View Full Version : Tried to get cheaper upgrade, but Orange didn't care and let me cancel
This might sound stupid but I actually got what I asked for straight away no fuss when I rung up orange.
Went to upgrade my phone to a w810i and downgrade my tariff (from £25 to £19 a month) instore today and they told me that it would cost £79.99 for that upgrade. I explained that it was free on a new £19 a month contract but they told me that didn't matter. So I decided to ring up orange and they gave me the same £79.99 offer so I told them its not worth it if i can cancel and either go somewhere else or open a new account and get it for free so the girl put me through to Disconnections. He had a quick look at my account and said he could do it for £14.99 (i think), told him it still wouldnt be worth my while as I could get it for free so he said ok and cancelled my contract for me. I was expecting them to try a little harder to keep me to be honest!
I'm tempted to phone up again and try and get the same £14.99 offer to save the hassle of going on to pay as you go next month and then having to go back onto contract again, especially as i've just remembered that when I originally set up my contact with them last year my first bill was for a month and a half or two months worth of use because I was a week from it being a new month or something (can't remember the details to be honest). Not sure what to do really?
14.99, is not bad considering you keep the same number and avoid the hassle of leaving/rejoining.
So is your contract cancelled now? Doubt you can do anything else now, Just phone them up and see what they say.
After 10 years of bills over £100 per month they also recently let me cancel, they just didnt do a good enough tariff for my use
My contract is cancelled from the 30th November he said, but i''m being sent something in the post to confirm it I think. Will phone later if i get the chance and see if I can get that same offer again although I think it will be unlikely as I can hardly threaten to cancel again!

Orange just don't care about the fact you can get better deals cheaper elsewhere.
I'll be chancing my luck with Vodafone in the next couple of weeks.
I'm paying £50pm for Anytime 350 with Stop the Clock with the added £25 extras pack (For the 500 texts) totalling £75. Seeing as new customers can get the same for about £35-40 all inc. they better do a good deal seeing as I've been paying £75 for the last 16 months or so.
£75 for 350 mins and 500 texts? Wow.

You definately want to have a look about changing provider.Ask for your pac code in the final month of your contract.
It's only because at the time of taking out the contract, that's what was on offer... Trust me, I'll be requesting the pac code if they don't get my monthly bill down to at least £40.

Another one here as well. Phoned yesterday amd said I wanted to cancel and can I have my PAC code and got "Ok that will be with you in a couple of days"
I am not bothered at all as I was leaving no matter what. I have suffered from poor network coverage when some one else with the same phone on O2 has full coverage. Not even out in the sticks.
No concern from the girl at Orange as to why I was leaving.

Ask to be put through to the retentions team! Just be polite and straight forward. Tell them what you have at the moment. Tell them what you can get on offer from other places/ or a new customer. Ask them what they can do to match/beat that offer. I think a lot of it has to do with the way you talk to them.

Good advice. I got a good deal doing just that last year. Having said that I;m off to T-Mobile in December as their data tariffs are unbeatable at the moment
I was definitely very nice about it all, just said to them its not really worth my while paying for an upgrade if I could just cancel and start a new contract (with orange, not even another company) straight away and have it for free. Anyway decided I couldn't be bothered to try and un-cancel in the end, theres no phone that im really desperate to have anyway so will just go to pay as you go for now and keep an eye out for good deals.

That's true! Orange need to work on their data tariffs.
On my last upgrade (about a month and a half ago) They gave me the SPV M3100 for £19.99 which was going for more than £100 at the time IIRC maybe £150ish. 500 minutes, 100 text, 1000mb data free for the first 3 months and free insurance for the year (worth £60 by itself). All for £25 per month.
Be polite and it will work wonders. The retentions team are the only people that can give you the offers. Speaking to the normal customer service reps won't get you much at all! :)
the key is to be nice i find... i hinted at a cancellation but then just skirted the subject and just sweet talked the woman for a while, made the most of chit chatter and then it was easy... 200 xnet day time mins, 1000 xnet off peak mins, 1000 texts for £25 a month... my bill is rarely over £30.
Had a similar experience with them last month. Called to upgrade and they wouldn't give me a good deal so asked for my PAC code and they gave it without hesitation. Shame really as I've been with them for 5 years and each year they've always given me good upgrade deals but this time they didn't seem to care. I'm now off to O2 as there as some good cashback deals on mobileshop.com.
Just wanted to echo what others have said; after 5 years of orange - the last year with 2 phones - I called orange to cancel with absolutely no protest from them.
I asked if that was it, was there nothing he could do to hold my custom - and he said, you're already on a great deal! Absolute ******** - £30 for 200mins (thankfully I get cashbacks). I queried whether this was the 'retentions' department, and he said it was! All he said he'd offer me was an animal package off the shelf - to which I said, surely that's no better than sales. He said nothing.
I remained polite and unpresumptious, but I'm absolutely disgusted about their entirely disinterested attitude and riseable effort at 'retention'.
I don't like to get het up about this, but my disconnection cannot come soon enough.
I had exactly the same problem last time I wanted to upgrade. they wouldn't even let me change my contract to a different ( more expensive ) tarrif. Im currently on one with 3000 texts and 0 mins. I wanted to swap to one with less texts and more mins. I was told if I want more mins I would either have to cancel the contract and get a new one ( losing my number in return ) or just bolt on some minuites!.
all in all im really not happy with them at the moment. my next upgrade is due in a few months and I think i'll just cancel anyways.

I think the only way around this problem would be to force networks to accept any PAC code - even those from the same network (in other words you'd be able to take your number to a new customer contract on the same network) - they'd soon offer existing customers better deals. Come on ofcom...

Job done.
Reduced to £30 pm for 500 X-Net minutes & 500 texts with a free Nokia E61 (that I'm trying to sell) thrown in.
Update!
My PAC code ran out, so I called to get another.
This time, the chap I spoke to was really helpful, and said there were allsorts of things he could offer me!
So I've ended up with 900 xnet anytime mins, unlimited texts, free K800i, free insurance throughout the contract, £95credit - for £35p/m
Quite pleased with all this, and saves the hassle of changing network - why they couldn't have done this the first time around, I've no idea!
