View Full Version : Windows Vista Business Bargain - £93.94
Not sure if this is a bargain or not. www.aria.co.uk are offering a free upgrade voucher if you buy XP Professional from them from today. Just go to the site and search for VISTA.
Description below:
Don't hold out! Purchase Windows XP Professional edition after now and recieve a FREE* upgrade voucher for Microsoft's latest and long awaited Windows Vista Business Edition.
To claim your Vista upgrade, you must supply your Voucher, COA (Licence Number), and Proof of Purchase... Please retain your Aria Invoice!
Upgrade may require a reinstallation which will not carry over settings, data, or applications. Microsoft strongly recommend that users back up all data before performing the upgrade to Vista.
*Subject to shipping and handling fee from Microsoft. Upgrade available from 30th January 2007.
I thought Microsoft did this as a matter of course for Windows purchases so close to the release of the next version? Could be wrong....
Maybe I didn't explain. At the moment, Vista Business Edition is pre-ordering for £254.99 on Amazon.co.uk . Seemed a bit of a billy bargain to be able to get it for less than £100 with the voucher scheme. Someone please correct me if I have missed something.

The difference is that the Amazon product is a full box product you can install on any machine, old or new.
The Aria link is an OEM version of XP Pro. The licensing on this states that officially this can only be installed on a new machine or if you "upgrade" an internal component of your machine when you purchase the copy of XP Pro.
There will also be an OEM version of Vista which will be cheaper and presumably will have the same licensing terms as the current OEM Win XP.
Of course buying more RAM or a new Internal Drive and a copy of OEM will satisfy the licensing terms.

Nope if you buy XP today and even a "Vista Ready" PC you will still need to buy Vista, some but not all are throwing it in though.
While Pro is the best XP, Business won't be the best Vista. For most people it will be Home Premium.
I can't think of anyone who'd actually need Ultimate.

as posted previously on the MSE forums ...

Where do you get this information.
BTW according to the Aria site, if you get XP MCE, then that gives you a free upgrade to Vista Home Premium, and this is cheaper than WinXP Pro.
And finally, what hardware qualifies as an associated purchase when buying Windows XP OEM software?

It has changed a few times since the inception of the OEM program. At t the moment you can buy OEM with a new machine or any internal upgrade component if you are a system builder,. At the end of the day anyone who upgrades their own machine is a system builder. This only applies to Desktop OS OEM products. For server and office OEM licensing you have to buy it with a band new fully built machine.

I have 2 fairly new dell machines (desktop & Laptop both XP MCE. Does anyone know if I would need to install the purchased OEM version of XP over my dell XP installs in order to upgrade??
Is there anyway to install one copy on both??

i agree - but it also sucks that people in the private sector get better pay :|
I wonder if this is an indication of the OEM pricing for Vista once it comes out? It's a tough call as to whether to buy the XP media centre edition at £75 now to get the free upgrade, or whether to just wait it out until release date. The 64 bit edition doesn't seem to be available as an option yet - I have read that it may well be OEM only.
Hmmm just read that home premium will not include RDP. Looks like I'll have to hope VNC works on Vista.
shteve: Personally wouldn't touch the 64bit version for a few years yet (well for home use anyway), seems compatibility isn't hugely better than XP 64-bit: apparently hardware support is pretty good, but software support not - too many titles use 16-bit installers or similar, which prevent installation.
Magicboy: According to Laptops Direct shipping+handling fee is £7.50.
Bluchrome: Does anyone know if I would need to install the purchased OEM version of XP over my dell XP installs in order to upgrade??
I don't think it will be necessary. After-all the best way to install any new Windows version is to wipe the machine and install from scratch. All previous Windows versions have allowed this by simply requesting you inserting the media from the prior version while installing for it to check.
Is there anyway to install one copy on both??Don't be stupid! Its one copy per PC, as per Windows licensing has always been. If you want two Vista installs you'll need to buy two OEMs with free Vista upgrades (or wait for official Vista OEMs).

I realise this is a slightly old thread, but thought I'd use it as the offer is still available....sometime early next year I'll need another copy of Windows, but would it be worth buying the Media Centre version now (about £72) so I can get a free upgrade to Vista Home Premium when it's released, or do you think Vista will be about the same price as this when it comes out?

Yes I reckon it will be about the same price (OEM XP is £60-70) but more importantly why go to the effort and time of reinstalling Windows twice? You may as well now wait and go straight with Vista.
You're going to have to wipe and reinstall either way. I wouldn't want to do it twice.

Just read this on the ebuyer site.
Q. Is this a "Cheap" way of obtaining Microsoft Vista.
A. No ... This product must be pre-install by the System Builder onto the fully assembled PC before the unit ships to the end user. The end user must use the reciept of his fully assembled pre installed PC to claim the upgrade and only original forms supplied by an authorised system builder will be accepted.
Loioks like MS might have cottoned on to what peoiple are doing:(
