Got one of these from my local Staples (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-10408836).

Damn good price as it's UPNP and it is easily turned into the current model (Shared Storage Plus) with a simple Firmware update (takes 3 mins).

The latest management software has built-in backup S/W too.

Oh yes, and if you want to you can use the OpenMSS firmware and run a web server on it among lots of other things.

They also had the 200gb version for £69.91.

Any chance you could pick the 200gb one up for me?

Hi bought 1 of these a while back for £99.91 (300GB version) then saw the week after they had gone down to £89.91 so went back and bought two and returned the £99.91 one!

The product code is 5390404002522 for the 300GB one.

Does the UPNP mean I can use it to stream music to my creative wireless music?

Can't remember the model off the top of my head but will check when I get in. Looking at linksys's site its discontinued.

TBH having looked around it gets terrible reviews and i'm tempted to take it back before I've even opened it. It doesn't support WPA either by the looks of it so won't work on my setup. :(

Yes

Just plug in the USB printer to the back of the NAS, then install the drivers on the required computers (I don't think you can install the drivers to the NAS so they get copied across automatically but I haven't played around with it much yet) and then just browse the network for the printer

No, you need to connect it to a network port. But to be honest you're better buying something such as the external USB Seagate 320gb if you want to just connect it to one computer.

More annoyingly though I have today found that the drive is just constantly thrashing away as though it's being accessed even though no one else is on the network. Even re-booting it doesn't seem to stop it. Any one else had, or heard, of this happening?

It doesn't exactly thrash, but I can hear it accessing the disk in someway constantly when it is on. Not as bothersome as the fan noise - I may roll the firmware back as others have done

This might be of use to anyone who has just bought one:

On some Maxtor Shared Storage drives, the default subfolders created in the Public folder do not have the correct permissions set.

To fix this permission issue, delete the subfolders under the Public folder (i.e. Our Documents) and re-create them. You should no longer receive the "Access Denied" error when copying to the Public folder.

It was driving me mad why I couldn't use the 'public' area!!!

I think this is to do with the Media Server. If I disable this it's fairly quiet yet when enabled there loads of disk access. I could understand it if it was just whilst it scanned for media when you initially enable the server but once it's complete I would have expected it to be fairly calm until it's accessed.

Might give up and try and return it as it's driving me mad because the reason I bought it was with a view to getting a Showcentre 200 or similar.

Xbox 1 for XBMC - it needs to either be chipped or softmodded to install it.

Already using a 200Gb one and they work great, use mine to share my mp3's and utils around the network & will probably stream divx's to the MCE later. Updated both to v2.6.2 but not noticed the noisy fans on either. But my machine's not that quiet so it probably just drowns them out.

Not got an iPod so don't use itunes really except for having a look at it the other day. There's a util called "itunes library updater" ILU which is supposed to let you point it a different sources. Tried it and pointed it at the drive, it did start adding them but crashed part way through. Think itunes is just buggy on mine as its crashed in normal use as well. Worth a look

Just plugged in my new 200gb. Works fine although the firmware is only v1.2.0.

Should I bother upgrading to v2.6.2 which is available at maxtor here:
http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.8db0c3d6932ced37294198b091346068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FSoftware+Downloads%2FView+By+Category%2FNetwork+Storage%2FMaxtor+Shared+Storage+Family

If I do there doesn't appear to be a way to export the current v1.2.0 firmware so I could downgrade afterwards...

Theres a link in this thread somewhere to the maxtor ftp site, theres a v1.2.2 on there. I downloaded it just in case :)

Celeborn, I may have one of these for you. I managed to get the 200gb one for £69.91 but haven't opened it as I have not fully decided if I really need it. I will decide in the next few hours. If I don't need it, it is pretty heavy, so it may cost me quite for postage and packaging - how how does £85 sound (via bank transfer)?

Again, if anyone can grab me one of these (200 or 300gb) I would be much obliged. I would of course, cover all costs and contribute some beer tokens for your efforts.:)

Don't think I can do bank transfers mate - tend to be a bit expensive, I think the last one was £15-25 :(

They are free?

I have decided to let it go. As it looks as though Celeborn won't do a bank transfer, are there any other takers for £85? gunner are you interested?

Three and a half years and only two post counts that's got to be some kinda record LOL.

Think this needs to go in the General Classified Adverts Forum now as this thread and forum is just for the posting of bargains.

Could I suggest you take it back to the store you got it from and then post which store so someone could pick it up for the price of £45.00 or there abouts (10% off for returned stock)?

Thanks for the advice ramtec. I returned it at the Staples in South Harrow, Middx. Not sure if it is still there though - the guy behind the counter seemed to be taking a lot of interest in it!

Ramtec any chance you could let me know where to get one at that price. Obviously if there is a limited number then only fair to leave it to Gunner.

Try Stockton branch, they had one reserved for me today (300GB) but I went and picked one off the shelf, asking for the other one to be released. They also had at least one 200GB out too and said they had more of both in stock.

So are you guys all going for the MAxtor model? Anyone know if there's any left at the Staples Corner branch?

Nipped in my local staples again today and got a Netgear WG511T PCMCIA 108mbs wireless card for my laptop - £9.91.

£18+ everywhere on line. Another bargain!

One other thought about the Maxtor SHared Storage NAS. Would it be possible to swap the disk inside it as 200gb is not reallt big enough. Would it recognise any old IDE HD?

You can add extra storage using the USB ports located on the back of the unit

Good point - although USB drives are read only when connected to the NAS unit though...

Went in to Staples in Preston today & they had three 200Gb Maxtors on the shelf, I bought one so two left. I had asked them a week or so ago & they told me they had all gone so these must be new stock. Better be quick if you want one. Price was £49.91 for 200Gb.

Got one from Derby (Meteor) Centre a couple of days ago for £69.91, got it home, no power supply so took it back for a refund....

Then realised I could probably get a power supply, went back yesterday to pick it up, managed to get it for £55.00. - Result !!!

Manages to pick up a 200Gb from Watford for just shy of £50... bargain...

.. until I had to go back once because they put the wrong drive in the box and then again because when I returned the first time noone had a clue what I was talking about :brickwall.

Still, seems like an awesome bit of kit :D

I am using the Pinnacle Showcentre 200 with my Maxtor Shared NAS Drive and it works perfectly at streaming almost all video files, mp3 and photos direct to the telly, and also supports Hi Def output too!

Don't use my Divx DVD player at all these days.

How have you got this working?

My pinnacle 200 briefly found the MSS when I first bought it, then disappeared!
Tried most firmware on the MSS, which says media is enabled (should I be able to see a list of files?)
Can run from PC fine, but really want to store vids on MSS drive, so PC doesn't need to be on.

I think you'll still need the PC on as it runs the media manager software. The showcenter talks to that to see what's available and it told to look to drive X to find the file. At least, that's how I understand it.
I'd love to be wrong though.

It's been a long time since i set it up but i am sure that as long as uPnP is enabled on the Pinnacle and drive has the media server enabled the Drive will show up as a server. The media needs to be stored in whatever shared folder you are using.

Apparently the two use different standards. Pinnacle media servers have a poor implementation of the standard or so it seems.

but it works for some.
given up and now looking to install wizd on it and let the mss function as a proper media server.
