Is the 620 amp for abot £400 as good as the write-ups seem to think it is or can you get better for cheaper? It needs to be powerful, I like the volume up

It is pretty good - but at 400 notes, it's £100 or more overpriced - try Richer Sounds.

IMO, the Marantz SR5200 receiver, at £360 is a better buy.
It boasts a radio tuner, Prologic2 and 6.1 capability, all of which are absent from the Yamaha DSPAX620 amp.
Oh, and it's supposed to sound better too!

I've just looked at the Richer web site and it is £289 so how did you manage to get it for £250?

I have recently ordered the 620 RDS from LEConcepts for £329 inc.
Delivery is £10.
Back in stock 16 Jan. Can't wait for delivery!!

The reviews rate the Maranz better for Stereo but the Yamaha better for multi-channel. I ordered the silver model. I would have ordered the Maranz but the styling is awful and I don't think I would use DPLII.

And Silver and £50 less than your site.

Justin,
What could you have offered this Rx for albeit in Black?

I bought the Yamaha DSP-AX620 from Richer Sounds for £299 and I'm well and truly impressed/happy with it.

Dixons have it for £399 so Richer's price is a bargain compared to that.

It's picked up a few awards this year too.

How good is it at playing music cds? The write-ups say its not very good but would an ordinary bod know it's not?

And only 1 year warranty and not touched by yamaha UK service if it goes wrong :) Nor would I price-Match a import, especially when its not in stock :) Sorry to disagree with you, but does it really matter what it looks like? Its what the gear sounds like that makes the difference, and the Marantz 5200 is far superior for stereo even if you don`t use the extra power, pro-Logic 2 or DTS-ES surround modes. Remember the Yamaha is only 5.1 DTS/DD, the Marantz is 6.1 ready.
