View Full Version : Recommend some Foreign films??
After watching 2 very different kinds of films Amelie & La Haine recently, it's made me aware that there are some excellent foriegn films out there. I admit the idea of subtitled films didn't really appeal to me, but seeing these 2 has opened up some new ideas for films. The only problem is which ones? If they are French R2 they must have English Subtitles as my French is poor.
Merci :)
"The girl on the bridge"
great R2 dvd (£9.99 at play)
with Vanessa Paradis & Daniel Auteuil
Play review:
A girl on a bridge is preparing to take her own life. Adele (Vanessa Paradis) looks determined to jump but a passing stranger offers her an alternative ending. Gabor (Daniel Auteil) is a circus act on the search for a new assistant but is this where all knife-throwers like him find their new targets or is this just love at first sight?
Adele takes a gamble on fate and enters Gabor's strange but exciting world. As a double act they breathe life into each other and rediscover good fortune. With Gabor's skill and Adele's stunning looks they take their act to the edge and are soon thrilling audiences across Europe.
Adele is in debt to Gabor for her new confidence in life and is sure it will help her find Mr Right. However, the moment they are apart, luck deserts them and it is only now that they truly realise the effect they had on each other.
This is a unique, enchanting romantic comedy that leaves a lasting impression.
Cinema Paradiso - Directors Cut. Still going cheap in the Streets Online/MVC sale I think.

Good choice Richie - I loved that film.
Also try the 3 Colour trilogy, Delicatessen, Diva & Baise Moi for 4(or is that 6) very different Euro movies. There are of course hundreds or thousands of others.

This is impossible question to answer.
May i suggest subscribing to Film four.
At the moment they are showing a lot of classic foriegn films... Jean du floriete, Manon du sourse,The 3 colours trilogy, Seven Samurai, Dolce vita...
( I can't spell in English so God knows how my attempts at French and Italian come out. )

Crikey Geek, you're opening a can of worms moving into Foriegn Language films!! It's a veritable minefield of great (& *****) films!!
Here's some that I enjoyed immensely:
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Mandarin)
Delicatessen (French, same director as Amelie)
Rififi (French heist film)
Deep Red (Italian)
Suspiria (Italian)
Shiri (Korean)
Tesis (Spanish)
The Vanishing, AKA: Sporloos (Dutch & French)
Chungking Express (HK/Cantonese)
Ashes of Time (HK/Cantonese)
In The Mood For Love (HK/Cantonese)
The Road home (Chinese/Mandarin)
Nikita (French)
Some Japanese recommendations:
Seven Samurai
Throne Of Blood
Yojimbo
Violent Cop
Sonatine
Hana Bi
Audition
Ring
Graveyard Of the Fireflies
Do you like martial arts & action films?? If so I could reel off a lot more HK films!! ;) There's a link in my sig that'll take you to a list of HK film recommendations.
How about:
Das Boot - Probably the best war movie ever (German)
City of Lost Children - Same director as Amelie (French)
Run Lola Run - (German)
Some more:
All About My Mother (Pedro Almodovar)
The Killer, Hard Boiled (John Woo)
Battle Royale
Most HKL releases :D
A CHINESE GHOST STORY (mandarin)
THE EMPEROR & THE ASSASSIN (mandarin)(got one for sale btw ;) )
LE COLONEL CHABERT (french)
BEAUMARCHAIS (french)
RIDICULE (french)
THE STARMAKER (italian)
Not sure about the availability of the latter four but no-one else seems to mention them in discussions like these.

Glad to see Delicatessen from Jeunet and Caro mentioned a few times. I saw it for the first time this week and I absolutely loved it. It might not be the most involving story ever but it's a series of memorable scenes.
I watched the French DVD release which is really worth its price. Great picture, good sound and a commentary by Jeunet that, judging from the first few minutes should be interesting. I wasn't overwhelmed by the few extras on disc 2 though and it lacks any subtitles.
I certainly hope UK gets a release of similar quality.
As for The Girl on the Bridge, I personally enjoyed it but some people have been put off by the story. Definitely a matter of taste.
2 of my own recommendations: If you enjoy comedies, check out the french DVD's of "Le diner de cons" and "Le placard". Both come with English subtitles (and le diner de cons with an awful English dub I don't recommend) and are really funny/entertaining movies.

Trainspotting.
Blinkende Lygter (Flashing Lantans)
A Danish film that I enjoyed very much.
And only 99 kroner (£8.25) with free delivery at
www.dvdoo.co.uk (http://www.dvdoo.co.uk).
Worth a look
You could try Cyrano de Bergerac but from what I understand none of the versions available are particularly good :( which is why I've held off buying it myself in the hope that a better version will be released one day (although by then DVD's probably won't exist...;) ).
Another vote for COTLC, don't know a soul that doesn't like it, I also loved The Girl on the Bridge but it seems to be one of those films that's very hit and miss to recommend! Vincent Cassell is a fab' actor so u may well enjoy some more of him - L'Appartement is one of my favourites ( the French reg 2 disc is better than ours - though ours is ok! ) another good one is Brotherhood of the Wolf ( not on dvd here yet ) or u could try Crimson Rivers ( excellent two disc ) Three Colours Trilogy - Blue is the closest thing to a perfect film I've ever seen but not everyone's cup of tea! ( all my friends barr one think it's pap  ) In the Mood for love is high on my wants list ( need to recover from christmas first! ) Hana-Bi is only £9.99 in HMV's sale ( another on my wanted list ) actually thus far the only 'foreign' film I've seen that I haven't liked is Alice et Martin - want to buy it off me?:D
Thanks everyone so far. There are quite a lot of titles i recognise amongst your recomendations.
I visited Amazon fr and have hit a block as my very limited French doesn't get me far on ordering. Is there any English text based sites that sell French DVD's.

Try www.dvdzone2.com All in English by default and good prices to boot.
Out of my 200 DVD's, about 150 must come from them and I can't complain about service there.
It's a Belgian site and they import a lot of French DVD's. One piece of advice though: If you do a search on a movie and you find both a French and Belgian version and don't know which one is better, usually go for the French one. A few Belgian versions have been disappointing.
That being said, 99% of the DVD's sold are identical and more and more often DVD Zone 2 gives you a choice for those where the Belgian one is slightly inferior.
You can certainly buy Girl on the bridge, In the mood for love, Le diner de cons, le Placard, L'appartement, ... there with confidence. I did. :)

I quite enjoyed Amateur (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0109093), a charming little film made by some people in the United States. That's quite a long way away.
Also, The Dish (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0205873) is an enjoyable Australian comedy.

If you need help with translation, try using Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com). Otherwise, you should find Amazon.fr has the same basic layout as Amazon.co.uk - if you have an account here or at Amazon.com, you can use the same login at Amazon.fr and they will have your details.
The Dish - I know this one has been mentioned, but in these days of gross-out comedies like American Pie 2 and the like, its nice to see a film as endearing as this. No sex, no violence, just a charming little comedy.
Battle Royale - Also mentioned- but if you DO like violence this will please. 42 school children on an island have to kill each other.
Requiem For A Dream - OK. Its not a foreign film per se- but it is a very good 'independent' film about the year of 4 people whose life revolves around drugs. All the performances in it are excellent.
The Dish is on R2 now, Battle Royale is out on January 21st on R2, and Requiem For A Dream is also out now on R2.
Hope this helps
:)
I would like to nominate Raise the Red Lantern. But I have not been able to find it availabe on DVD. Why not? We shold be told! It is crying out for Criterion treatment

There is (or at least was) an R0 DVD available in Hong Kong, but it has a non-anamorphic transfer and burnt-in Chinese and English subtitles (produced by Era). I too would love to see it on DVD but couldn't bring myself to buy one with burnt-in Chinese subs. :(
EDIT: A link for the above DVD if you're still interested: http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID.1364/qx/details.htm

Some suggestions from my collection:
Come and See, Russian, available on an excellent US disk. A harrowing story of Nazi occupation.
Les 400 coups, France, R2, Truffaut's first film on a great french disk. Lots of other good Truffaut disks available in france, too.
A bout de souffle, France, Godard's first film, stylish, fragmented with Jean Paul Belmondo being very cool, available in the uk.
Gonin, Japan, a violent heist movie much darker and harsher than Hollywood would allow - and Beat Takeshi turns up too; the Hong Kong disk of this may not be that great, but it's cheap.

The packaging only indicates Danish for the hard of hearing. However the disc has Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish, Icelantic and English subtitles. Phew, I knew I couldn't understand Danish.
Something is wrong with dvdoo's site as it's not normally this slow. I am sure they originally said it had English subtitles unless I was feeling very brave. Anyway the cover is certainly the same as the version I have and at 99kr it's a real bargain (GBP 8.25 ish). Rumour has it that these guys speak great English if you want to drop them a note.
Oh, ordering is fun! I think they ask for the 3 digit code on the signature slip on the credit card if that helps!

Very funny spanish comedies is "Torrente, el brazo tonto de la ley" and the sequel boxoffice hit "Torrente 2: Misión en Marbella", both released with english subs.
The french comedies "Le dîner de cons" (The Dinner Game) and "Les visiteurs" are also some of my favorites.

I think "Blinkende lygter" is the only danish release with english subs, but there is some danish movies released in other countries:
The big hit here in Denmark "I Kina spiser de hunde" is released in Germany ("In China essen sie Hunde") with german subs. It's written by Oscar winner Anders Thomas Jensen who also wrote/directed "Blinkende lygter". He was also co-wrote 2 "Dogme" movies: "Mifune" and "The King Is Alive". Mifune is released in region 1.
Other Dogme: "Festen" ("The Celebration") is out in many countries and "The Idiots" is released in UK.
I think "Pusher" is a very good movie, it's released in UK, the UK DVD you also can buy from DVDoo (99,- kroner).
Then there is the old master Carl Theodor Dreyer http://us.imdb.com/FName?Dreyer,+Carl+Theodor#dvd
Cowfeet: ...Thanks for the tips!...
I already have the (UK) DVD of Pusher (two thumbs and one toe up)... and - of course! - Dreier's Jeanne d'Arc masterpiece (two thumbs and all toes pointing skywards)...
...just the other night I happened to see Idioterne on local TV - frankly, once was more than enough, have no wish to own that movie...
...couldn't find any reference to the 'Dog-eating-Chinese' movie on the site of 'my' e-tailer for German DVDs... they do have Festen - but it's dubbed into German - no sale!...
...wonder why nobody ever mentions the excellent 1997 Finnish/Swedish/Norwegian/British thriller The Last Contract(Sista Kontraktet) directed by Kjell Sundvall - in Swedish and English, with English subs...
...nor have I seen any reference to Chris Menges' very fine The Lost Son starring Daniel Auteuil and Nastassja Kinski...
. . . ? ? . . .
Andrei Rublyov by Andrei Tarkovsky, the most impressive cinematic tour-de-force I've ever gaped at. Due for DVD release Jan 21. Mind you, you gotta have a taste for reeeelly slow and deliberate movies, turgid with austere poetry (I do) in order to enjoy that one.

"In China essen sie Hunde" is a "FSK 18" title, so I guess it's difficult to find in German online shops, but I found it here:

"Festen" is out with danish soundtrack and dutch subs:

...why, thank you! your tip just cost me 32,60 Euros dammit!...

Sorry Hendrik, then I should not mention Ole Bornedal's "Nattevagten" also with Kim Bodnia released i Region 1 ("Nightwatch" 1994).
Ole Bornedal and Thomas "Festen" Vinterberg is back this year with english spoken movies and international stars, I'm looking forward to see them both :)
...I got Nattevagten on tape some years ago - nice movie, made me jump out of my chair a few times... might get Bornedal's 1998 Hollywood remake with Ewan McGregor someday...
. . . . . .
How about M. Hulot's Holiday availlable from criterion.
The other films I would consider have all been mentioned already and many are available at good sales prices at the moment So I would again recommend: Cinema Paradiso, Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources and La Comunidad.
Raise the red lantern is excellent but does not seem to be available on DVD yet.
You might also consider Life is Beautiful starring oscar winner Roberto Benigni - not to everyones taste this one but easily obtainable.
The Postman (Il Postino) and Malena are due for release next week - fairly light and fluffy films but likeable in their own way.
I look forward to seeing some more suggestions from the rest of the forum members .....

Dobermann (http://www.topspins.net/dobermann.html) - French
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0096251) - Japanese (avoid the appalling sequel like the plague)
phlebas:And a comfy chair or a cushion - it's 185 min long! Top film though. Mmmm... I'm just finding out the version due for release on Jan 21 is the Reader's Digest shortened version what only runs 2½ hours. Methinks I'm going to have to cancel my preorder. That's odd. Amazon.co.uk and Blackstar have it listed as 185 min but Play have it down as 2 h 34 min. Do you have definitive information that it is actually the shorter version?
Three French Films:
La Haine
Taxi
Taxi2
phlebas: Do you have definitive information that it is actually the shorter version? Not really. I may even have inadvertently have got some wires crossed. I found out, however, from dear ole Michael's (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=431&story=) review of the Criterion release that the film was originally 205 minutes in length, and that the 185 minute one is actually the abridged version. Let's just hope Play has made a boo-boo with their 2 hrs 34 mins running length thing. No telling, though, is there?

I have two versions:
Criterion 205 mins
Ruscico 185 mins
(Both are NTSC)
The Criterion version claims to be the definitive director's cut, but i've also read that Tarkovsky said the shorter cut was his prefered version.
On the one hand, if the cuts were made by party censors, he wouldn't want to risk his career by criticising the cuts - so he might feel obliged to say he prefered the shorter version.
On the other hand, Tarkovsky's sister (on the Ruscico Solaris disk) said that he would often put in long scenes that he knew would be cut by censors, in order to distract them from the stuff he reallly wanted to get through. So the long version may just contain decoys that he never intended to be in the film!
Apparently the Ruscico has a superior picture (I havn't compared them myself yet)
phlebas & adamvbarker:
I've just checked my (cough, cough, hack) VHS copy of Andrei Rublev and it's the same length as what the BBFC passed back in '91, i.e. 174 minutes. PAL time shortening nicely accounted for, I believe.
I've a suspicion that --in the best of cases-- 174 minutes will be the actual running length of the Jan 21 R2 release.

I'd also recommend Cinema Paradiso, currently my favourite film ever :D. As well as MVC, Virgin have it for £9.99 or in their 3 for £27 if you're interested.
Cheers, Jason.
re: Andrei Rublev (in case anybody still has the least interest in the matter).
Play has (prompted by --ahem-- me) amended the running length of the Jan 21st release to 174 minutes. In other words, my preorder still stands. As a matter of fact I got so elated I ordered Solaris and The Goonies (but I won't receive the latter title until the end of March :( )

I'm still interested! Well done for giving Play the nudge - I'm impressed they respond to requests at all! I think i'll wait until it comes out and see how it compares to other versions out there. Having said that, it is sure to work out considerably cheaper than either the Ruscico or the Criterion version so it may win with me anyway.

Dancer in the dark, While it is an english speaking movie it's brilliant. Akira (does that count?) Its japanese but fantastic.
Another vote for Amores Perros as film of 2001 - superb, tightly structured movie that I still think about. Can't say many other 2001 releases managed that (although I've just got a copy of Together to watch, which I'm looking forward to).
Also, further recommendations for:
All About My Mother
The Killer (the best Woo movie I've seen)
The Interview (English-language Australian film)
Life is Beautiful (bit schmaltzy, but still enjoyed it)
Vagabond
Cyrano de Bergerac
Ring
The Decalogue
To be honest, I only started exploring foreign language films over the past 2-3 years, as DVD finally gave me access to many I wanted to see, so I appreciate all the recommendations people are offering too.

On top of those previously mentioned, you might like to take a look at Betty Blue (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0090563) (called 37.2 degrees le matin in the original French). More recently, I thought La Pianiste was an very good film, however it is quite unpleasant and uncomfortable viewing...
Along with many others here I would also recommend most of Luc Besson's French stuff (Leon is also great, but hardly foreign!) like Taxi/Nikita.
Someone also mentioned Todo sobre mi madre, which despite being a really bizarre film is strangely enjoyable and touching.
Oh, and Blackboards (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0246266) is worth seeing too. I'm not entirely sure what language it is though- the director is Iranian, so does that mean it is Arabic?

Hiya,
Would defo agree with Come & See amongst other, would also recommend (and maybe people have already):
Solaris (coming out soon)
The hairdressers husband (Patrice Leconte) (available now)
Nikita
City of lost children (available r1?)
Weekend (Godard)
A woman is a woman (Godard)
Merci la Vie
La Seperation
Ridicule (Patrice Leconte)
La Mepris (Godard)
anything by Cocteau
Nosferatu (Herzog) great dvd available now, best Dracula film I think.
most films by Bergman
The Killer
Alphaville (Godard)
There is also a film by the bloke who used to introduce films on bbc2, called something like "police cop"(???) and in Mexican I think - sure someone on here will remember!
A couple that are art house (or artsy fartsy as I like to call them) but not necessarily foreign or foreign language are:
Fun
Orlando
Suture
An Angel at my table http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/219722/id=8n0BC:TtMcH
I've put where I know they are on dvd, but most of these i doubt are (not familiar with non-region 2 availability yet) but at least you will notice when/if they do come out.
cheers

How about 'El Mariachi' It's a Spanish film, the first film that Robert Rodriguez directed, (he later went on to direct 'From Dusk till Dawn' and 'Desperado', stuff like that).
Not the best film, but excellent considering the budget, about $7,000 I think.
You can get it in a double pack with Desperado (it's sequel).
...or some real Spanish movies? (El Mariachi is in fact an American 'Indie' movie filmed in Mexico, in Mexican Spanish ;) )...

There is also a film by the bloke who used to introduce films on bbc2, called something like "police cop"(???) and in Mexican I think - sure someone on here will remember!
Alex Cox's Highway Patrolman set in Mexico, in (Mexican) Spanish. I saw it in the cinema and rather liked it.
Available R2, eg from Amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000058DG4/qid%3D1010620142/202-1000493-5075027)

Worth a look
Certainly is - got this and watched it last night on yours and several others' recommendation and loved it :). Great story and one of the better feel good movies I have seen for a long time. Took me back to my youth (don't ask ;)) and I am still thinking of it today.
