I will be purchasing a flat screen TV within the next year or so and was wondering if I should invest in one of these to put it on:

Or would just a normal wooden one like Argos or Ikea sell suffice? I ask because I already have one of these:

and they are meant to improve the sound due to the spikes and the frame etc but is it essential for a TV?

Thanks.

I use a coffee table with a shelf underneath, works well for me, plus looks more asthetically pleasing and in keeping with the house (pleases the mrs).

Not at all and if you're talking about it improving the sound of the speakers on a TV it won't.

However, as with speaker stands, the spikes do have the advantage of digging into the carpet so will stop the stand moving around more than flat bottomed legs.

I would just choose your stand according to looks, size, maximum tolerated weight, and capacity (to hold any of your other AV equipment). If you have a stand you're already happy with, then so long as it can take the weight, may as well stick with it.

BTW, the two links in your post are the same.
