Noticed lots of Japanese dvds from e.g www.dddhouse.com
are meant to be R3, yet some are all region. Also got R4 Pulp fiction, yet wont play on my multiregion dvd player, even though it is meant to be R4, pop it into my pc dvd(set to R2) and it plays
Are R4 dvds multiregion, if so why dont they play on my player?
any advise would be great:nuts:

A lot of R4's are dual encoded to work on both R2 and R4 as they are both PAL .R0 means it isn't region encoded therefore will work on any region.

You'll fid that DDDHouse only stock HK & Taiwanese DVDs Buffy.
The Japanese titles are probably HK dvds of Japanese films, hence the R3 or R0 encoding.
Japan is under R2, so proper japanese discs will be either R2 or R0.
Most HK discs are actually R0, but people refer to some of the R0 HK titles as R3 so that you know what country the disc is from.

The Australian <i>Pulp Fiction</i> that I own and reviewed (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/reviews/other/pulpfictionr4.html) is definitely R4 only - it wouldn't play in a DVD-ROM drive set to R2.
Discs tend to be dual-encoded R2 and R4 if the distributor owns the rights to both regions (or at the very least UK/Ireland and Australa/New Zealand). This isn't the case with <i>Pulp Fiction</i>, which is a Buena Vista release in the UK and a Roadshow release in Australia. Universal Australia is another R4-only label. Discs from the BBC, Fox, Paramount, Columbia and so on are usuall R2/R4 dual-encoded.
On the other hand, most discs released by independent Australian labels are R0.
As for the Kubrick box set, as it's a major-studio release it will be R4 in Australia - whether it will be R2 as well will depend on who the distributor is. Michael D's site (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au) has revewed many of the Kubrick discs, so it may be worth checking the region codes there.

thanks for that site, according to the site it says pulp fiction is region 4, yet why does it load up on my pc dvd, while R4 jackie brown does not, and why does PF not work on my dvd player?
My pulp fiction seems to be 2 regions?
according to the site kubrick collection is R4 and R2, does that mean it wont work, as it is by far the cheapest place to get it(£57 compared to R2 £100)
Is it normal for players not to play 2 region dvds?
Should i take the risk and get the aussie kubrick collection, as pulp fiction might be a one off?

Pulp Fiction is R2/4 compatible. Hence it will play on any R2 machine. Jackie Brown is R4 only. Hence it won't play on R2 machines - unless it is modified.

No. It means it should work on both R2 and R4 players without any need to have the machine made region free.

Yes. All machines are region coded. You need to either input a code to make them all-region or have it chipped. The exceptions are when discs are released with dual encoding, as most R2/4 discs are. If you see a disc with info relating to playing in Australia it means that that disc will play on an R4 machine and vice versa.
Strictly speaking there is no region 0. It just seems to be a phrase that come into popular use for region free.
