door on the front. It was either £699 or £799 for the base unit.

It seems to be working OK, but I know that it won't last forever. I mainly use it for the internet. I'd like to upgrade the USBs, though. It takes an age to transfer stuff at the moment.

You probably got the MD8000 in the november of 2002. Thats what I have and I think it is time to upgrade.

MarkR
30-11-2006, 13:47
Yes I have the one with the connections under the flap on the front and I think it was the 1st one they offered with a DVD writer.

Edit: My main reason for replacing is a year ago the power supply blew and wiped out the motherboard with it. Ever since then it has never been the same in terms of performance and reliability. It was the last 1 before they brought out the 3 year warranty also I believe.

If you guys are thinking about upgrades, an upgrade for mine must be long overdue.

I got mine at the same time. It finally gave up the ghost last week. (I must have contracted the win32.aldi.md8000 "time to buy another Medion PC from Aldi" virus). Not bad, 4 years on mostly 24 hours a day, used as the main gaming PC in the family and as a file and print server. I did upgrade the memory to 3/4 of a Gig and added a DVD burner. The original had a CD burner and a DVD reader.

I will be in the queue with my son an hour before they open. Last time I think it was a Thursday.

MarkR
01-12-2006, 09:15
Yes they have been Thursdays before as they only started doing the Sunday offers a few months ago. I remember having to queue and then turning up to work late and having to make the time up.

Any opinions on the graphics card.

I have not heard of a 7650 before.

Would it be better than a 7600gt

I am now not convinced this is a great deal Dell (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=702&a=60823&g=19472) are doing a 2.13 Core 2 Duo with 2gb RAM and a 19" TFT for £645 or so delivered.

I can not find it, all I can find is:
Dimension 9200 as above without monitor and only 1GB memory, 250GB HDD and ATI X1300 Pro Graphics card (about half the speed of the 9650 GS £629.00.

---EDIT---
OK, I have tried to make the Dell PC as close as possible to the Aldi.
CPU is next speed up, memory is 2GB not 1Gb, slower graphics card (ATI X1300).

Total price £869 inc. delivery and VAT.

It is said to be in between the 7600GS and 7600GT.

The 1 thing that seals the deal for me with Aldi over Dell is they are really good any refunding if not happy. Also this has a 3 year warranty and software. I know people can get software from all over the place but you also get a free Vista upgrade.

I'm a bit err...drunk so hopefully that code works...Pity it is only XP Home though as it limits your Vista free upgrade to Home Basic or something.

You get Bluetooth desktop set free too although it looks very ugly!

*personally* I dont think this stacks up very favourably to recent Dell Dual core desktops - several around for less than 500gbp WITH a 17 or 19" panel too... IIRC, Dell had an Amd dual core for around 550gbp too (yum), again incl. a panel...

Of recent they have excluded PCs from their money back policy and will only refund if there is a fault. Even then you have to get a returns number from Medion before they will process a refund. It's usually marked on the box these days. Nearly fell foul with the Xmas PC last year but luckily managed to get my money back. The graphics cards appear to one of special for medion and don't always seem to take kindly to the standard driver updates from Nvidia.

Still a good deal even more so with it coming with MCE 2005 and the upgrade to Vista.

with the spec I would think so. The one I got last year was Pentium D 2.8Ghz with a Nvidia 6600 graphics which ran very hot when playing HD stuff and also struggled when the bit rates got too high. This seems a much higher spec and also uses MCE rather than just PowerCinema that the latter used.

thanks for that, I may go and have a look tomorrow if they have any left

Well I am well happy with mine and especially with how quiet it is. Would be perfect in terms of using it as a media centre as so quiet. Also has quite a neat plug in option on the top so if you had bought the external HDD they were selling today then you can literally plug that into the top.
Pressed what seems to be the standby button earlier on and couldn't get it to come back to life so had to witch it off properly.

If it's anything like the previous model. I think that's the Linux Media button. You can only use that when the system is off. It will boot into a Linux powered Meda Centre app.

Very happy with ours.

Had to disable the Bullguard Firewall as I could not get any online games working (Battlefield 2142 and Call of Duty 2). Tried opening the required TCP and UDP Ports but got nowhere. I will look at it another day, pressure from my son made me give up.
