Help!!

I have recently purchased an Panasonic DMR E20EBS standalone DVD recorder and need to pick someone's brain. I'm very new to all this dvd copying lark and to this forum. But from what I've seen so far, I should have an answer in no time.

So if you have the time to spare, here's my question: when recording to an DVDr, does it matter what recording mode the system is in (ie. XP/SP/LP/EP) to be played back on another standalone DVD player.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

ps. If anyone's interested the quality is great and if you have a macro free dvd player it copies like a dream. :brickwall

This has been reviewed in 'What Video & TV',and 'Home Cinema Choice'.It is not on the website yet,so if you cannot find the magazine,i can scan the review, and email it to you.the standard you choose,xp/ep,etc relates to the bitrate level of recording, and is nothing to do with compatibility with playback on dvd players.Theoretically DVD-R standard will play on most players, but it is very hit/miss.It will not play on a Toshiba 100 for instance.XP wil give you 1 hour of recording, the next standard,2 hours, etc.

Thank you very much for that Napoleon, you have been a great help and have taken a weight of my mind. For a second there I was worried I couldn't get any movie over 2 hours on to a disk.

Off out now to buy a copy of 'What Video & TV'.

Once again, thanks.

Just to clarify something. It is not in this months magazines. Both 'What Video & TV/Home Cinema Choice reviewed it in their December 2001 issue. You can order back issues,or i can remove them(as i don't need the reviews) and send them to you.Let me know.

Once the DVD-R disc has been finalised neither the on screen menu nor the front panel display even show which recording mode was used.
Just out of interest have you tried Memorex DVD-R media ?. For some reason my machine wont take them. No problem using
Verbatim or Infiniti though.

Keoma

I have only just purchased my DMR and hace opted for the cheap option. I have brought some Mirror unbranded 4.7 DVD-R disks for £4.09 each from www.valuemedia.co.uk

I'm going to try one out tonight, I'll write back tomorrow and let you know the outcome.

Fingers crossed!!

FYI the Infiniti's I mainly use are only £3.75 here www.121cdr.co.uk

The unbranded ones they have also don't work with my machine
but, apparently, that's nothing unusual.

Thanks for the address Keoma, I'll be sure to give them a try.

Copied my first DVD last night, qualilty was fantastic in LP mode. Then my Samsung decided to freeze (typical), I then finalised the disc, placed it in my 709 and it laughed and spat it back out.

Any ideas? Could it be the cheap nasty disc, or could it be the Samsung 709?

Any help would be appreciated.

More than likely the 709.
DVD-R will not play in all machines. I have a Pioneer 717 that plays DVD-R and DVD+RW fine. I also have an Arcam DV88
that will not play DVD-R without all kinds of skipping, pausing etc
but will play DVD+RW.
Looks like you'll have get yourself a new player..... after you've tested that it likes DVD-R.
