Excellent Choices are my R2 supplier of choice, excellent prices and decent customer support.

First question though, Why have you guys removed the cancel order option? It takes away a important function from your website? Can we have it back?

Also can you confirm that order 000D63FFE64D has been cancelled please, as I received no reply to my e-mail and your online order status just plain doesn't work anymore.

Thanks and welcome. :D

Baz,

Thank you very much indeed for your welcome and for your questions!

Both the cancel & order status functionality have been temporarily disabled whilst our new distribution facility in Jersey finds its feet. Both should be back and working as expected in the New Year.

I have also just confirmed with our Customer Services Dept. that your order has indeed been cancelled as requested. Apologies if you have not yet received an email notifying you - I know that the team are currently ploughing their way through a large volume of emails.

I'd like to direct two questions to Choices Direct if I may.

I fully understand your recent decision to exploit the status of Jersey to maximise your profits. With items under £18 now being processed by your newly formed Jersey company, you do not need to collect VAT on these orders. Your Jersey division can ship these goods to the mainland in the knowledge that customers will also not be charged VAT by Customs. Choices Direct is then able to pocket the money that would have been paid to the Exchequer in VAT, had the sale been subject to UK laws. Choices Direct now comprises two companies: HEC PLC, the UK arm which continues to be subject to UK Law and so collects VAT. HEC PLC will therefore be responsible for orders over £18. Then there is the Jersey company called Choices Direct (Jersey) Ltd which ships under £18 orders via Jersey and so does need to collect or pay VAT.

Question 1:

I pre-ordered a DVD on the 26 June 2004 costing £11.24. This was some months before your Jersey operation was announced. I placed the order on the understanding that:

1. I was entering into an agreement with the UK-based HEC PLC.
2. My order would be subject to English Law and that the VAT element in the price would be paid to the UK Exchequer.
3. The DVD would be despatched direct to me from within the UK and not via an offshore base.

Without Choices Direct informing me or consulting me, this order I placed with HEC PLC was unilaterally transferred to another company - Choices Direct (Jersey) Ltd - and the DVD delivered via Jersey in November. Whilst the price I paid was the same, I experienced a delay in the DVD arriving. What concerns me most is the way you transferred my order to a different company without consulting me. Would it not have been common courtesy to consult customers before simply transferring pre-orders placed with HEC PLC to Choices Direct (Jersey) Ltd?

Question 2:

When I enquired about your Jersey operation in November I was told that DVDs under £18 are now posted from Peterborough to Jersey and, finally, to the customer. Before your Jersey operation started all DVDs were simply sent from Peterborough to the customer. Your telephone staff insisted that sending DVDs via Jersey would in no way lengthen the time a DVD takes to arrive. How is this possible? Any fool can see that sending a DVD from Peterborough direct to the customer will be faster than posting the DVD from Peterborough to Jersey and then back to the mainland. Why weren't your telephone staff just upfront and honest and tell customers that DVDs being sent via Jersey would incur a slight delay? Have you changed your operation since November? How are sub-£18 DVDs now shipped to customers?

Many thanks.

Hi Ed,

Your questions have been addressed by our Director (please see bleow). Should you wish to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact our customer services dept on:

0870 4003838

Just to pick up on your first point that the decision was made to exploit the status of Jersey to maximise profits for HEC.In fact we have used the VAT advantage to offer even more competitive prices to our customers. Anyone using the Choices Direct site cannot fail to see the extensive discounting we are now offering our customers.

Question 1:

I pre-ordered a DVD on the 26 June 2004 costing £11.24. This was some months before your Jersey operation was announced. I placed the order on the understanding that:

1. I was entering into an agreement with the UK-based HEC PLC.

When a customer places an order on the internet, as our terms and conditions have always stated, that constitutes an offer to purchase, but no contract exists between the customer and ourselves until the goods are either dispatched or an email notifying the customer that the goods have been dispatched has been sent. It is therefore the case that the pre order placed on June 26th was an offer to buy and not a contract or an agreement to supply.
The dispatch email you received prior to your goods arriving was the notification of the contract between yourself and Choices Direct (Jersey).
Naturally, if you are unhappy with this arrangement you are free to return the goods and receive a full refund but please be assured it was not our intention to mislead you in any way.

We have organised our new release items to continue to arrive with customers on release date as we appreciate this is an important element of DVD purchasing on the internet. Our back catalogue will take up to 3 days longer to arrive. Again we think the discounted pricing will compensate for this. We have never stated delivery dates only dispatch dates and these remain the same. However we acknowledge your point regarding the customer service information and we will endeavour to correct any misleading information given out.

Ed Parsons

Thank you for your reply, which is very much appreciated.

But the point is that I offered to buy the DVD from HEC PLC. I did not offer to buy the DVD from Choices Direct (Jersey) Ltd. You transferred my "offer to buy" from HEC PLC to Choices Direct (Jersey) Ltd without consulting me or notifying me. You send emails to customers every week highlighting your special offers. You also send (to your credit) order status updates if an order is delayed for any reason. Before the Jersey operation went live, you could very easily just have emailed all your customers to advise them that any outstanding orders under £18 would be transferred to Choices Direct (Jersey) Ltd. You chose not to do this. You simply amended the terms and conditions on your website and left customers with open orders in the dark about this change.

We have organised our new release items to continue to arrive with customers on release date as we appreciate this is an important element of DVD purchasing on the internet. Our back catalogue will take up to 3 days longer to arrive.
Thank you for at least ensuring that pre-orders are sent early to arrive on the day of release and for confirming that other orders will take longer via your Jersey division. The news that pre-orders will arrive on time is very encouraging and I look forward to placing many more pre-orders with you on this basis.

We have never stated delivery dates only dispatch dates and these remain the same.
Your customer services informed me by telephone that DVDs would not take longer to arrive via Jersey, which is why I mentioned this. However, I am pleased to see your customer services have been informed that non pre-order titles under £18 will be subject to delay of up to 3 days as a result of being shipped via Jersey.

I have always found Choices very good till just before Christmas when one of my two ordered DVDs didn't arrive and several emails to enquiries and complaints got no answer (and still haven't) and the website order status which does not work forced me into phoning which took several days. When I finally did get through I find my order has been cancelled but no one could tell me why. Order 000D820AF917
The phones are going to be busy if you never answer e-mails or get your site sorted.
I will no doubt start ordering again from Choices when they get their act together.

Hi Soul,

Due to the additional seasonal business that our website has created and our new price strategy, we have been extremely busy and we would certainly acknowledge that we have not always been able to answer emails and phone calls as quickly as we would have liked. We are currently addressing this issue and are extremely sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

The issue relating to the cancellation of your order is account specific which we will happily discuss further off-line (an email has been sent to your registered Choices Direct email address that includes further details). Again due to the seasonal business we did have a back log of emails which have now been cleared.

We will be re-launching our site early next year and a key change will be to make it easier for customers to manage their orders online including the updating of card details and also a more comprehensive Order History page advising customers of the exact stage of their orders. So your complaint has certainly not fallen on deaf ears and we hope to be able to give a much better site and improved customer services in the very near future.

Hi, Placed my first order with you a couple of days (Order no 000EB391FF0D) and was hoping to get some idea when the items will be turning up. The DVD's are Billy Connelly's Tour of New Zealand and Auf Weidersehen Pet Special (which is out Monday).

As the "order status" is not updated will I get seperate dispatch e-mails or just when the last item sent, or will both items be sent together.

Many Thanks

Hi Delh,

No it doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about. If the order numbers are identical in the duplicate emails then only 1 of each order will have been placed. If you would like our customer service team to double check for you, please dop them an email with your account number at Enquiries@choicesdirect.com.

Hi James,

I'm not sure whether you are referring to Ipoints or Alias or both :)

In terms of Ipoints - did you drop our customer services team an email regarding your Ipoints? If so and you have not yet received a response please let me know and I shall chase this up for you.

Alias - I've just given them a nudge and here is their response:

"As far as I know, this isn't on promotion - it has been before so maybe Amazon has just got some stock left. Or they have an exclusive on it."

They will contact the distributor to see if the title is currently available on promotion. By an exclusive they mean that Amazon may have been offered/asked for an exclusive promotion on this product for a certain period of time.

Hi James,

In all honesty, I would personally advise that you pick it up from Amazon. It is a fantastic price (I can't find any better) and will avoid any disappointment. Should it be available to us on promotion, by the time it would take to agree terms, order stock and generally go round the houses would probably be too late for your brother's birthday.

:( I'm very sorry but maybe next time!

Generally should a title be on promotion, we will have it at a discount price on our website. If not it is almost certainly due to one of the reasons previously mentioned. I have looked at our promotion schedule for the next month or so and this particular title does not feature on it. I would suspect Amazon have stock leftover from the last time it was on..

Whilst I'd recommend anyone interested in 70's British TV comedy to buy The Goodies: At Last A Second Helping (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click^QS^p=18513^QA^a=60823^QA^g=228655^QA^url=http://www.choicesdirect.com/templates/product.asp^QS^ProductGuid=669995), to avoid disappointing customers you may wish to change the episode listing. The Choices Direct website currently states that the following episodes are on the DVD:

The Loch Ness Monster aka Scotland
Sporting Goodies aka The Commonwealth Games
Pollution
The Lost Tribe Of The Orinoco aka The Lost Tribe
The Stolen Musicians aka The Music Master aka The Music Lovers
Culture For The Masses aka Art For Art's Sake
Kitten Kong
Wicked Waltzing aka Come Dancing
Farm Fresh Food aka Health Farm
Women's Lib aka Sexual Revolution
Gender Education aka Sex And Violence
Charity Bounce
The Baddies

The correct list of episodes is:

Movies
Come Dancing
South Africa
Bunfight at the OK Tearooms
The End
Scoutrageous
Punky Business
Radio Goodies

Hi acs,

I had quite a bit of difficulty finding out what was going on with your replacement - it seemed to be stuck in a pending status however this has now been resolved and our Customer Service manager has upgraded the shipping to Parcel Force 24 hour which will go out tomorrow morning. Please let me know if you have not received by Monday.

The box set arrived yesterday. Thanks for your help.

Hi could you look into these 2 orders please? (000EFD77F6F3 & 000F04CC207A) Ive mailed twice without reply over the last 4 days stating they both arrived with discs scratched in them. Said i wanted to return them for a refund as i didnt want to risk getting replacements that were scratched too as none of the discs were loose but still scratched so packaging in a box wouldnt neccessarily help. Can you look into this or wether you got my emails? Thanks.

Hi gouryella,

I am limited as to what I can do (I am not part of the customer service dept.) however I can see their inbox and order statuses. The inbox currently has a backlog to emails sent yesterday evening, so I would have expected that you should have received a reply to your emails. I notice your registered address is a Hotmail one - do have a junk mail filter on at all? - as responses may have gone straight to your junk mail folder.. If you still have no joy, please let me know.

Hi

Just wondering if you had shipped the ER S3 sets yet or is there a delay? All my pre-orders from Choices have come on the day of release or before apart from this one. I'm only asking as I paid using Ipoints, so I'm not sure if they have ordered it from you yet.

Thanks

Hi

I was going to buy the complete buffy 39 DVD boxed set off you when it was withdrawn from your site. After waiting for it to come back in stock I searched on e-bay for it and found that you are selling it on there for over twice the price (£300)!

Are you planning on selling it again on your website as it looks at the moment like you have withdrawn it to sell for more money on e-bay?

Just pre-ordered Old Boy with a free T-shirt (Order No. 000F332ADDD4). Just wondering if you get to choose a size for the t-shirt? If so, can I have a small please? I'm scrawny. If not then it's not a problem :D

Hi giger,

This product was sold on our website to our customers until all stock was exhausted. It was then withdrawn as we could no longer obtain further copies from the distributor due to the Limited status of the item. A few unwanted returns have trickled through after Christmas that we cannot put back on the site due to unprecedented demand for the item and have therefore been offered as they have been received, to anyone wishing to purchase through Ebay.

Hi greebofitz,

A huge box has arrived in the warehouse containing these T-shirts. I'm told that the outside of the box is marked as "Medium" size so I would guess the chances are that they will all be medium size.

Ipoints dont give anyone an order number I'm afraid. I preordered it through them on the 15th. I also ordered Angel S1 & 2 through them on the 21st which I havent arrived, but I cant say that I'm overly worried about these yet.

Hi Kwebbotaurus,

Hi Simon,

All pre-orders are despatched up to 7 days in advance of release date to our distribution centre in Jersey, packed and sent out to our customers via Royal Mail within 48 of receipt. They should therefore arrive on or before release date with the customer however we cannot guarantee it as we have no control over delivery times through Royal Mail.

Will the Order History system on the website ever be updated so that it actually changes when the item is dispatched to the customer; at the moment I have several items that I have received still listed as 'In Progress', would be handy for checking progress of orders if it changed when the item is dispatched rather than a few months after the item has been received.

Also, any news on when "Saw - Uncut version' will be dispatched from your Jersey distribution centre?

Hi Kwebbotaurus,

Yes the order history system is a problem - it was working up until the distribution centre in Jersey was opened which introduced complications within the system and we have had to disable it until these have been resolved. It is likely that it will be fixed as part of a major site revamp coming later in the year.

With regards to Saw, this is due for delviery today in Jersey and all orders will be despatched tomorrow for delivery on Monday (though some lucky customers may get theirs on Saturday ;) )

Hi Delh,

You receive them separately via Jersey. The trigger in the ordering system is the price - if you were to place an order for 50 products under £18, your order would be automatically treated as 50 seperate orders - as the price check at the time of ordering would detect each product is under the £18 limit and therefore they would all be routed separately via Jersey.

All,

I have just looked at Kwebbotaurus's order and notice there has been transaction processing problem in Jersey which has left all orders despatching today in credit hold. Our customer service manager is currently investigating and will get back to me asap. This primarily affects customers awaiting pre-orders due for release on Monday. As soon as have further info, I will post an update.

All,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - I have just received the following notification from our customer service manager:

"There has been an EFT problem between the bank and ourselves. Orders currently held in Jersey cannot get pushed through the debiting routines until overnight so the orders currently in credit hold will not enter the Royal Mail system until Monday."

Once again apologies for this - looking like Tuesday at the earliest for these orders :(

Hi The Saint,

I'm afraid this was a catalogue error from the distributor - the RRP was incorrectly marked. Unfortunately they will not honour their mistake for orders taken to date as prices are subject to change (and they are not obliged to) but the good news for those that did order at the low price is that our generous diretor will be honouring those orders placed through our site ;).

If you are lucky - I noticed that a couple of our competitors still have the incorrect catalogue rrp on their website (and discounted appropiately) so you can still get it at a  price if you're quick (subject to them honouring it of course :D )

I'm suprised that Choices leave shipping pre-orders from Jersey until the Friday before release date.

Also, I ordered 'North by Northwest' which was in-stock and it took 4 (working) days to despatch to me and then a further 2 days (about standard from Jersey) to reach me. Almost a week from ordering, I ordered another DVD from play.com the same day, shipped next day arrived 2 days later!

Hi Coolio,

Stock allowing, we will send all pre-orders out the day before release (over £18) and several days before release if under £18. Very popular titles are heavily over subscribed from the distributor and therefore getting a pre-order in early is advised.

Hi Kwebbotaurus,

We despatch our pre-orders to Jersey the Wednesday before release date where they are turned around very quickly and usually leave the following evening to customers. Unfortuantely last week's shipment encountered a credit authorisation problem which delayed the shipment by a day. I can confirm your order did indeed leave Jersey last Friday.

Back catalogue items will experience a short delay as they dispatch from the uK to Jersey & back. In trade off, the VAT saving we receive is passed on to our customers in the form of substantial savings and promotions.

Very sorry to hear you have yet to receive your order - I'm advised by our Customer Service Dept. to allow 5 working days for delviery from receipt of your despatch email. If you still haven't received your goods by then, please contact them directly on: 0870 4003838 for further advice.

To follow this up further, a recent decision had already been taken to ship pre-order products earlier and with immediate effect, pre-orders will now be picked 7 days prior to release date (stock allowing) rather than 5.

Hi Wolfgang,

They are shipped separately and Old Boy is not actually released until Monday so you should receive the DVD then (currently in transit to Jersey so should ship to you tonight).

Is there some kind of supply problem with Saw?

Ordered two days back and no sign of shipping

Hi LouBarlow,

We currently have no stock issues with Saw uncut (though just a few copies left) or Saw Theatrical. Please dis-regard the order status online, the facility is currently not working. Your order ships from the UK to Jersey and then on to you. You will not receive a despatch email until your order leaves Jersey which may be 3/4 days after ordering as it takes approx 48 hours to be delivered to Jersey before onto yourself. If you could provide your order number, can tell you at what stage your order is at.

Is this a change in system all of a sudden then?

I've always received goods in a faster time than this newly released title has taken to ship, which seems totally different to your service in the past.

I've tried to cancel via email but haven't had a response either...I guess that's out of the question now it's entered the system too!

Hi LouBarlow,

Our Jersey operation has been operating since the end of October 2004 and only affects products below £18. The tax advantage gained by using this method is passed on to our customers in the form of very aggressive product pricing (this topic has been covered on previous pages of this particular thread). We aim to deliver pre-order titles placed up to seven days in advance of release date: on or before release date (subject to Royal Mail) as we ship these out seven days prior to release. Titles already on release will only enter the shipping process from when the are ordered, however we believe our customers will be prepared to accept an additional couple of days longer shipping time in return for such aggressive pricing. Titles over £18 are shipped through the UK as before.

I'm very sorry you have yet to receive a response to your email. I can confirm all email enquires received up until 12:45pm today have been, or are in the processing of being answered. Please could you advise of your order number and I can let you know the status of your order. Unfortunately once your order enters the Jersey shipping process it cannot be cancelled. You may however, return to the freepost address on the back of your invoice for a full refund if required.

Yeah I noticed your posts on the 1st page explaining the situation.

I guess I'll stick to using your good selves for pre-orders only from now on - to be honest I'd have rather paid £1-2 more and received the goods 3 days earlier, a'la your previous system, but still :D

Thanks for the replies.

No problem!

Yes it is problem that affects new release products - people (including myself :) ) are always to keen to have them as quickly as possible but sadly via the Jersey system we can't offer this and the low price point. We do try to remove any advertising (aside from the charts) of key pre-release products at least a week before release date to counteract this issue to a certain degree. As you say if you get your pre-order in early, you may be lucky and get it on the Saturday before release :n0rty:. We do not charge your card until despatch so it can always be cancelled up until the point it leaves the UK.

That's exactly how I feel about the new system, it's fine for pre-orders, but with in-stock already released products, the small saving doesn't always justify the extended delivery time.

Maybe it's worth Choices adding a second price point for delivery direct from the UK for those types of orders?

Hi William2003,

Yes apologies for this error. These products are part of a new Buy On Get One Free promotion (2 for £30) that went live this morning at the incorrect price :( . The incorrect prices were put right immediately but were still being shown at the wrong price in the search results when you searched for them individually (clicking through gave you the correct £15 price). These have also now been corrected.

Earlier this afternoon I placed an order ( Dark Angel: Season 1 ) at which time I received an onscreen error message stating that the transaction had not processed properly and that a fault had been relayed to your Technical Department. A short time later I placed the order again at which time it processed properly. A few minutes later I placed an additional order ( Dark Angel: Season 2 ) which also processed properly.

I subsequently received the following confirmation of order e-mails :-

28/02/2005 000FC0C3AD0A £15.00 in progress

28/02/2005 000FC0C08CDB £15.00 in progress

However, while checking my Order Status a few minutes ago, I see that the following orders are listed in My Account :-

28/02/2005 000FC0C3AD0A £15.00 in progress

28/02/2005 000FC0C08CDB £15.00 in progress

28/02/2005 000FC0AB3B4A £15.00 in progress

It would appear that the first transaction was successful despite the fact that an error message appeared on my screen and no confirmation e-mail was sent and/or received.

Since I only wish to purchase one copy of each season can you please cancel order No. 000FC0AB3B4A.

Hi hnimmo,

The despatch emails are deliberately queued for 24 hours from when orders leave Jersey to their final destination (this is done to comply with our returns policy). As soon as orders for Jersey distribution have been processed, they are immediately packed ready to go to Jersey and the status is changed to awaiting bulk despatch and no longer cancellable. Unfortuantely it is not feasible to pick out individual orders from the container. Transit to Jersey is up to 48 hours. Upon arrival, an immediate "pack and despatch" process takes place and the orders go out to their final destiantion. 24 hours later the customer receives their despatch email (your order will have left Jersey yesterday morning). I hope this makes sense and again apologies for the problem you originally encountered!

The site doesn't support Mozilla. If you make an order the confirm details screen doesn't allow you to confirm details. The wee icon for the confirm details button doesn't do anything.

I've had to use <shudder> IE to make the order :)

Thanks ASH - I shall pass these details on to our developers!

Hi ASH,

Our developers are using the current version of Firefox to test this out for you and are unable to replicate the problem. Please could you let me know if you are using a previous version Mozilla? They tell me it should be backwards compatible but will test it as necessary. They also tell me that Jacvascript must be enabled within the browser for the confirm details button to work.

Re Mozilla - I'm using the latest version (1.01) and javascript is enavled.

I get to the confirm details screen but the blue arrow (javascriptdocument thingy) doesnt activate - pressing the rmb just gives me the print or save picture option.

Not to worry - it must be something on my machine.

Hi guysie,

We expect delivery of these on either the 14th or 21st March. We aim to despatch pre-orders in time for release date. This is a UK despatch pre-order item (due to the value) so will be sent out a couple of days before release date. I would imagine you will be looking at despatch to you Friday 25/03 for delivery Monday 28/03.

Hi Coolio,

I've checked your order and it is currently in credit hold which means we’ve been unable to take payment/validate yaour card details (I'm told that you should have received an email yesterday to your registered email address). Please could you call our Customer Service dept. on 0870 4003838 so that we can re-confirm your correct details and there *may* still be a chance that this will go out to you this afternoon.

Hi matt_james27,

Sorry for the delay - I'm awaiting a reply from our returns team (who are currently very busy!) and will get back to you as soon as I hear back from them. Normally an email is sent to your registered account email address confirming receipt and that a refund will be issued.

I got a delayed mail for part of my order (no 000FE62EEB4A), the mail said check the website for availability but on doing so it says the item is available within 48 hours which it is what it said when I ordered it. So I am a bit confused as to when it will be dispatched :)

Hi Alan,

It looks to me as though we have under estimated demand for the title in question. A very small amount of stock was delivered on 07/03 but this did not cover all orders. We have another delivery tomorrow of this title tomorrow, Monday and again on Tuesday (!) so yours will be in one of those shipments. I would imagine that the site will refresh overnight and show the title being out of stock tomorrow morning and then back in stock again on Saturday (even though the stock received will only cover some of the outstanding sales). Very strange - we seem to have surges of orders for this title every couple of days!

Many thanks my order turned up in the afternoon.
One question though is there was no copy of the receipt / invoice in the box.
All previous orders from Choices have had one !

Will this cause a problem if I have to return any as faulty especially as it will probably take me a month or so to watch all 3 series.

Hi malcy,

All orders should come with a invoice - if your invoice/shipping address are different, the invoice will be sent separately to the invoice address. If not, please drop an email request to Enquiries@choicesdirect.com and a member of our customer service team will be happy to arrange for your invoice to be sent to you.

Just wandering what the situation was with purchases made by reedeeming ipoints. Every pre-order I've made with Choices and paid by card has arrived on or before release date. I've pre-ordered ER S3 and now X Files S7,8 & 9 and none of them turned up on time. Still waiting for the X Files, even though most seem to have received them.

Am I just unlucky, or are purchases paid for with Ipoints pushed to the back of the cue?

Hi magicrat,

Ipoints purchases are handled by Ipoints themselves and should be directed to Ipoints customer service rather than ourselves. They will process your order and place it with us. Once your order has been received, we will process in the usual way i.e. as if you had placed your order directly with us. Their FAQ states:

"Following successful processing of the order you will receive the Reward within two working weeks. If there is a delay please notify us immediately at feedback@ipoints.co.uk."

If your order is a pre-order item, I suspect that the 14 day timeframe will apply from the point of availability/release date though I would run this past Ipoints themselves for claraification.

Hi RDNZL,

Thanks for the quick reply & clearing things up for me - I just assumed that my credit card would be debited as soon as the order was shipped to Jersey
