Does anyone know if the multi-region players from Richer Sounds have macrovision disabled?

It depends on the player. Different players have different mods. Some of the cheaper players from R.S just come with details of a multiregion hack (these usually don't have macrovision disabled).

If you want macrovision disabled in order to back up DVDs to VHS be aware that to record NTSC DVDs (region 1) you will need a player that outputs PAL50.Most only output PAL60 (not compatible with UK VCRs) or NTSC.

If you mention which player you were considering , you might get a more definate answer ;)

It's the Pioneer 636 - am looking for my brother. I know this has been superceded by the 646 but the price at RS is still quite good

why don't you just ask richer sounds? i have always found that they know what they're talking about.

The players don't come with macrovision disabled unless it's a feature of the machine itself - eg the Chinese machine they have for 180 is macro free, but any with mod's aren't.

I also felt that the mods aren't as good as elsewhere (ie the Tosh 210 I was going to get needed an RCE workaround) - but I was getting 120 quid for my knacked 709 so can't grumble too much :) - ended up with a Yamaha S520 which noone else seems to have

Just couldn't get through to them. Tried continuously yesterday and finally go through - found out that the 636 should have the macrovision turned off. It also doesn't need an extra RCE hack. Only think is you have to set the region every time you change region
