Surely the best remote for the money (Hope so as I've just ordered one :D )
Has anyone got one of these?

It's excellent. I use it with my plasma tv, Humax PVR, Oppo DVD/Divx player, Marrantz surround amp and Teac Mini hifi. Worth spending the time to set it all up, and takes some playing around with to get it how you like it but it's really useful. Very rarely have to dig out one of the other remotes.
yeah, I've got one and i think its great. Dead easy to program. its all done through a web based interface. You add devices and then create activities using a number of the devices. So for watch tv, it'll ask questions like:
What input does your tv need to on.
Which device controls volumes
and so on.
Device is a bit cheapy feeling (buttons are a bit spongy) but I honestly couldn't live without mine. buy one!

It's brilliant. Not much else to say!

Awesome mate. I've got the "nighmare" setup of Panasonic plasma, which this remote hates. Spoke to friendly people in Canada about 4 times, freefone of course, and they programmed everything for me like a dream. Couldn't be without mine now, which sounds daft, but I had 5 remotes and with the kids at least one was always lost.
Just have a glance at the official website (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/detailsharmony/GB/EN,CRID=2084,CONTENTID=10929&ad=emea_harmony_chart_525) and you'll be salivating at the prospect. I know I am. ;)

Just ordered one as a backup in case my aging Pronto ever bites the dust...
Has any use one of these and a Pronto? How do they compare?
I have, never really on with the pronto as I missed the lack of tactility (is that a word) that proper buttons give you. I think this is much better - unless you really need the customised layouts I guess.
Can this thing control all the functionality of the Sky+ box, ie moving around the planner, recording, series links etc. and is it as easy as logging on and setting up on the PC????
Harmony remotes are tremendous, Ive had remotes before but this is the only one Ive used that I dont need the original remotes still. Ive not picked up an original remote for over a year. It does eveything on the sky box you need it to and its rare that anything will flumox it.
As for backup to the pronto, set it up properly and see how well it works your setup and it will become the main remote for sure.
Only downside is it can take a while for the setup to click in your mind, so expect a fair few nights initially figuring it all out etc. So if your scared of techy things you may give up in frustration first. Well worth it in the end though.
Can you program Macro's into this.
Could I switch on my TV, Amp and Sky+ box and set the Amp to TV input with one button press?
EDIT - Reading the website makes it sound as they have something better than Macro so I have ordered one.
Thanks OP
Gone for one to replace my ageing Marantz RC1200 on which the buttons are beginning to wear.
Hope it proves to be at least as good ;)

these remotes are the only all in one remote where i do not touch my original remotes anymore.
Got our first Harmony remote about 2 yrs ago :luv:
Couldn't even consider going back to not using it :gag:
Have yet to own something it cannot control ... all the hifi/tv/dvd/sat/etc of course, but even the ceiling fans, wall dimmers, etc we have all work easy-peasy.
Had a Panasonic plasma for awhile with it, never had any problems controlling it or setting it up like jan08 mentions
Has anyone been able to actually get to the user manual for this remote using the logitech site? Thought it would be nice to have a bit of a pre-read so ready to go when it turns up but have spent 20 mins going round and round on the web site looking for the manual and cannot find it????

Nothing to read mate really ... just connect the usb cable from the remote to the PC, and then the config application does it all.
Go to the harmony/logitech site, and create a new account for yourself now, you can start preconfiguring now and seeing how the keymapping setup works and how it handles tasks (example to watch a dvd it would 'turn on tv, turn on amp, change amp to video2, change input to optical, turn on dvd, change tv input to scart3, etc')

They're great.
Agree with the earlier post mind, if you do have a Panasonic plasma you WILL need to contact their support line (talk to Canada, they'll eventually sort you out).
Macro commands become Activities, which work even better than you'd expect.
Finally got mine working last weekend, and it works like a dream.
The remote even passed the wife test!

How did they solve that prob as I have a similar sounds menu on my Tevion 40"?
As has been said you cant solve it perfectly without harmony support doing it for you. Thers loads of threads on the panny sets over at the avforums.
can you change the text on the one button operations?
eg play cd to play vcr ? etc
cheers
Whilst I'd like one of these (if they were not made from bendy plastic - have they improved the build in the last year?)
I'm still not convinced about how easy they are to use re custom buttons on standard remotes.
Like on a TV and a TV Drive controller, you have all the TV Guide and HD Recordings buttons.
I just don't yet understand how you get around the problem of "special custom" buttons on a handset being put on a universal controller.
Unless you have a LCD one with soft keys where you can make it look as you want (kinda thing)
========= EDIT ==========
Just to clarify.........
What I mean is.............
What are you supposed to do if there are functions on your REAL remote that have no "Obvious" button on the 525 to use?
kjmacphee
25-10-2006, 17:27
You use one of the 4 "soft" buttons around the LCD screen. Haven't found anything that the 525 couldn't learn from one of my existing remotes.
The remote does creak a little but it is in no way "bendy" and I have had no problems with it since I bought it regarding build quality.

I've currently got an original Pronto which is still serving me well, although it getting long in the tooth.
Is the Harmony comparable to flexibility that the Pronto gives with the allocation of multiple functions to one button?
The remote controls everything that your original one does through the Device button. The buttons are a bit creaky, but it has a good build quality imo.

thanks.
As long as the lights you buy has a remote then you can program the remote with the original remote commands. FWIW I have the varilight dimmers you can get from B&Q and they work fine.
I believe the wall plate unit was from the local leccy shop, but as Baz says just use the learn facility
I find myself, for example, picking up my TV remote to switch the TV on, then picking up the Freeview remote to select the TV channel, then picking up the DVDR remote to switch the DVDR on and enter a Videoplus code. With the Harmony, would it have modes for TV, Freeview and DVDR? How does one toggle it between those modes? (ie is toggling it between the modes more user-friendly than picking up the various remotes? Do you step through them or is there a short-cut way to each mode?). How are the Harmony keys labelled with their functions in each mode to remind me how I set it up? Or am I making completely wrong assumptions about how it works? :(
Harmony uses the concept of "tasks" ... In addition to the LCD window assignable buttons, they all have fixed buttons "watch a movie", "watch TV", "listen to music" ...
For example, when I press "watch a movie" it knows to turn on the tv, switch to the right tv input, turn on the dvd, turn on the av amp, select the right amp input and such, and dim the lights a bit. If I press "watch TV", it switches TV inputs, turns on the tivo, etc etc. If I press "listen to music" it turns on the amp, the tuner, the cd, etc etc ... besides just turning stuff on and off and switching inputs, you can also set it to send any keypress command for any device any number of times or chains of keypresses as needed as part of 'startup' for a given task. You can of course create your own tasks: we have "watch kitchen tv" so it controls the tivo and logitech z680 speakers out there seamlessly.
Yep its very clever as it remembers whats on and whats off, so if you switch activities it knows the TV is already on so doesn't send a command to turn it on, which would, as its already on, probably turn it off.
That means though that you cannot turn devices on or off using the original remote or on or of on the TV itself etc. Because the remote would think its on when you have turn it off manually. However as said you wont ever need to touch an original remote anyway, so pack them, up and put them in the attic.

It s not the panels thats the problem but the PV500 PV600 models etc. its where you have to press a colour button to get up a menu of inputs that it struggles with.
Just to try and clarify - The Panny plasmas work fine in device mode on the 525. The problems start when trying to use Activities on the 525, as it will inevitably have to change AV input. If you have a Panny plasma such as the PV500 you'll understand how overcomplicated and badly designed the AV input selection is.
Despite all of this the 525 can be programmed to fully utilise the Activities with these plasmas, but you do need their customer support. BTW, their customer support are the best I've ever spoken to.
They troubleshoot any problems, update your profile at their end, then you just log back into the Logitech software, and update your remote again with the new stuff they add at their end. The other good news is that providing your registered / logged on with the Logitech Harmony software, they always keep a back-up of all your devices / acitivites at their end.

Will this little baby work with the forthcoming Joytech XBox 360 Control Center thing?
A note of caution, although harmony remotes are a really good product and will control just about anything, my 688 is now 2 years old and the buttons have started to fail. The up direction has stopped totally, and the 0 is starting to fail. Harmony have confirmed this is hardware failure.
Also harmony/logitech have no repair centers in the whole of europe. If you wanted a repair, even under warrenty, you would have have to deal with the supplier or ship back to Canada!
This model at this price is still quite a bargain, but I would steer well away from the higher priced 885 + models.
Will this little baby work with the forthcoming Joytech XBox 360 Control Center thing?
Harmony have the original Joytech Conrol Center in their library so assume this one will appear also.
Even if they don't have a device in there you can grab the codes from the original remote and upload them.
Silly question maybe, but does anyone know if this will work with the Xbox 360. I only ask as they manufacture a 360 specific product and so am unsure if the 360 allows '3rd party' remotes to work?

Got the previous model (same/similar functionality but different design) when it was a bargain on here many months ago.
It took about 4/5 hours in total to get it working exactly how I wanted it but (a) I have never used any of the original 6 remotes (I had) since and (b) I have never had to make any changes to the Harmony since.
I used to have a Pronto but just couldn't get used to it's lack of "hard" buttons, replaced it with a Harmony and never looked back

Does your normal remote make the IR lights flash on and off? If not learn the command from the original remote.

Yes, it works fine with the Xbox 360 (so you can dump the media remote).
When I spoke to Logitech support last week they told me that they were a partner of Microsoft (I asked how quickly the HD-DVD remote codes would be available for the Harmony remotes- "very quickly").
Thanks for this...
Had mine delivered today and it's always been a pain in the ass using my fujitsu plasma/sky/amp/xbox/dvd remotes.
This has sorted them all out. All I've had to do that was a bit of a stretch was work out where to add the power on delay to my dvd player as it's plugged in to a smart plug and only gets power when the amp comes out of standby.
15 sec delay added and it's perfect. Now just have to convince the missus how good it really is.

You will get there in the end, just be patient its worth it.
Also try the troubleshooting as it has options in there that you cant access in other ways. RAW is in learn commands, custom.
Thanks Baz, going to have another bash at it now :)
EDIT- Have taught the remote the raw command for TV on/off both from the original remote and Sky+ remote and still the Logitech switches my IR light on and off and the TV and Sky remotes do NOT and NEVER have!
This is so odd, surely it cannot be truly learning the command then?
how do you start the test drive again without creating another new account

Not as versatile as the Pronto, but it took me a couple of hours to set up - as opposed to several months tweaking the Pronto!
The concept is great, but it would be nice if they had access to the One4All database so there weren't about 27 different "Sky+" devices to choose from!
My only other gripe is that in the "Test Drive" you can list all of the avaiable devices for a manufacturer - why can't you do that in the real setup - or have I missed something?
Overall a very solid 4/5
(It still won't wean the wife off the Sky+ remote though - that thing's just too well designed and no universal remote comes close)
Far superior for me personally compared to the Pronto - that thing nearly broke me after a few days. A quick thing like checking Teletext was just a nightmare. Already, despite only getting mine this morning, I can do the simple things so easily
I know this isn't related to the bargain but can anyone offer some quick advice as have looked round the FAQs on the website and can't find an answer on this one? I have all AV through my amp and everything works fine except that I would have expected when you use the volume up and down on the remote it knows that the Amp is the item you are trying to control even when device is selected as Sky or DVD but nope the vol can only be changed by selecting AV receiver first?????
Surely this is fixable as my wife is being driven nuts having to select av receiver then back to sky then back to av receiver etc.

nictry - if you have Watch Sky (PVR), Watch DVD etc activities set up then when you do the 'walkthrough' set up for each activity (you can do this again) the set up asks you what controls the volume (usually TV or amp) - change the setting to AMP for each activity and away you go.
Nictry - you need to create an activity which blends them together, when accessing devices directly there is no merging of functions from multiple devices so amp controls volume but play/skip/etc control DVD (for example).
Did you let it automatically setup the activities after adding all the devices ?
Cheers Guys, just on the phone to support and was a problem with the original delay settings on the amp and they have fixed it so all cool now!

Yep, fab piece of kit and now my wife is very happy too, they guy on support was a real star and also sorted out some of the button mappings for sky too, if only all companies provided that level of after sales support on the products they sell
Their service has always been brilliant IMO ...
We've got two different kinds (1x 688 and 2x655s) and a year ago they duped the account once I finished setup (so as to have one for the 655s and one for the 688).
About 3 mos later they emailed me back saying best not to have two separate configs to have to keep updated, and showed me how to use the new software to use one account to properly update more than one harmony remote even if with different button placements
Now that's follow-up service

The Harmony is intended to used in Activity mode- device mode is just for access to the "extra" keys. If you use Activity mode and you've told the setup you listen to Sky with your amp it'll work fine - if it doesn't just customise the activity and change the key actions.

Mine arrived this morning and I'm VERY pleased with it (just wish I'd got it for £8 cheaper :( )
One thing that's worth mentioning is DON'T use the software that came with the control. You are much better off with the Web-based stuff at http://members.harmonyremote.com
It's a nicer interface and it's a lot easier to remove the buttons that you don't want etc.
It's taken a couple of hours to configure my remote 100% correctly (had to alter the TV power delay for input selecting and my Media Player isn't in their database) but it's now working like a charm.
Great product, blows my 2nd generation kameleon 6-in-1 out of the water.
The web-based is ok (if you didn't have to keep telling the security that its ok) but you could/should download the new version 7.0.2 from the website isn't of using the version 5 from the CD-ROM. (Although that probably updates itself too)

Did you ever manage to suss out this problem? My Lights do the same thing !!

Can the title of this thread be changed to reflect the new price £59+ quid?
Any therefore, surely its no longer a bargain?

Can anyone suggest a remote control lightswitch that will work with this? Oh and make it cheap please, no dimming required!!!
Any switch with a remote will do. I have the varilight ones from B & Q which work well.
Available for £44.85 from here.

Yeah I wondered this too as seems to do it some times but not others??
It seems to happen if you leave it for an hour or more, so you've just picked it up after watching a movie in the dark and it lights up so can readjust yourself to the buttons.... or something like that.

Yes it has a motion sensor but it only gets activated when the remote has been idle for 2 hours. If you move it after this time the backlight will turn on.

That would explain it then
Anyone know if this will control the Telewest TV box and whether it will help setting up a Wii (dolby, TV on correct channel etc?)
Works with my Telewest box fine. As long as the tv is supported, you can program it to do pretty much anything your existing remote can do.
the support guys for these remotes are superb, I've used kameleons and oneforall remotes in the past but these are in a different league.
had problems getting the remote to switch to the correct input on the panny tv and the wizards were a bit rubbish, not listing half the inputs, gave logitech a bell described my setup and kit and they got it working flawlessly. they edit the raw xml data and can configure it to do pretty much anything. don't spend ages trying to hack it yourself if you're struggling just give the support line a bell (evenings best as you'll probably get patched through to canada.)

Was thinking og getting the 885, has anyone compared the two? Is it worth the extra to get the 885 or is the 525 acceptable?
Just got my 525, nice remote, much better than the cheapy i`d been using, set up was easy, loads of support even for my Technosonic pvr101 (which I was pleasantly supprised to see)
Got one problem though, when pressing up channel it jumps 2 channels instead of 1, this happens with the cursor buttons also.
Anybody had this problem and solved it?
Nick

You need to go into troubleshooting on that device, and it comes up with a list of problems, your looking for something like "my device reacts too much to commands" select that and you can lower the level down a bit until it works correctly.
Sorry about the vagueness but Im sure you'll find it.
Well Done Baz
I found it OK, works fine now

I had the 885 for a while, but didn't like it so the went for an older model and love it.
The main problem I found with the 885 was though it looks lovely, the buttons are very similar, so it's very difficult to use without actually looking at the thing. With the other harmonys, you can usually let your thumb do the walking.
Do you know how the warranty works? In a event of a claim, would you need a store receipt?
Interested in picking up one and seen a few quite cheap (£40quid) one's on eBay that are listed as brand new.
Make handling the 7 remotes I have at the moment, a lot easier!
