So this is to all the BlackBerry users out there..can a blackberry phone be used on a pay as you go sim and still run the email/net wi-fi features?

AFAIK the answer is no, I think you need a dataplan to use a BB.

Yep, you need to pay RIM for BB mail, so you have to have a contact as the only way to pay RIM is via a carrier.

So if u bought a sim free blackberry what exactly do you need for it to work? ive never grasped this?
