This is a bit vague but here goes . . .

It's set in the future and it's about this boy who is genetically engineered to become a pilot of some kind, spends most of his childhood in a room full of gadgets, has a female robot that helps raise him. Eventually he goes off with this female robot (who I think can transform into a space scooter that he can ride) has an adventure and ends up finding some kind of space bird/phoenix thing.

The animated film must be at least 10-15 years old.

Any ideas?:(

That's definitely Space Firebird. I've still got a copy on vhs somewhere which i surprisingly found in HMV a while back. I think it's over 20 years old - came out in the late 70s.

Thank you Julesc, you are a superstar.

I watched it a few times when I was a kid and seem to remember getting quite cut up over certain scenes.

Now to find a site that has it for sale.:D

Yup - Space Firebird it is. A classic if ever there was one. If my memory serves me right, this was made by Osamu Tezuka - The God Of Manga, and pays homage to the Fleischer brothers. Worth seraching out.
