View Full Version : Delay on sound through speakers vs TV

I hope someone can help because this is driving me nuts.

I have my DVD player linked through both the TV and through a regular stereo amp (which is mostly used for music). It's connected via regular stereo outputs into the amp as there's no digital input. To the TV it's linked via RGB SCART.

The sound through the amp/speakers has a slight but noticeable delay on the sound, which throws out the lip-syncing in a big way. Through the TV the sound and pictures match perfectly.

It's very frustrating as there's nothing I can do about it, or so it seems. Is there anything I can do? The DVD player is actually a PS2 but it has all the latest drivers and therefore doesn't suffer inherently from any lip-syncing problems: as I said, when played through the TV it's fine.

Check to see if the amp has an option to set speaker distance to correct the delay.

It doesn't, I'm afraid. It's a proper hi-fi amp made by Naim rather than an AV amp. As a result, it sounds superb but is *very* low on features (for that hi-fi purity of sound!) It doesn't even have tone controls.

Would the length of the cable make any difference? I've just realised I'm using 2 metre phono cables to connect it up. Or am I clutching at straws here?

im not sure that its anything to worry about dude - i know that mine manifests this problem, where any source is slightly delayed when listening through my sony amp compared to directly through the tv - thing is i have to have them both turned up at the same time, hearing an "echo" of sorts to notice its there at all....are you sure you can tell its delayed just by listening to the amp? because i think this is commonplace.......

I get the echo effect if i have my HC speakers and TV on and the same time. No Lip sync problem when only on HC speakers though. You sure this sint what your getting?....

You're right - there is a slight echo if I have them both on at the same time. But if I have just the hi-fi speakers then the lip-syncing is noticeable: more on some disks than others but definitely there.

Damn, this sounds like a common problem. Maybe my system is more susceptible to it than others or maybe I just notice it more. Either way, I'm going to have to stop using my stereo to listen to my DVDs which is a great shame!!

This is a longshot but have you tried putting the inputs from the DVD into the CD inputs of the amp. Most high quality hifi amps have a direct CD input which has no processing on at all so that might solve the problem.

Also have you tried a different DVD player as it may be the DVD player that is the problem and not the amp.

If none of this works try contacting Niam as they might have a soultion.
