View Full Version : Seagate 320gb External Hard Drive £79.99
Just seen this advertised on the telly.
Seagate 320gb External Hard Drive (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=1078&a=60823&g=19560&url=http://www.pcworld.co.uk/product.php?sku=240892)
Anyone had any experience of a Seagate hard drive? I'm looking to use this as a backup to my Maxtor hard drive, which I intend to store my entire CD collection on.
Seagate drives are good. The RMA is open to argument. Should be 5 on internal, 1 on external in the usa, 2 in the eu, although we seem to be exempt on that depending on the supplier. So maybe 1 or 2 yr
I got a bit lost. Might be worth buying a caddy and just buying a disk elsewhere. That's what I've just done. 5 years!
Seagate the best you can buy ;)

If it helps anyone, they're the same price at Currys (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=1469&a=60823&g=13819&url=http://www.currys.co.uk/product.php?sku=240892)
Can you remove the internal hard drive enclosed within this for use in a device such as the Freecom Media Player?
As I need a large capacity, silent IDE hard drive and considering you get the enclosure with this it is as cheap as buying a bare drive!
Thanks for the Currys tip, I've just bought the last one from the Torquay store. Wish I hadn't missed the Staples NAS deal though.

Tried asking your store if they have any in the back/will order you one in?
I thought I had got their last Netgear VOIP routers but went back the other week (to pick up a NAS ironically!) and found they had put some more out.

Off to get one of these later, anyone got any impressions for me before I take the plunge?
Many thanks,
Spoony.

This drive ships with FAT32 formatting. If you're using 2000/XP then you might want to format the drive to NTFS before you start using it, particularly if you work with files over 4GB :)

Thats as simple to do as plug it in, and right click on the drive to format is it m8?

Not quite, but it's pretty straightforward:

Thanks for that, it`s formatting as we speak.
Quiet little thing too.
Shame it hasn`t got auto-off but there you go.

Got mine today too - very nice, re-formatted.
Anyone thinking they'll get 320Gb of storage space - remember, that's advertised, not actual - you'll get 298Gb formatted as NTFS.
Sounds about right, I've got a 320Gb WD in this PC and its 298.08GB :)

I'm not complaining, just people might be expecting to actually get what it says on the box, as opposed to the age-old tradition of rounding errors.

Nice spot OP - couldn't get stock in any of my local Currys stores but managed to reserve one slightly further away at a PC World store
Thanks OP, picked one up from PC World this morning.

Yeah that caught me out big time. Filled it with loads and then realised it was FAT32
A couple of questions as I bought one of these at PC World yesterday after seeing the advert in a paper. I have transferred some files to it and then read this forum.
Can I format to clear the drive and then reformat to NTFS?
The instructions specify that only a USB port at the rear of the computer should be used nd not one at the front. Any reason for this?
Bagged one! Cheers to the op!
I formatted the drive to NTFS using the front USB ports with no probs at all.
Cheers

So it doesn't get knocked out mid format? Can't think of any other reason.

If you've got a bunch of stuff on there already just use the 'convert' command at a DOS Prompt to change the filesystem from FAT32 to NTFS:
CONVERT driveletter /FS:NTFS

This worked really well for me by the way, 100gig used, 200 to go
a chap at a lan party I went to at the weekend had one of these, he filled it up and went and got another one (which he then also filled up). Looked pretty good and quite fast as well.

can you put programs on external HD's? I've bought one and its just filled with data at the moment but wondered if it was possible to put games on there.

It acts the same as an internal drive so yes you can.
Thanks for the heads up, just ordered one of these from currys who are doing free delivery at the moment

Yeah noticed that too Spoony - bit of a pain not having the off switch on the front or an auto-off function but for £79 you can't complain too much I guess :)

It does seem to put itself into standby mode after a while though, which is better than nothing.
Wow! Curry's near Chancery Lane had a full shelf of these one day. I thought I'd come in the next day and buy one but found that they had all been sold out!

Your profile says you're in Edinburgh - there are at least two that you could get the bus to from the centre of town?!
heheh! Currys restocked today. There were only two left and I got one!!!
Whoohoo! Can't wait to get home, now.
Thanks all.
Just keep checking your stores as they seem to have been restocking (Since the deal has been advertised on National TV so they should be!)

How reliable is this external hard drive ?
How reliable is this external hard drive ?
seagate is the bestest apparently.
Only problem I've had with mine is that sometimes windows doesn't let me disconnect it because some process or something is still using it.
unplug it? That's what I always do with mine. Is that bad?

If you do that, there is a chance that any files you have copied over to it during that session will be corrupted. Happened to me a few times when I copied some files onto a USB memory stick. Disconnect the stick without going through the correct procedure and try to bring up the files on another PC, and the files were corrupted.
Oh, never had that happen after literally a couple of hundred occasions!

I used to do that, too. Then it happened to me once...
I'll go with the hot swap method, it's only personal stuff and unmounting removable disks is a pain imo.
"To remove a USB device, just unplug it. That's it! Well, unless that device is a disk drive of sorts. In that case, you must officially unmount the drive before you unplug it. Why bother? Because some program may be using the drive. If you yank out the drive while the computer is busy writing information to it, you lose not only the file being updated or created, but also possibly other information on the drive. Therefore, you should always be sure that you properly unmount the drive. Here's how:"

I literallt watch the files moe onto it so not a chance of that happening
Our local Currys in Dover had one of these drives on the shelf the other day. Incredibly, they also had the 160gb model for the same price directly below! Not really that surprised to be honest!

The link you provided also says the following:
Keep these pointers in mind as you mess around with a USB:
Always properly remove your USB disk drives!
USB disk drives include those flash memory drives, such as jump drives or keychain USB disk drives. Digital camera media cards are also included in the lot.
Plug any external disk drives on your PC into the UPS. That way, Windows doesn't complain when the power goes out and the external disk drive suddenly becomes unavailable.

Pick one up earlier. Thanks.
Personally, if you can be bothered waiting for it to be delivered, the Amazon.co.uk (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://astore.amazon.co.uk/thedvdforums-21) Western Digital 320gb MyBook is only £82.99 delivered now which is slightly more stylish than the Seagate!
